Are you feeling the gas pinch?

Posted: Apr 20, 2011

I average only 14 gallons of gas per month.  At $3.70 a gallon, that is over $51 a month.  I walk my child to school.  I combine trips.  It isn't unusual for my car not to move only one day a week, and I still find it hard to accept the cost of adding gas to my car.  Forget about being in a relationship - it's too expensive!  My cost to telecommute to work is less than $40 a month for my internet service although costs for electricity are probably higher than someone working out of the home, but it makes me very grateful I am able to work from home.  My car is over 12 years old and every warning light that came as "standard" comes on every time I crank it, but I just can't justify buying a new or a "new" used car when I only average 5k miles a year.  I will probably be forced to deal with it within the next year.  I know I am not interested in working outside the home at this point because of car and gas expenses.

Is it just me?  Does anyone else begrudge the expense of owning cars?  Sometimes I think I want to live in a large city where public transportation is available, but I think it would be offset with a huge difference in the cost of living.

So how do you feel about you car and the expense of keeping it?  Do you go without car ownership?  Is the expense/aggravation factor comparable with public transportation?  Is your car your lifeline to independence?

;

Not me - because I work at home I only fill the tank - about once every 5-6 months - $20.

I go to the grocery store once every 3 weeks. The last time I got gas was somewhere between Thanksgiving and X-mas

Are you referring to your car, and are you using a second houshold car for running around? How can anyone stay home constantly and use no more than $20.00 worth of gas since Thanksgiving? $20.00 doesn't even give me 1/12 tank of gas anymore.

We definitely feel it. - Kendra

My husband commutes 60 miles one way to work and we live so far out in the country that pretty much everything is 45 minutes to 1 hour away. Right now, because I work from home and the car is cheaper to drive, my husband is driving my car and leaving me with his crew cab long bed pickup that doesn't fit in any parking spaces, but we really can't afford for him to drive the truck to work since diesel is more expensive than gas and the care gets better mileage. I miss my car :(

I soooo feel for you Kendra. My husband doesnt have a diesel but he has a V8 and now his 30 mile commute one way is much better in my little 4 cylinder. I call it the Monster cause I HATE trying to park it. Its a Dodge Ram with 4 doors. I miss my car too...

My car is 16 years old, it was brand new when I purchased it. Age really doesn't mean much if a car is properly maintained. For me, insurance is the most expensive part of car ownership. I have been driving to and from work, a distance of perhaps 10 miles round trip, but plan to start using public transportation next week. I still need my car for errands but do consolidate my trips and would think long and hard before completely getting rid of it, but I have no plans to purchase a new one. Where I live, gas averages $3.90 a gallon. I didn't understand your comment about being in a relationship. I don't consider a tank of gas a month to be a big deal but everyone's situation is different.

In 2008 when gas hit $4.10 a gallon, we bought a - Prius

It really has helped, because we get 48 mpg. My husband has a 45 mile one-way commute each day, and he travels over a toll road, as well. So it adds up. For me, I'm now very glad that I live in a town. I have a bike with a basket on the handlebars, and can do all but big grocery errands on my bike. Sometimes I hum the music from the Wizard of Oz when I pedal... you know, the theme for the Wicked Witch. LOL

Car/Gas - LinK

I use about $25 worth of gas a week (For some reason, don't ask me why, I always get a half a tank and never fill up). My husband works at a car dealership so every 3 years I lease a new car. I had a Jeep which was awful on gas, but now I have a RAV 4 which is a lot better. I would save more on gas, but my husband has an older car that he's trying to make last as long as he can so we drive my car on the weekends. The gas prices here are up to $3.95. My daughter just started driving a few months ago so now that she has a job we're going to have her contribute to gas because most of my mileage goes to driving her back and forth to her boyfriend's house three days a week. I wish I was like the above poster who can go 6 months without getting gas.

I drive an Envoy extended, which takes about $100 to fill up with gas being $3.85 in our area. I work outside the home about 30 miles roundtrip. My husband always has the same commute with his Olds Aurora that takes about $50 to fill up. I just got my hours changed, so we can ride together in the car, which has been a great help.

We live about 7 miles outside of town and we have 3 boys that play baseball. We're at the ball field at least 5 days a week, sometimes 7. We make sure we pack everything up the night before, so we can just pick up the kids after work and head straight to the field. We try not to make that extra trip home in between to save on gas. The kids complain because we're all cramped in the car and they prefer the extra seating in the Envoy, but every time they complain, I tell them that's one less trip to the sub shop or 1 less video game we can afford when we have to drive the Envoy.

