President Obama rumbles with House GOP

BALTIMORE — President Barack Obama on Friday accused Republicans of portraying health care reform as a "Bolshevik plot" and telling their constituents that he’s "doing all kinds of crazy stuff that's going to destroy America."

Speaking to House Republicans at their annual policy retreat here, Obama said that over-the-top GOP attacks on him and his agenda have made it virtually impossible for Republicans to address the nation’s problems in a bipartisan way.

“What happens is that you guys don’t have a lot of room to negotiate with me,” Obama said, silencing the smattering of Republicans who had applauded when he said “Bolshevik plot.” "The fact of the matter is, many of you, if you voted with the administration on something, are politically vulnerable with your own base, with your own party because what you've been telling your constituents is, ‘This guy's doing all kinds of crazy stuff that's going to destroy America.' ''

Obama’s comments came in the midst of an extraordinary back-and-forth with Republican House members – a scene straight out of the House of Commons that played out live on cable TV.

Republicans invited Obama to appear at their annual conference; the president surprised them by accepting – and then by asking that cameras and reporters be allowed into the room.

Republicans immediately agreed to the request, but they may be regretting it now.

Obama was clearly energized by the exchange – and again and again, he turned the Republicans questions against the GOP, accusing the party of obstructing legislation for political purposes and offering solutions that won’t work.

"I've read your legislation. I take a look at this stuff. And the good ideas we take," Obama said. "It can't be all or nothing, one way or the other … If we put together a stimulus package in which a third of it is tax cuts that normally you guys would support, and support for states and the unemployed and helping people stay on COBRA, that certainly your governors would support … and maybe there are some things in there, with respect to infrastructure, that you don't like … If there's uniform opposition because the Republican caucus doesn't get 100 percent or 80 percent of what you want, then it's going to be difficult to get a deal done, because that's not how democracy works."

After Obama made opening remarks, House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence (R-Ind.) asked him whether he’d embrace “across the board” tax cuts as a way to revive the economy, and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) asked him to support a line-item veto to help achieve a balanced budget.

Obama pushed back backed hard, accusing Republicans of putting party before principle and voting against his 2009 stimulus plan but then attending “ribbon cuttings” for stimulus projects in their own districts.

If Republicans believe in both across-the-board tax cuts and a balanced budget, Obama said he’d like to see their math.

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) began the session by handing Obama a stack of Republican alternatives to his policies. The president then began speaking in a conciliatory tonetelling the Republicans that he expects them to challenge his ideas – and that he understands that there are sometimes fundamental policy differences between the parties.

"Having differences of opinion, having a real debate about matters of domestic policy and national security, that's something that's not only good for our country, it's absolutely essential,” he said.

But he also criticized the Republicans for reflexively opposing his policies – even when, he said, they were in line with GOP principles. And the encounter got progressively more raucous from there

Obama urged Republicans to come to the table and work with him on policy compromises, saying Americans "didn't send us to Washington to fight each other in some political steel cage match."

What voters don’t want, he said, is "for Washington to continue being so Washington-like."

The president asked the Republicans to support his proposal to provide small businesses with a $500 tax credit for each new employee they add — an idea Republicans panned before he even made the offer. He also asked them to support his plan to freeze non-military discretionary spending for three years.

"Join me," Obama asked. "Nothing in this proposal that runs contrary to the ideological predisposition of this caucus."

"We have seen some party-line votes that have been disappointing," he said, recalling the stimulus fight. "I didn't understand then, and I still don't understand, why we got opposition in this caucus for almost $300 billion in badly needed tax cuts for the American people" and other assistance and infrastructure projects.

Obama jabbed: "Let's face it, some of you have been at the ribbon-cuttings for some of these important projects in your communities."

Continuing on a confrontational tack, Obama defended key components of his agenda, including the proposed fee on bailed-out banks – telling Boehner: "If you listen to the American people, John, they’ll tell you they want their money back."

At the end of his remarks – before taking questions – Obama told Republicans it's time to make a choice between aiming for "success at the polls" or "lasting success" for the country. "Just think about it for a while," he said. "We don't have to put it up for a vote today."

Freshman Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) went after the president harder, accusing him of breaking promising about transparency, lobbyists and partisanship.

“I can look you in the eye and tell you we have not been obstructionists,” he said.

