He must be so proud!
Former Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin may have drifted into national obscurity following his loss in Missouri's 2012 Senate race, but his contentious comments about rape -- which helped sink his political bid - will live on in syndication: Tonight's episode of NBC's "Law & Order: SVU" borrows elements of the Akin controversy for a plotline of its own.
The episode, entitled "Legitimate Rape," tells the story of "a high-profile rape victim" who "must face off against her attacker in court," according to NBC promo material. And while it's likely only loosely inspired by the events that transpired on the campaign trail, some of the dialogue is, as the promo touts, "ripped from the headlines."
"It's nearly impossible for a victim of legitimate rape to become pregnant," one older male character says, in a preview. The comments closely echo Akin's August remarks, that in the cases of "legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."
Akin's comments, which ignited a national controversy, were a huge boon to his Democratic Senate opponent, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., who was fighting an uphill battle for re-election.
In a tweet yesterday, she responded to news of Akin's shadow appearance.
"Now this is surreal," she said.
;so I looked him up on Wikiquote to see if there's anything more. Not much, but I did like these nuggests:
"And yet we have terrorists in our own culture called abortionists." I didn't realize that abortionists do what they do in order to strike fear into the hearts of the other fetus-Americans. This savage Jihad on embryos must end
"Now, Social Security through the years, for many many people, has been a terrible investment. It's really a tax, that's all it is. Social Security is a tax." Well, except for the fact that hundreds of millions of Americans have collected social security at some point, he's right.
And the best one for last: "You find that along with the culture of death go all kinds of other law-breaking: not following good sanitary procedure, giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant, cheating on taxes, all these kinds of things, misuse of anesthetics so that people die or almost die. All of these things are common practice, and all of that information is available for America." These problems are so rampant. My doctor's done two abortions on me and I'm a man. Things are getting out of hand. People dying left and right, not washing their hands. It's anarchy!
