From the Communist Party USA site:

"There is fightback fire beginning to rage and we have to be in the middle of it. We have to put a premium on unity and broad coalition building. We have to mobilize all of our members, friends and potential allies to join in with others in this fight. We have to see the important role that organized labor is and can play in this fight. Never in our lifetime have we seen labor so coalition oriented reaching out to civil rights, youth, women, immigrant, LGBT and even business forces to build this movement. People are inspired by Egypt. The State House in Madison, Wisconsin is beginning to look like Cairo."

No, it's not a good source - It's only an opinion of one person

[ In Reply To ..]
One person's opinion (no matter how much you agree with it) doesn't make it a credible source. The angry mobs are gathering and screaming because they are not getting their way (and how soon before they start to become violent). Well you know what, tough! They want everything free and all they are being asked to pay is 5% for their benefits and they are throwing a childish tantrum about that. They are greedy and self centered and they don't care about anybody but themselves. They are telling the rest of the people in the state "** you we don't care that you all have to pay for your benefits we want it for free". So you know what...the governor should just say go home, or protest, or do whatever you want to but we are passing the bill because it's the best thing for the sate. There are over 5.6 million people in that state and they are all paying way more than 5% for their health care and benefits. And on top of that the state is broke. They owe another state money. They cannot continue to give certain people that belong to unions a free ride anymore. If the previous governor had not screwed up the budget so bad maybe things would be different. I listened to the governor today and he is doing the best thing for the state. And knowing that Paul Ryan is supporting him is enough to know he's doing the right thing.

Perhaps you should get a clue what the issues really are before spouting off about them. The teachers already pay for benefits = they are being asked to pay more. But that isn't their issue here. They have conceded to these things. The protests are over their collective bargaining rights. And Wisconsin is on one very slippery slope. A governor simply doesn't have the right to trample over that right, and his unwillingness to negotiate on the issue tells me he is the greedy and self-centered one. He wants it all his way and will not listen to anyone or anything else. He is behaving like a spoiled child. This is not what is best for Wisconsin. It will definitely impact the quality of education here. If these collective bargaining rights are lost, some of the best teachers, some of the most experienced teachers, will be lost, and there will be no incentive for teachers to attain advanced degrees. programs will be cut, and in the end it is the education of the children that will suffer. The teachers are protesting for the sake of their students. Walker's refusal to listen to anyone and his refusal to negotiate on any of these issues is not a healthy stance for the state of Wisconsin. Protestors are being brought in from other states to add the fray. that is because WI is a sort of "test" state for this issue. Several other states have similar bills lying in wait to follow suit. If Wisconsin manages to busts these unions, it pretty much spells disaster nationwide. Although I am not a big union fan, I don't believe the government has the right to bust the unions; it will be ALL union workers who will suffer, not just the state employees. And I do believe the workers have to have rights and powers. If the unions are going to go, it should be the employees who "bust" them for not doing their jobs appropriately. Then they should reorganize with effective unions with leaders who actually care about the members they should represent but often don't since they are too busy lining the pockets of the union officials. It should be the people, not the govt, who has the power over the unions.
teachers are protesting for teachers - not kids
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm sick and tired of that argument. It seems like the NEA has used that argument ever since the beginning of time. When I was in the 7th grade (a LONG time ago), it was the first time I experienced a teacher strike - and they were doing for the kids. My parents ended up with higher taxes and the teachers ended up with much better health benefits and an added "mid-winter" break in February with 5 days off.

All we do is throw more and more money at the schools - are we producing better educated kids? No.

