Colin Powell speaks about President Obama

Posted: Oct 25, 2012

Powell publicly endorsed President Obama for re-election on "CBS This Morning" Thursday

"I voted for him in 2008 and I plan to stick with him in 2012 and I'll be voting for he and for Vice President Joe Biden next month."

Powell explained his choice to Charlie Rose and Norah O'Donnell:

When he took over, the country was in very very difficult straits. We were in the one of the worst recessions we had seen in recent times, close to a depression. The fiscal system was collapsing. Wall Street was in chaos, we had 800,000 jobs lost in that first month of the Obama administration and unemployment peaked a few months later at 10 percent. So we were in real trouble. The auto industry was collapsing, the housing was start[ing] to collapse and we were in very difficult straits. And I saw over the next several years, stabilization come back in the financial community, housing is now starting to pick up after four years, it's starting to pick up. Consumer confidence is rising."

republican. Then why aren't you endorsing the republican candidate. Fine to endorseObama, but too ashamed to call himself a democrat. He's lost my respect.

W didn't seem to agree. - What kind of respect is that?

Respect contingent on surrendering his right to make a highly informed choice of his own and joining the utterly clueless hater's cult?

Moderate conservative have really serious problems with - the extremists who've taken over the GOP. sm

Extremists are in a class by themselves--liberal and conservative--they're far more like each other than the moderates of their parties, to the point that the extremists are enemies of those who wear the same party label but who want to run the country with a good sense and cooperation intended to serve everyone as best possible.
Agreed. I thought he showed a great deal - of character in calling it like he sees it sm

It's not surprising that he's being ripped apart by the fringe element, though.
Wow - me

I wish I had those rose-colored glasses. I haven't seen anything like what he described - 600,000 women alone under Obama's watch now are on unemployment....this is a pro-woman guy? Hardly. And economic growth, financial stability - wow. Wonder what Powell has been smoking.
Did you post in the wrong place? Where in his endorsement - did General Powell mention women?

If you read anything further at all about his support of Obama, you'll find as much concern over Mitt's indiscernible foreign policy statements as he has voice over the economy in his statement to Charlie Rose. You seem to be missing his overall focus on stability. Romney can't even reach the short end of the stick in that measure. Then again, it must be a terrible disappointment for the GOP that they can't parade General Powell's "defection" to the other side around today. Hence, instant evisceration of the most personal kind is the order of the day.

It would be very surprising if all those undecided independents suddenly lost all respect for him now that he has clearly made his position known.
I agree. I was a moderate Republican - KLM

I recently changed my affiliation to Independent because of the hard-right turn the GOP has taken, and I know others who have done the same.
Same here. New Independent voter; too much freakish stuff going on any more. nm - wcgirl

and the use of transparent "code word" insults they'd be really disappointed if we all didn't understand. Contrary to how some in the GOP like to style him, General Powell is a conservative, but despite all the honors and respect he has earned he has the usual non-white conservative's problem with acceptance by today's GOP. He's not leaving, though. Like most of us, he understands that the GOP must change if it is to survive as a major voice in American politics. This ...

General Powell Supports Single Payer ObamacareDec 10, 2013
ABC news reported General Powell's statement: “I am not an expert in health care, or Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act, or however you choose to describe it, but I do know this: I have benefited from that kind of universal health care in my 55 years of public life,” Powell said, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal, last week at an annual “survivors celebration breakfast” in Seattle for those who, like Powell, have battled prostate cancer.  “ ...

Did President Obama Know About The VA Problems?May 19, 2014
It's being reported that the president knew about the problems at the VA since 2008, and so he should since he is Commander in Chief. How President Obama Could Lose My SupportApr 13, 2011
I have no political heroes. None! I don't see President Obama as a hero. I don't see him as a villain. I think he's done some things well and others not so well. However, his speech will determine for me whether I will support him or not. There is not one person running on the other side that I would tolerate so far, so I'm sure hoping he doesn't lose me. President Obama Clashes With McCain InMay 25, 2010
President Barack Obama battled with Senate Republicans in a tense closed-door meeting Tuesday, facing tough criticism from his GOP adversaries — including John McCain — on issues ranging from health care to border security.  Senators and other sources inside the meeting described the gathering as “testy” and “direct” — and Sen. President Obama Approval RatingOct 24, 2012
I just took a look at Real Clear Politics and noticed that President Obama's job approval rating is overall +3.4 and Gallup has it at +11 for the past couple of days, and more people polled have approved of his job performance than have not for quite some time.  If this is the case, and it appears to be, why would people vote for Mitt Romney and deal with the unknown?  It strikes me as odd since Romney seems to be somewhat ahead in the polls with the exception of IBD/TIPP. ...
