I have a fat cat, now needing to gain control

I have 4 cats, all have the same food but one cat has really gotten overweight and now I am going to have to do something about this. Do not need to hear what a bad mother I am, just needing to know if others have been here before and what did you do. I have fed both wet and dry food and usually have it sitting out with sporadic treats for the cats during the day. I have been reading on line how you need to separate the fat cat from the others for feeding. He has become a couch potato as well. Any useful information from others would be appreciated. ;

[ In Reply To ..]I have 2 cats, and one was getting to be a real porker. She likes dry food, and the other prefers wet although they both will eat a little of the other. I switched to Science Diet weight control, and I can see she's losing weight. Neither gets any treats but it's because they throw them up. While her favorite "exercise" is to lie on her side spinning the trackball, I also use a cat dancer and DaBird so she'll run around and exercise. Good luck!

[ In Reply To ..]and she doesn't eat any different than the others, I feed treat twice a day, 1 small can divided into 6 separate bowls, and keep dry food out all the time. She has no health problems, she just is a porker. I got the others to lose a little when I opened up the upstairs for them to run around in but she doesn't exercise as much as the others. I'm going to try to schedule a few minutes of exercise with just her to make sure she has to run around. Good luck.

[ In Reply To ..]Our fat Maine Coon was diagnosed with diabetes in June and we are giving her 2 insulin shots daily. She eats the same as our other cats, so we are trying to get her "moving" more. I changed food to Purina One Indoor & this seems to be helping. She has lost some weight & the other cats like it as well. Hope this helps! Good luck and God bless.

[ In Reply To ..]My cats (7 of them) free feed and I have one who is just a chunk. They get almost no treats, so part of it is just metabolism. I do try to give him some cardio, though. Things like ill start playing with him while he's on the desk, then toss him off and make him jump back up again. Three or four times of that and he's panting hard. He loves chasing a string in the back yard with everyone else. A laser toy is the best invention ever. My Fattie doesn't like it that much, but the other cats go nuts for it.
I wouldn't give any treats at all for a while and hip just see if you can really get him moving. Good luck.

[ In Reply To ..]his treats to a weight control type of cat food. Much cheaper than 'real' cat treats too and he loves it. He gets about 10 little kibbles a few times a day and thinks he's getting a treat!
If you cat is on dry food switch to wet - sm - XXX
[ In Reply To ..]I too have a fat cat. Vet told me recently to switch her from dry to wet food. If a regular size can then just one can a day (half in a.m., half p.m.). I feed her Fancy Feast to I can give her two of those a day. I use the seafood loaf type and "Elegant Medley" with garden greens. Vet said the wet is better for them and won't cause them to gain weight like the dry food, and she should lose weight now. I think she has lost some but not sure, been 3 months I have had her on this diet. I weighed her a month ago and she was 17.5 pounds, needs to be more like 8-10 probably so have a long way to go. She is not one for playing and spends 90% of her time sleeping, and barely moves from the bed in the MBR as one of the dogs will chase her otherwise. She'll be 11 in March. She is much more interested in people food now, constantly bugs me when I happen to eat on the bed, so take that as sign she is a bit hungry and hopefully the next time I take her to the vet she will be 3-5 pounds lighter.

[ In Reply To ..]My cat is about 8 now and he does like the dry food so as soon as I get back from a trip around Christmas will absolutely not only change him to wet only but also can monitor his food intake then. Now as it is my husband will have to leave all the cats food out to cover for several days at a time until my return. Husband drives out of town for more than 1 day at a time so left up to me to cut down on fat cat's intake. Yeh, let me be the bad parent here. I read somewhere to separate the cats, feeding the fat one isolated from the others and then only leaving the food out for so many minutes. Bad mother, I have left the food out on a constant basis, wet and dry and now having to make hopefully things a little better for my BIG guy.

I've tried a lot of different dry foods, cheap to expensive and they won't touch it, I end up having to take it back to the store or feeding it to my strays. [ In Reply To ..]Went to Petsmart today, walking in noticed a really young guy and he asked could he help me. I told him really needed a person that was knowledgeable about the issue about cats being overweight and he said he could help. That was not the case. What I have read and heard here is the wet cat food is the way to go. He said dry, then after going to the front for conference with vet came back with the wet idea also. I have 4 cats like I said, one just really overweight at 25 lb. I then went further asking if this cat weighs 25 and I want him to lose X amount of weight how much to feed. If I believed his answer I would further gorge my cat with 5 small cans a day. That seemed like a lot really. All 4 cats combined mostly have the round bigger size cans 1 and sometimes 1/2 a day, all cats combined would never eat 5 small cans a day. Ok, so now, I think have determined to get high protein wet food but does anyone have an idea on how much to feed this really BIG boy? I got left out in the math department growing up. Thanks everyone. I love my cats and really want to get him on the right track.

So a cat’s meal should proportionally be about 1/25 of a human meal. That comes out to between 0.6 and 1.0 ounce of food per meal for a seven-pound cat… about the same weight as a mouse. Cat owners must stop thinking in terms of "cups of food" and start thinking in terms of ounces of food.

I had a total thyroidectomy 2 weeks ago. Started levothyroxine 112 mcg the day after. I've gained over 20 pounds already!