Really though, BOTH sides are behaving like children. One side runs away and is in hiding in "undisclosed locations" (that's real mature) and the other is not willing to negotiate.
teachers pay less for benefits than anyone - WI MI
[ In Reply To ..]
Seriously, you need to get a clue too. Teachers in WI pay less than $1 a month for health insurance. FOR THEIR FAMILY. They also contribute very minimal amount to their pension. The taxpayers pick up the rest. The teachers also work 9 months of the year, no nights, no weekends, no holidays, no summers and certainly less than 40 hours per week. In our school district alone the average pay is $65K with some teachers up close to 100K. None of these teachers work even close to 40 hours per week. The reason they are mad is because the health insurance premiums went up and they were asked to help pay for it. They went ballistic because they feel they are entited to free health insurance and a wonderful pension. Finally the state is broke and there are no more rich taxpayers to take money from BECAUSE THE TEACHERS MAKE MORE THAN MOST OF THE WORKING PEOPLE!!
get a clue? - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I would like to know where you get your "facts." I have several friends who teach and they definitely pay more than $1 a month for their insurance. Considerably more. But where you are so far off the mark is your comments about them working no nights, no weekends, and less than 40 hours a week. They work almost every night preparing their lesson plans, grading papers, doing projects, etc., etc., and for that they get no pay or credit. they spend many nights at school at special functions, returning phone calls to complaining parents, attending or coaching the school sports and arts events because the parents aren't there for their children. They spend their weekends doing the same. Their summers are used preparing for the upcoming school year as is much of their other time off. Teachers work very hard for their money and in return they get no respect and no appreciation. We hand their our kids 8 hours a day. Most parents spend far less time with their own children than teachers do. We expect them to not only teach but instill the values that many parents don't teach at home. In many WI school districts the kids are downright frightening. We have guns and knives and drugs in our school and kids threaten teachers on a routine basis - and this is in some very good districts. Parents constantly make excuses for their kids not doing the work and constantly blame teachers for their kids' failures. teachers are disrespected and verbally abused on a daily basis. And you think they are well off? Obviously you need to get a clue. And as has been said several times on this board, they have conceded to the increased payments. their issue is with the loss of their collective bargaining rights. If you have enough skill to be an MT, perhaps you should thank the teachers who taught you to read and to write, the ones who taught you how to spell, the ones who taught you how to research, the ones who instilled grammar skills, etc., etc., and stop with your vicious attack on these very valuable and under-appreciated professionals.
where to even start? - WI MT
[ In Reply To ..]
I got my facts from our referendum that we just voted down in our school district. The teachers were complaining because health insurance went up and then DEMANDED a raise. A pay freeze was not an option nor was anything less than 4% raise per year for the next few years. Basically an ultimatum. The voters made the school district list salaries and benefits of all the teachers. Most of the teachers are PT and make over 60K PLUS about 20K in benefits. Even if a teacher is FT they only teach half a day. The PE teacher is so overweight she teaches PE from a chair. The referendum got voted down handily and many parents are actually pulling kids out and home schooling for the very reason you said. We don't want the teachers instilling their liberal values and morals and ethics on our children. Teachers don't want to include the parents in any discipline decisions and so many times suspension is determined without the parent's input. By the way, I went to a private school and I do appreciate the teachers I had because they didn't feel they were entitled and actually worked for the money they earned. Asking teachers to pay 5.6% of their pension and 12% of their health insurance is not any more than the rest of us in the private sector pay. If they don't like it they can quit. I don't mind home schooling my kids or finding a private school.
where to start> - sm

okay, now I get it. you are just better than everyone else. private schools, home school 'cuz your kids are too good for everyone. These are the very people who think their kids do no wrong and it is ALWAYS someone else's fault of they do. Perhaps where to start would be with respect for these very hardworking people instead of showing your elitist attitude. I do not know what district you are in, but your numbers are not the norm for the WTEA, and I sure am glad my kids didn't go to school with yours. And just so you know, I have two children, both now college graduates with advanced degrees and both working professionals. Public education worked well! And we respected our teachers and the fine job they did. I am out of here. I do not have time for narrow-minded views.
where to start- have the teachers apply for their jobs - WI MT
[ In Reply To ..]
We have some good teachers here, but we have more bad ones here who are biding for retirement and refuse to do their jobs and are way overpaid. If teachers actually had real job reviews and could be "gasp" fired for poor job performance instead of being overly protected by the union then we would not even be having this discussion because all we would have were teachers who loved their jobs, loved the kids and in turn parents would be more involved rather than the majority of the teachers counting the days until they could collect their big fat pension and just keep pushing the kids off to the next grade without taking any personal responsibility. Whose fault is it if a child can't read in 6th grade? Sorry, but our school district is the norm, 51% of the students on reduced or free lunch programs and the pay rates for the teachers are average as compared to the rest of the state. I threw in the private school thing because you were being elitist, assuming that public school education via the union is the only way and I am telling you it is not. They are many school districts in other states getting rid of the unions and the kids are doing better (Colorado). And absolutely I will home school my kids before I let some teachers union go on strike and hold my kids education hostage over a 5.6% increase in their pension and $175 a month for health benefits. Just like there are great MTs and some not so good ones, the same goes for teachers. The difference is the bad MTs get fired or find different jobs.