Obama acknowleged that Chaffetz had a “legitimate complaint” about not putting health care negotiations on C-SPAN – as the president had vowed they would be – but he also asked Chaffetz what he was doing within his own caucus to make sure that Republicans were working with him in bipartisan way.

Mid-way through the questions and answers, Pence said that there would be just a few more questions.

Obama said he wasn’t in any hurry to leave.

The "get" you need is "over it." In case you haven't noticed, Obama is having a REEEAAALLLY good week. This should make bashers and blockers pretty nervous. A cold bucket of water has been dumped on all that jubilation over the message out of Massachusetts last week. Convicted murderers and whacky wiretappers out of the camp haven't helped much.

Since pubs can now kill legislation (the only thing they seem very good at) with their magic 41, and in view of the WSJ polls showing Americans already hold them responsible for the failures in Congress, who do you think is going to carry that burden between now and November if they don't change their tune?

I'm sorry, but I feel the gov't oppresses minorities. Sure, we'll give ya a place to live but it'll be a falling down piece of crap filled with a neighborhood of gangs, shootings, drugs, etc., but hey - we're providing for you. We gave you a place to life. How much of a favor is the gov't doing for these people? It's terrible to live in conditions like that, you're told what you can spend on food. But hey - they're getting something for nothing so they'll keep on voting for libs. Why do you think O wants to keep illegals here? He'll give them the right to vote.

The man is so incredibly corrupt and so is his administration. It will all come out in time. And don't any of you progressives/libs dare act shocked.

As far as social programs go for me, give me back everything I've paid into Medicare and Social Security. My husband and I are quite capable of taking care of ourselves.
Wrong to think social programs confined to minorities.. - Your bigotry is showing, dear...
[ In Reply To ..]
There is so much here you just don't get. You are blaming federal funding for gangs, shooting, drugs, etc. Affordable housing is just the tip of the iceberg.

The underlying issues there are structural problems associated with poverty, quality of education, job training, limited employment opportunities, lack of upward economic mobility, affordable housing, community services, and a whole host of other factors, including partisan politics. Bottom line here is that these are the very issues "liberal" social programs aim to address while conservative policies aim to annihilate, generating and perpetuating MORE poverty. You wanna blame somebody for insufficient and ineffective social programs? you are looking on the wrong side of the fence.

Define "these people" please. One of "these people" is my brother-in-law, who as we speak is in his 8th hour of pancreaticoduodenectomy (extended Whipple's) for pancreatic cancer diagnosd last week. He is 57 years old, has worked continuously for 40 years. He has paid income taxes for 40 years and property taxes for 22 years. He drives a cab 12-14 hours a day and is a single father supporting his daughter who has AIDs.

Without social assistance, she would have no access to medical care or treatment. This is the first time he has ever been in the hospital. He could not afford medical insurance despite the assistance his daughter gets because of her pre-existing condition (15 years now) and high cost of premiums, even without her on the policy and despite his good health.

He would not be able to have this life-sparing/saving procedure done were it not for the county. He is scared to death over what will happen to his daugther if he dies during this procedure. Hs prognosis is not that promising, 3-5 years perhaps, but that is 3-5 years more he can help keep her housed and fed and alive.

How dare you presume to know anything about who and who does not get benefits. Better hope you or your spouse do not die prematurely, come down with a serious illness, get kicked out of health coverage plan or be excluded if one of you changes jobs, have your house burn down, lose your jobs or any number of other of life's calamities that can easily happen to ANYONE.

You seem mighty secure in a world that is unpredictable and WAY beyond the control you seem to think you have over your future. BTW, any of these things can happen to your friends or family members. Keep in mind that all those faceless nameless "folks" are somebody else's mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, cousin, neice, nephew, neighbor or friend.

He stopped watching political news and such because "it just made me lose faith in people. They are only interested in themselves." Direct quote, and he summed it up for me perfectly. Certainly described some people on this forum, and you know who you are. The attitude of "it is all about me-me-me!"

Aside from stress, it's a question of seeking out positive vs negative spheres of influence and where you go to look for inner peace. Spiritual enhancement (as opposed to religious dogma) is a great mitigator of stress. Exploring the teachings (and practice) of Hindu, Buddhist, Zoroastrian, Bahai, Jain and Universalist texts, scriptures and masters along with Native American beliefs has provided a great deal of comfort for me lately.

