How many people died? - gunshurtmore
[ In Reply To ..]
How many of those people died? If it would have been a semiautomatic weapon used, instead of a knife, they would not have been taking them off in helicopters for medical treatment. They would have all been in body bags.
None yet. They're not sure how many are critical - Truthhurts

FOUR were known to be critical and were life-flighted but things are still pretty sketchy right now so the critical ones could still die.
Just because they weren't killed on site doesn't mean they won't try to limit whatever knife or instrument it was. They're getting conflicting reports. One student stated he wished they were allowed to carry on campus because this many people wouldn't have been hurt.
So, you see, as so many people have been saying, guns do not kill, people kill people. This is a good example of it, plus the graph that shows assaults and stabbing deaths will have to be updated to add these students.
BTW, Lanza's mother was afraid she had some sort of "genetic brain disorder" and she was afraid her son had it too. They are releasing emails she sent to other people about it. Watch for them.

In NY, anyone who has gone, or is going, to a psychiatrist or psychologist and own guns will have those guns confiscated. Supposedly, the doctors and/or mental health organizations will have to turn over the medical records of their patients.

lax gun laws would have prevented this. If guns solve all problems, you would think the country with the most guns in the world wouldn't have crime anymore.
I still prefer to fight someone who has a knife than someone who has an AK. When I was a kid another kid tried to stab me with a box-cutter, but I could run faster than him so his weapon was ineffective.
There will always be shootings and stabbings and bombings. That doesn't mean that we have to have such an absurdly high gun murder rate. Countries with better laws have less gun violence and the vast majority don't become dictatorships.
Not that I care much about an assault rifle ban. I'm far more concerned with upgrading our mental health system in this country to help people before they snap. Improving our economy and social justice to prevent more parentless homes and homeless families. I believe that by improving our society, we can effectively end AR ownership in this country. All I see are AR owners talking about how the government plans to kill them or enslave them (of course they're too lazy to get a gun they would have to reload so they'd make lousy Gulag workers). Clearly these are people who society has failed.
If we can end poverty and hunger, if we can give every person from birth to death everything they need to join the workforce, stay there and come back when they fall (as just about everyone does at some point), I think we can erase that endemic fear. That isn't to say people's financial choices shouldn't have consequences, just that things like a catastrophic illness or your job being replaced by technology doesn't end the remainder of your working life. A person without the means to live is a radical element in the making. Through better education, academic, occupational or self-education, we can conquer the darkness that keeps so many up at night, worrying that all those things they don't understand are coming for them. Anger is fear turned outward and fear can only survive in the void of knowledge and community.
If we can rehabilitate rather than incarcerate a criminal, we've converted them back to a person. If we can save a person from a life of poverty and disenfranchisement, that person will never be tempted to solve all their problems with a gun. Every child we save from abuse or neglect is one less mentally ill adult. Banning assault rifles would be a Band-Aid on a festering wound in this country.
Sadly, like gun control no one will go for it because solving this situation will need a mixture of Republican and Democrat ideas and more out of the box ideas and we'll never see that happen. America loves the status quo. Rich people are too greedy, poor people still think they'll get rich and our politicians spend all their time trying to get us all to fight each other so we don't notice that somewhere along the line we became a plutocracy.
Go look up the gun murder rate compared to other weapons - Truthhurts

You would be surprised. I am totally against what this government is trying to do to LAW-ABIDING citizens because (and forgive me for capitalizing every word but some people can't understand the meaning if I don't) ONLY CRIMINALS WILL HAVE GUNS.
THEY WILL NOT TURN OVER THEIR GUNS.
THEY WILL NOT REGISTER THEIR GUNS.
THEY WILL STILL BUY GUNS ILLEGALLY.
And, they will STILL BE THE REASON FOR THE MAJORITY OF MURDERS in this country. Chicago and D.C. are good examples. Philadelphia and Newark NJ might be running a close second this year.
Problem nowadays is largely discipline - brought up right

