Gun Control Hearings today

Posted: Jan 30, 2013

Mr. LaPierre will say, “When it comes to the issue of background checks, let’s be honest: Background checks will never be ‘universal’ because criminals will never submit to them.”

Mr. LaPierre said, “When it comes to the issue of background checks, let’s be honest: Background checks will never be ‘universal’ because criminals will never submit to them.”

He's absolutely right. They will still sell guns behind the gov't's back.

If you all didn't see the hearings, you have to watch. It was on C-Span. It's very long but very informative. Sen. Cruz stated if you take a semi-automatic deer rifle and put a plastic grip on it, that will make that gun an assault weapon according to the advocates for gun control. He also showed a graph where only 1.9% of gun crimes were committed by those who obtained their gun at a gun show. Evidently an optic site (but I'm not sure on the definition-is that a scope mounted on deer rifles?)  will be illegal, too.

There were a few very IGNORANT Senators on that committee, who campaigned for control and didn't ask many  questions, if any at all. IOW, they weren't interested in seeing or hearing any side other than their own agenda.

So my impression of that hearing is that it's not a matter of fairness...it's a matter of taking the guns away sooner, rather than later, of law-abiding citizens, using Sandy Hook, Gabby Giffords, and the AZ movie shootings no matter what the true facts are.

Dislike all you want. That's my honest opinion. Don't bother calling this post ridiculous, or calling me names. I will not respond. I've tried discussing but you don't want to hear, so I'll gladly close my eyes to any of your remarks (and you know who I'm talking to).

Since when do we not create laws b/c - not everyone will follow them?

Background checks are just common sense and are also supported by the majority of members in the NRA, but those members are NOT where LaPierre's loyalties lie.

Agree with everything you said - except the last paragraph.

In response to your statement:

"Mr. LaPierre said, “When it comes to the issue of background checks, let’s be honest: Background checks will never be ‘universal’ because criminals will never submit to them.”

He's absolutely right. They will still sell guns behind the gov't's back."

Let's say I have a gun. I am a law-abiding citizen who purchased the gun legally, including a background check. I sell it to someone because I need the cash. The guy's a little shady, but I need the money, and he says he just wants it to protect his family. So I sell it to him legally because no background check required, no national data base to keep track of the gun. He then kills people with it. The killing may not have happened if a background check was done and revealed he just got out of prison.

Nothing is perfect, but I don't understand what the big deal is to go the extra mile to save even one life.

LaPierre is not against background checks. - Truthhurts

[ In Reply To ..]
The second sentence is the point he's trying to make and is the absolute truth. Criminals will never submit to a background check. They will buy weapons from the black market and/or another criminal.

I didn't hear or see where he is against background checks. I might have missed that part 'cause I couldn't sit and watch the whole durn thing...it was hours long.

Truthfully, a responsible gun owner would not sell a gun to someone who is "a little shady." They usually sell to someone they know, not a stranger.

During the hearing, it was brought up that the government does not have the manpower to track and record all gun sales. In fact, they don't even have all the background check records! I forget where that info is listed but it's on one of the government sites. So what good would a national database be...or will they bloat the government with more employees?

His comment makes it seem that he is - against background checks.

[ In Reply To ..]
b/c he doesn't think they will work.

“When it comes to the issue of background checks, let’s be honest: Background checks will never be ‘universal’ because criminals will never submit to them.”

So, did he follow that up with something like "we should still do them," or something?

Yeah, he did his best to not answer the question - re background cks

"WASHINGTON -- Wayne LaPierre, chief executive of the National Rifle Association, said Wednesday that he is opposed to closing the so-called gun-show loophole, which allows private sellers to sell firearms without background checks."

The rest of the article is in link below.

Regarding "responsible," I'm not sure we should use the term so loosely and generically regarding judging or trusting whether someone is responsible or not. The person could be responsible, but then after selling the gun to someone they may not know anything about, become not responsible at all.

If background check for everyone was required, sellers would be held to the standard of being "responsible" by law.

I think the government needs to be the responsible entity at this point.

National data base seems feasible. We do it with cars (I guess that's State Gov), but I really think tracking guns is the responsible thing to do.

criminals will never submit... - tvc15

[ In Reply To ..]
The fact that criminals will never submit to a background check is interesting, but it doesn't take into account the reality that most people are not criminals.
So those people have nothing to hide - grits

and would not/should not shrink from a background check. If I were to get a gun, I'd go into it fully expecting to be checked out. DH has had to submit to background checks when applying for jobs; why should it be easier to get a deadly weapon than to land a job?
totally agree... - tvc15
[ In Reply To ..]
I should have been clearer. What I was trying to say is that LaPierre's argument doesn't make sense to me. He seems to be saying that there is no reason to do background checks on noncriminals.

People can't commit a gun crime until sometime after getting the gun. The thousands of people who buy guns should have background checks.

P.S. What the NRA truly want is to ENFORCE the laws already in place - Truthhurts

I found info on the NCIS (National Instant Criminal Section). It's the 2011 report. The 2012 report isn't done yet.

Where did you get that stat? - MTMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I highly doubt that 80% of Americans want gun control. What people want are background checks that are enforced. If you take guns away from responsible, law-abiding citizens, then the only people who will have guns are the criminals. Does that make you feel safer?

This is why the nutjobs always target places where guns aren't allowed... like schools... because they know there won't be anyone there to shoot back.

Everyone is looking at this problem from the wrong end. It's not the gun's fault. It's the person behind the gun. Look at all of the shootings in recent years. Most, if not all, of those people had serious mental issues. What we need to do is concentrate on the pathetic mental health system in this country. Sane, responsible people don't go around shooting up schools and movie theaters.

To me, saying we should make guns illegal is the same as saying that maybe cars should be illegal because so many people die in car crashes.

MTMT, that's averaged DOWN from NRA members alone - who want background checks for everyone. :) nm

As for your fictitious percentage, maybe you should get some fact before throwing imaginary numbers in the air.

The vast majority of Americans do not want gun control. You can't just make up a number without any facts.

Doing a simple search in Google the results are:

Poll: Fewer Americans support stricter gun control laws - CNN (CNN says only 39%)

Another article - 26% favor handgun ban.

CBS says American polls remain split: 46% want stricter laws.

Examiner: "Just 39% want stricter control".

Then I found another page with some interesting comments:

Gun control only takes the guns away from the law abiding citizens. Criminals are NOT going to say" oooh, its ILLEGAL to have a gun so I had better not use one when I rob and rape your family".

You want strict gun control laws? Go to Mexico and see how well Mexican citizens are defending themselves.

Only democrats and liberals support gun control.

Saturday there will be a march in Washington, DC... a march for common-sense gun legislation: to reinstate the assault-weapons ban, to forbid high-capacity magazines, to enforce a 28-day waiting period for gun purchases, to require background checks and gun-safety training, to outlaw bullets that shatter in the body.  No one needs 100 rounds of ammunition to kill a deer. They're threatening to sue the Tucson Police Department because the police department wants to destroy guns turned in via their buyback program. The PD are the people who actually put themselves on the line and deal with situations arising from firearms, and if they want to destroy them, ...