Thanks for the kind words.

Anyway, I now try to focus on more positive things than what I see posted here. I have enough stress at home and don't need any more from here.

I've said before. I didn't vote on President Obama but he's my president, too, since he was elected fairly. If I don't like the way things are going I can vote against him again in 3 years.

I am frightened by his policies but on the other hand I really like the guy. Not necessarily his politics but something about him is fascinating. Everyone should remember that when things go wrong it takes many years for them to go this wrong. He inherited a mess, George Bush inherited a mess, Clinton inherited a mess and so on and so on. We are paying the piper now. All through history this is just the way it is. When prosperity returns we as Americans with the freedoms we have will go right back to over spending, charging things we don't need, etc.

I was absolutely up in arms when he tried to infiltrate the brains of children with his Jesus-Loves-Me-tune reworded to praise Obama. There was another charismatic leader that tried to get to the children...Adolf Hitler. He had the Hitler Youth. Scary.

I'm not saying that this was what Mr. Obama had in mind but I was certainly happy that my daughter and son-in-law were planning on taking my grandchildren out of school the day it was to be played. The school board decided not to show it.

As for this first year, many many presidents are very much disliked after the first year. Things could change for him. Really though what did Americans expect when they elected a man who only had junior senator on his resume?!? He may learn. He may straighten things out. Since I've already stated I did not vote on him, please don't hang me for my opinion. We (Americans) got what he voted on. Now we have to live with him as President for 3 more years. Pray that things in the future are better. If they are not, vote him out. That's the American way.

The man thinks before he speaks and obviously draws on a vast fund of knowledge. He is also a quick study with excellent political instincts. He's not even down for the count yet.

He prioritized bipartisanship during the killing of health care reform. This is not a mistake he is likely to repeat. He has just turned that concept it in a new direction. I for one am fascinated by what lies in store for the minority who has to face voter scrutiny between now and November, now that he has the stage all set up.

Actions speak louder than words. You answered your own question. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Time to move past this whining about being shut out. Scores of concessions to party of just say no ripped the HCR bill to shreds and made it unrecognizable from its original form, to the point that no one supports it as it stands now. Spending freeze is another concession. Allowing the ban on offshore drilling to expire is another concession.

Demands from a party who has absolutely no intention of negotiating in good faith is at the root of congressional stalemate. O knows what to do about this and how to do it. SOTU, town hall meetings, bipartisan QA rumbles...all in one week. Strategy has been reset and the fix has been set in motion. GOP can either play ball or go down in defeat in November. Pay your money and take your choice.

BTW, I put that "party of no ideas" in quotes because they were not my words. That is the way I heard a repulican aide spin the meaning of the moniker and the outcome of the GOP QA. To me, party of no means just say no to everything in sight, no-O, no leadership, no cohesion, no platform, no unity, almost no identifiable party for as far as the eye can see.
"A party who has absolutely no intention of - negotiating in good faith"?? WHAT?

Pubs must doing something right in Virginia, New Jersey, Mass... etc. How can they possibly win races when they are so horrible? Oh, the humanity.
Previous post title answered questions.. By their actions - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Actions are the primary source. By doing a lot of homework over 40+ years of political activism and engagement. By keeping up with radio, TV, newspaper, magazine, internet and international news sources, written from all political perspectives. By paying special attention to in-depth investigative reporting.

By reading books and watching movies and docmentaries examining specific issues. By taking university, community college and leisure learning courses on global, national, state and local political and government structure, party differences, platform content, and issues. By keeping up with current events and being aware of historical context.

By attending political functions staged by all parties, including protests, speeches, lectures (given by candidates, critics and authors), seminars and party meetings. By engaging in conversations and debates at these functions and in chat rooms whenever possible.

By educating myself and staying informed before casting a vote, a civic duty I have learned over the years to take very seriously.

I've never heard of a state named etc. Where is that? GOP wins local and national races for a variety of reasons because their candidates represent viewpoints that for the most part (not always) I oppose. That's the way the process works. However, each race is won or lost on its own merits and within a unique set of circumstances and conditions. What the outcomes actually mean becomes blurred when taken out of their frames of reference and used to predict future outcomes.

BTW, how do you form your political opinions?