We save the Envoy for the longer trips and when we have to pick up friends of the kids. We have 4 vehicles in total, but only use 3 of them. My husband has a small truck that we use for landscaping and hauling. We're trying to sell the minivan and we're looking at trading my husband's car on a new model with better gas mileage. I'd like to get a hybrid, but I don't know if we could afford it. I have to research that one a bit.

I would never give up my vehicles. We will always have at least 2, most likely 3, vehicles running. My oldest will be driving a couple of years.

Feeling Sorry For MyselfDec 07, 2011
So, it's been a really rough 6 months for my family (such as it is). We have lost an uncle, best friend, another friend, father, a dog (16 years old), a cat (15 years old) and a bird (28 years old).  Never mind all the "fun" of being an MT.  After sitting in this grief/pity party for ourselves, my DH and I decided that celebrating Christmas was just too much to bear. After much thought, I decided to check out this website I found and now instead of sitting around feeling out of so ...

Here Is My Feeling...Aug 31, 2012
Look at all the people who have been "mentors" in Ovomits life. A fanatic religious man, a communist who influenced him as a mentor at age 9 on - my feeling is that this man has been raised, schooled and groomed throughout his lifetime by people who wanted him in charge to destroy this country so the U.S. is no longer a force to be reckoned with. He care nothing for the legal citizens in this country (probably not being one himself), ignores the will of the American people to push is own agend ...

Feeling Sad About ThisDec 11, 2014
I know a lot of people, myself included, who at various times in our lives have made the comment they wish Christmas was over.  I am sad to say this year is the first year I have no "Christmas feeling" whatsoever, and I don't want to acknowledge it at all.  I am struggling both financially and emotionally picking up a few gifts for just a handful of people, just because I know they are buying for me.  I have been through the worst 18 months of my life, and it has taken a trem ...

Feeling NostalgicAug 12, 2013
Every once in awhile I go on Ebay and just search for "medical transcription" items.  I've found good buys in the past on various items (electronic spellcheckers, foot pedals, headphones, etc). For some reason, when I ran the search today and was looking through the items, I started feeling all warm and fuzzy and nostalgic for the "good old days."  The days about 20 years ago when I was first learning medical transcription (in-house and on the job), and everything was exciting an ...

Feeling Horribly AnxiousSep 09, 2010
I just need to connect with someone right now.  I am alone, and in about 45 minutes I am going up to my stepfather's to help him get our parrot out of her very big cage into the little cage we use when she has to leave the house.  She fights it every time, hangs onto the bars and screams.   We must take her today to have her nails trimmed.  They are very long and I am afraid she will get caught on the bars when she climbs and plays.  It is long overdue.  M ...

Disappointed, But Feeling Silly About ItNov 16, 2012
Okay, this is going to sound REALLY stupid and childish and I hope after a long week you  get a laugh from this.  I can't tell my dear sweet hubbie because he meant good, but I have to tell someone.  He did the grocery shopping today.  He comes home and I see a container of mint ice cream (I gag thinking of it, but its his favorite), so I'm so excited he bought ice cream.  Been in the mood for a bowl of ice cream.  I keep emptying the bags putting food awa ...

Been looking on line and then called pharmacist just to back up quitting the Metformin cold turkey. Told the pharmacist went on 500, now up to 1500 and gained 6 lbs in 5 weeks. She told me, yes you can gain that much in a week. I feel like a dunce now- first the NP telling me I could not lose 50 lbs overnight and now the pharmacist telling me I could gain that much in a week. I am going to have to go back to school because the statements being made today are just so much over my head (NOT). I ha ...

For Cat Lovers, Feeling GuiltyJun 04, 2013
I just found out my 2nd cat in 10 years likely has a cryptococcal fungal infection.  The 1st one I did the whole treatment, surgery, biopsy, blood titers, fluconazole (150 bucks a month for a year), cost me over $2000.  She got better, but about 6 months later, it came back and I could not afford to treat her anymore.  I put all that cost on my credit cards. Well fast forward, I now have another cat with the same thing.  Saw the vet (different one) and he wants to do a biops ...

Feeling Guilty About Sick HusbandFeb 28, 2011
My husband had terrible lower back pain and went to the doctor last week and was told he most likely had sciatica. He was given a prescription for hydrocodone/APAP and told he could also use ibuprofen and to try resting and using ice for relief. It has been over a week and my husband is still in pain. I know sciatica can be terrible, but the thing iis that my husband is making no effort to try to get better, at least that's how it seems to me. When I ask him if the hydrocodone is ...

The fact that Kloppenburg was UNKNOWN two months ago and has all but beaten a 14 year incumbent, goes to show how far out of touch the Republican T-Party is with the working people of Wisconsin.  Only five other Supreme Count incumbents have been ousted by a challenger in the history of Wisconsin.