I grew up in a family of hunters and my dad kept rifles, shotguns and pistols in the closet. From an early age I knew I would get a belt-whipping if I touched them. From an early age I knew gun safety, and knew what havoc a bullet could wreak. It's called parenting and discipline.
What a coincidence - NK

I read an article earlier today about a deputy sheriff in Tennessee having a cookout Saturday, took people into his bedroom to show off his arsenal, and a 4-year-old picked up a loaded gun from the bed and shot and killed the deputy's wife. The deputy did say, however, that he doesn't want people to think he makes a habit of leaving loaded guns lying around. Maybe a 4-year-old is too young to threaten with a belt-whipping if he touches a gun.
The problem is not enough - Fanatical Husseincommie

discipline for adults it seems. I personally don't feel it's ever appropriate to hit a child with a belt. No one ever threatened me with one and yet I knew never to touch a gun. Of course, no one left guns out where I could get them in the first place. Or put them in places I could figure how to get them. Respect is always a better motivator than fear. I respected my mom and so I behaved.
The key factor is that you should never trust a child. They're kids after all.

called the ATF that policed illegal guns before it was gutted by the NRA's constant lobbying for their own agenda. The NRA has made it clear repeatedly in their statements and actions that they are pro-gun. Not pro-gun in certain circumstances. They don't care who has them or how they got them or what they'll use them for, they just want more guns. Like Big Tobacco, every man, woman, child, animal, plant or mineral with a gun strapped to it is business. They, along with other groups, have dismantled any legal barrier between criminals and weapons.
As for criminals getting guns, only about a tenth of all illegal guns are stolen. The majority of illegal guns were straw purchases where an individual who can get guns buys a hundred or two hundred and gives them out to all the felons in their organization/neighborhood/household/terrorist cell. Because you can purchase extreme numbers of guns and ammo without anyone asking "Wait, why do you need that many guns?" we have an enforcement system that is fundamentally broken. Imagine if I could purchase a tank with artillery shells with no questions. No one from the government came out to see who I was or whether I really need a tank to hunt "varmints."
In other words, if we don't start drawing limits, enforcing laws and monitoring suspicious purchases, criminals will continue to grow their arsenal. Since owning a gun actually puts you in higher danger of being shot than not owning one and vigilantes have proven time and again to be a double edged sword, law enforcement is usually the way to go.
As for looking up the murder rate by weapon, I have studied it and am not surprised. In fact, I'll be the first to point out that the number of deaths by ARs is an exceptionally thin slice of that pie. One could also argue, however, that atom bombs have killed relatively few people in the course of history, so why shouldn't I be able to purchase one down at the local Bombs R Us. The problem is that the vast majority of stabbings, poisonings, etc. were done by one person against another. Crimes of passion or vengeance, paid assassinations, a simpler method of divorce and what not. The aspect of the AR deaths is that they were done by surprisingly few people. Any death is a tragedy, but most murders are personal matters. Hillbilly wife stabs her redneck husband over the last beer, two friends beat each other to death with an XBox because a game of Madden Football went awry. ARs and other especially deadly weapons often produce massacres. In the same way that bombs are frowned upon because a single person could blow up a whole building. Yes, we still have bombs, but we struggle every day to stop people from getting them and tons of people are caught before they carry out their plans.
There is a website where you order a gun that folds into a suitcase. Who would buy this? What purpose would someone have for a gun that is specifically designed to detach into smaller pieces, be hidden in a suitcase and then advertised as taking less than 2 minutes to reassemble.
If a law doesn't work, we need to evaluate the enforcement methods. Since our present enforcement method is: Watch for a murder -> arrest the guy that did it, we can't really blame the laws themselves.
Some of the gun legislation considered goes too far in my mind, some doesn't go far enough, but most is non-existent or dead on arrival, so we'll have to try what we've been trying for two decades now: Nothing. It's gotta work some day.
I apologize if this comes out as one big paragraph, I don't know why it's doing that.
Sorry, didn't see this. Posted above that they were - speculating it could be a pencil.
