Moderate Republican Colin Powell chooses Sunday's Meet the Press

Posted: Jan 14, 2013

and the use of transparent "code word" insults they'd be really disappointed if we all didn't understand.

Contrary to how some in the GOP like to style him, General Powell is a conservative, but despite all the honors and respect he has earned he has the usual non-white conservative's problem with acceptance by today's GOP. He's not leaving, though. Like most of us, he understands that the GOP must change if it is to survive as a major voice in American politics.

This posting of his words is backed up by video of him at the link below for those who prefer to hear him speak without filtering through bias. From thinkprogress.com:

"Colin Powell Calls Out The GOP’s Racism Problem: There Is ‘A Dark Vein Of Intolerance’

On Sunday, during an appearance on Meet The Press, Colin Powell condemned the GOP’s “dark vein of intolerance” and the party’s repeated use of racial code words to oppose President Obama and rally white conservative voters.

Without mentioning names, Powell singled out former Mitt Romney surrogate and New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu for calling Obama “lazy” and Sarah Palin, who, Powell charged, used slavery-era terms to describe Obama:

POWELL: There’s also a dark — a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party. What do I mean by that? I mean by that that they still sort of look down on minorities. How can I evidence that?

When I see a former governor say that the President is “shuckin’ and jivin’,” that’s racial era slave term. When I see another former governor after the president’s first debate where he didn’t do very well, says that the president was lazy. He didn’t say he was slow. He was tired. He didn’t do well. He said he was lazy. Now, it may not mean anything to most Americans, but to those of us who are African Americans, the second word is shiftless and then there’s a third word that goes along with that. The birther, the whole birther movement. Why do senior Republican leaders tolerate this kind of discussion within the party?

Powell added that the Republican Party is “having an identity problem,” noting that its significant shift to the right has produced “two losing presidential campaigns.” “I think what the Republican Party needs to do now is a very hard look at itself and understand that the country is changed,” he said. “If the Republican Party does not change along with that demographic, they a going to be in trouble.”

Powell also called on Republicans to focus on a more equitable and progressive economic policies that help middle and lower income Americans, as well as immigration reform. “Everybody wants to talk about who is going to be the candidate,” Powell said. “You better think first about what’s the party actually going to represent.”

Code Words = Conspiracy Theory - -

no, that's not implied at all - how did you come up with that?

[ In Reply To ..]
code words doesn't translate into conspiracy theory in anyone's vernacular lexicon. Powell is a very intelligent man. It's ludicrous to suggest that he is a conspiracy theorist, although you would appear to be a good candidate for same based on the abject meaninglessness of your post.

It's a conspiracy to make racists look like... - well, just what they are. They've

[ In Reply To ..]
been used to getting away with it by hiding themselves in crowds under banners like "family values" and "moral majority."

If we understand that many were themselves fooled by their disguises (after all their families love them, their own friends value them), then it becomes understandable that they may be misconstruing how it comes about that they're now politically standing exposed and alone, condemned for immorality and for their part in losing two general elections in a row for conservatism.

It must be an evil conspiracy against them. How else to explain it?
I used to respect Powell greatly, but HE is the - one appearing racist here ! nm

Good advice for a fractured party - RC

Whether you believe there is prevalent racism in the Republican party or it is (as the poster above me seems to believe) all a big conspiracy theory, the Republican party needs to get on the same page if they plan on winning any elections in the future.

I blame the Tea Party and their extremist views for breaking this party into two fractions: The anti-government revolutionists and the moderate conservatives that most individuals can actually relate to.

Not that I have a problem with it. It works out in my party's favor quite well.

This is really sad. - ZvilleMT

It wasn't that long ago it was the left who were calling him the "token coon," the "sell-out," and the "house negro." And who can forget the April 12, 2004 Daily Kos article titled "Uncle Tom Powell stumps for Massah Bush."

Dark vein of intolerance, indeed.

What we need to do is abandon the GOP - xcopper

and follow a party that has principles and morals. The GOP is nothing but another part of the Dem party..

There would have to be a third party for that... - ZvilleMT

one that would have very few of the current members of either party leadership (or what passes for leadership these days).
Thats what we need to find or start or whatever - xcopper

There is too much corruption in this country..Best course of action could be either find a new party..or vote out every incumbent and in 3 years you have all new blood...When a politician gets rich, as they all do within the first few years, there is a problem..It is nothing more then a public service job..Way out of control
I like it - good place to start would be term limits. - ZvilleMT

No more of this career politician thing. I also think salaries should be cut drastically - none of them actually do this job full time.
We need a whole new system because the dems and pubs - annieb

are not working for the people. There are many parties, green, independent, etc, but they get pushed to the back. The democrats make fun of them as though they are not legitimate party.
What we need is a complete makeover. Most everyone in both parties need to be replaced. Every day they show they are not working for the people. It's sad that it has gotten this far.

I say bring in individuals who have good ideas and who will work for the people. Bring in people who have experience and knowledge of how to fix the country. We just don't have it with the current crowd.

That attitude revealed is also a major factor in the decline - of the GOP. I agree you need to abandon

[ In Reply To ..]
the GOP to itself and make yourselves a third party.

I remember the days when I crossed the ballot almost every election to vote for a good GOP candidate or sensible referendum. I want those days back.

To think I once respected him. He is the 2nd biggest - racist in the country.

Colin Powell Speaks About President ObamaOct 25, 2012
Powell publicly endorsed President Obama for re-election on "CBS This Morning" Thursday "I voted for him in 2008 and I plan to stick with him in 2012 and I'll be voting for he and for Vice President Joe Biden next month." Powell explained his choice to Charlie Rose and Norah O'Donnell: When he took over, the country was in very very difficult straits. We were in the one of the worst recessions we had seen in recent times, close to a depression. The fiscal system was collapsing. Wall ...

It was on camera, so he wasn't speaking for their reaction so much as far beyond. Good thing. It's hardly secret that Obama is hoping to fracture the recalcitrant GOP base in the House that's devoted to obstructing absolutely anything and everything he attempts, but pure nonsense that he doesn't hope this will free the rest of the GOP House to get back to work. If he succeeds, he'll be their hero. Here's Wikipedia's take on the Ripon Society:  "The  ...

So, I am extremely liberal--by this venue's standards anyway. I was at a gathering of friends yesterday, and, yes, most of us are pretty liberal, there are a few strays, and we had a few jabs back and forth, but the point. I was told by one of my friends that I should watch Carson on Meet the Press...it was outrageous, funny, (all the other side political jabbing, you know how it goes, most of you do it with Hilary). I just had time to do it. This is the most reasonable I have seen th ...

I Can't Believe I Agreed With Hillary On Meet The Press!!!May 23, 2016
I read an article today and had seen part of Meet the Press this morning where Hillary said Trump should release his tax returns. She's not the only one saying this and I can't believe I agree with her on that subject!!! Cokie and Steve Roberts also had a good article on Trump and his taxes in the local paper today.  What gets me is the Trumpeters think it's okay for Trump to hide his taxes and it's okay that he's part of the 1% group, but in 2012 they were all ...

'Pulpit Freedom Sunday' To Defy IRSSep 27, 2010

The pastors, along with the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based nonprofit Alliance Defense Fund, are reacting to a law stating that churches are not allowed to support politicians from the pulpit, according to the ADF. The growing trend is a challenge to the IRS from the churches, and may jeopardize their all-important tax-e ...
