Dems Repubs and Independents

Posted: Jan 18, 2016

Typically I decide to vote person by person, not party line.

Over the 50 some odd years I've watched and the high school and colllege courses I've taken, here's the gist of dems repubs and independents.

Democrats: Share some so everybody gets something. Keep the status quo because that is what got us where we are and we don't want the idle able bodied to take it away. Work hard and you'll rise to the level your own abilities let you.

Republicans: I worked hard for this, and you can too. Why should I share it with you when you have the same opportunity I had? It's wrong to support the ide able bodied. Don't give them anything. Now that I'm the status quo, i can take advantage of every loophole to get even richer. I got here, so you can too. Do ya think 15% is equitable tax on a few million dollars earned off the sale of your stocks? Yep, that's the capital gains tax. You can google it. The repubs don't want to increase it because nobody would invest in their companies on the stock market. Long term average yield is 8%.

Independents: Depends on what's happening now, maybe we need some adjusting.

No one party has screwed up this country. We all participated. The one thing I have against republicans is how dead set they are against any "entitlements" until they are eligible for them. Like my friend who truly is disabled, but would not apply (because he doesn't believe in it) but lives in his parents home and mooches off them. When he got Medicaid, he was right there getting everything he could from it. This is a diehard republican?

But then, there are the democrats who think Medicaid and food stamps are there so they don't have to work. Huh?

Point of fact, all parties have lost their moral compass.

I personally have never known someone who - was able to get any kind of welfare

I have heard there are communities where it is generational, that there are people out there taking advantage, but I personally only ever knew one woman who tried to get help and she was turned down cold, made to feel like a lowlife for even asking.

I base my views on my personal experience, not something I hear on Fox News or certainly not the right wing talking points about people taking advantage of the system.

I'm not saying it's not happening, just wondering if anyone has personal experience or knowledge of these people. The nearest I have come is someone I know whose husband is on disability but he seems to get a lot of cash jobs, that's about it.

I really do NOT think there are there are "the democrats who think Medicaid and food stamps are there so they don't have to work." Really? I think anyone who thinks that and is able to pull it off is not a Democrat or a Republican, just an opportunist.

But again maybe some of you know better through personal experience. I know I don't.

Same here - SM

I had a friend who applied and was treated like she was the scum of the earth. Her husband is a vet who is unable to keep a job due to PTSD. They have 4 kids and she is stretched so thin, I think she gets 2-3 hours of sleep a night trying to keep it all together.

On the other hand, daughter's friend brags about having 20 plus pairs of expensive jeans. I happen to know that this family receives free school lunches and are staunch Republicans.

Then you just don't know the right people. This is what comes from viewing - the world through your own tiny lens.

[ In Reply To ..]
You seem almost proud of limiting your knowledge to what you have experienced personally. Very odd, to say the least.

Where do you think the $3 trillion spent in the War on Poverty since Johnson has gone?

I'm sure you're quite well aware that there are millions of people receiving some form of public assistance - 52.2 million, in fact, by the government's own numbers, as recently as 05/2015.

You must lead a very insular life indeed if you've never met even one of them. Or don't you even go to the grocery store, where on any given day you can see people using their EBT cards??!! You might not "personally know" them, but if you've even observed someone using their card you personally know OF them.

So do you know of any personally? - By Fox News accounts, we should all know some

[ In Reply To ..]
Since they claim it is so widespread.

I do not think it is odd to want to know of personal experience of these so-called welfare queens, because I do NOT believe the media has a liberal bias, I happen to believe it has a conservative/corporate bias. The media is owned by corporations after all, and it is in their interest for us to blame each other down here on the bottom, not those at the top.

I myself am very close to attempting to receive public assistance, but it is NOT because I have my hand out and am trying to abuse the system, it is because my MTSO cut my pay so drastically and it is very hard to make ends meet. I also live in a rural area where there are not a lot of other jobs available and they pay no more.

How can anyone believe these stories of systemic abuse without having personal knowledge? The reason I disbelieve them is that the person I knew who tried had such a hard time and was made to feel so bad. With that kind of beatup, who would try again?

I think it would be odd if you believe there are people everywhere abusing the welfare system if you don't know any yourself. The bigger abusers are those like Wal-Mart (and our own MTSOs) who don't pay enough for families to live and get their puny salaries supplemented by food stamps and Medicaid, they are the true welfare queens.
Yes, I do. I met them when I was a police officer. - It's not at all uncommon.

If all you will ever know is what you've experienced personally, you will forever remain ignorant of the larger world.

Incidentally, I've never seen any factual refutation of the problem of generational welfare dependency. It's a very real systemic social phenomenon.
It is true that poverty does breed poverty. We need to do... - sm

a better job of raising people up and giving them hope for a better life. Investment in poverty stricken children is an investment that we need to commit to.
Absolutely programs like WIC, Headstart, MA - I have seen
[ In Reply To ..]
Through my little personal lens of my previous employment, I saw pregnant women and children receive proper nutrition and parenting information through the WIC program. I saw the children get early health care through MA. Many of these kids went on to preschool ed through Headstart. Many of these women in WIC were single moms and teenage moms who definitely needed the extra support to ensure their children would grow up healthy and strong.

An extended family member is a former Headstart student. She has blossomed into her career now as an Occupational Therapist. I do credit the Headstart program--the rest of the family has not done nearly so well.

I personally received SSDI while in college that helped me immensely in covering my costs of living when I had no family support. I believe Paul Ryan was also a recipient of this government "handout."

I trust my "lens" more than fun house crazy mirrors - thank you

I actually went to your link and learned the following information. I actually believe these people SHOULD BE receiving assistance, not being put out into the streets. This tells me we need to do more for women, children, under-educated, and retraining programs for the unemployed.

Who Participated in 2012?

Children under age 18: Those under 18 were more likely to receive means-tested benefits than all other age groups.

Female-householder families: At 50 percent, people in female-householder families had the highest rates of participation in major means-tested programs.

Non-high school graduates: 37.3 percent of people who did not graduate from high school received means-tested benefits.

The unemployed: In an average month, 33.5 percent of the unemployed received means-tested benefits in an average month of 2012.

Still Think The Repubs Are Not Just Using ObstructionDec 29, 2009
It was all part of the plan.  The attempts at bipartisan health care reform very deliberately obstructed by the republicans.  They planned well ahead of time to not work with the president with the specific intention of taking down the president and the next election-and this was more important to them than actually working on behalf of the people to bring about good health care reform~and they still are at it!  To h**l with the people, we need to do whatever we can, no matter how ...