One dem president and a room full of republicans - NJ

[ In Reply To ..]
It was amusing. They (the republicans) could not trip him up, could not present any concrete solutions to problems, and dared not throw out the buzzwords they use to get their base riled up. The questions they posed to him generally came after rambling accusatory rhetoric, and Obama addressed both the questions and the partisan puffery.

He called them on wanting their way 100% and being unable to vote for anything less. In other words, he recognized that the Republicans do not want bipartisanship, they want to run everything.

He let them know that, by spreading the lies and wild accusations, they left themselves no room to work with him because if they supported anything he did, they could not explain it to their base. That was a great point and addresses the fallacy that the republicans want to work in a bipartisan manner.

Now, maybe, we can lay to rest all the crap about the Republicans trying hard to work with the dems. It is not accomplished by inflammatory speech (loved the "Bolshevik plot" line) and no attempt to compromise.

Now, is there any republican who could stand up to a roomful of dems without melting down? Heh, rhetorical question ^^

The Big O did obviously not have a teleprompter for this occasion but clearly drew from his notes approximately every 2 seconds during his protracted speech before he allowed questions. (Why does this remind me of a press conference?)

Ahem, other points I noted: His boast of "new jobs" to my understanding only involves jobs paid by either federal or state government. Isn't that taxpayer dollars? He keeps reminding us of "creating jobs", but these are the only new jobs he speaks of.

He spoke of economists quoting this and that several times, which he seems to believe 100%, but the general conclusions of those sacred opinions always seemed to agree. Huh? (Sorry, I gotta laugh at that one!)

When questioned about putting off the budget freeze until 2011, he gave standard excuses. In his SOTU address, he referred to that as basically what so many American households are having to do. Sorry, Mr. BHO, but when we do budget cuts we don't take 12 months to implement them......cannot afford to.

I only watched half of this, will try to catch the rest tomorrow, but I didn't see anything overwhelming here.

As usual, the big O reminded us countless times that he is "The President", which always amuses me. It's almost like he can't believe it himself.

Funny. He seemed pretty focused on pubs and issues. - Which R leader could do as well?
[ In Reply To ..]
How much time did he spend on introduction vs taking questions? Notes not needed when answering protracted unscripted soapbox partisan questions. Total recall served him well. Those who looked for substance rather than criticism do not share that press conference vision.

Unnemployed (1 out of 10) Americans will take government or private sector jobs. They are not that picky. They also vote. O demonstrated knowledge of a much broader jobs creation resource base beyond those federally funded. Look to the no-O party to riddle those initiatives full of holes, or at least give it their best shot. That's what they (try to) do best.

Those "this or that" economists also agree that during a recession, deficit spending is in order. Unlike you, they don't find much humor in that prospect and take more of a "hold your nose" approach. It isn not surprising you can't understand the strategy behind a delayed and limited spending freeze and instead would try to push it up to NOW NOW NOW! despite the fact that most economists believe it is a horrible idea and that 2011 is even too soon, in terms of where economic recovery will be at that point in time. Personally, I hopes he changes his mind.

Many of his references to president were in the cotext of reminding GOP that his powers are limited and they are the ones who will be facing the music in November. Recent WSJ recent polls show, only 27% hold O responsible for the stagnation in Congress, 41% hold Dems responsible and 47% blame pubs. Seems like he just might know what he's talking about.

The pubs did hit Obama hard with things and Obama's answers were nothing but lies.

The whole promise of meetings being on CSPAN for healthcare and he said they were....which is BS considering all those closed-door meetings he had regarding healthcare.

Or how about the lobbyists he promised had no place in Washington under his administration and then he said that his administration has had less lobbyists than any administration before him....which is a blatant lie.

He may have been calm and cool but he was lying through his teeth, not fully answering the questions, and doing more finger pointing at the pubs than actually taken responsibility for the lies he spread during his campaign. This president will never take the blame for anything.

I truly believe that some of you need to wise up when it comes to our President. It just amazes me that some of you refuse to hear the lies. The evidence to his lies is so astounding and obvious but yet you stand there and defend him with rhetoric and complete BS.

Excuse me while I vomit!

I was amazed at the lies - lie detector

as well. He was also questioned about the earmarks that he promised he would go line by line and not sign anything with any earmarks.....which he later signed a bill with MANY earmarks....and yet he stood before the pubs and said that his bills were earmark free. Now how the heck does he get away with saying blatant lies like that.

Evidently the reset button is not the only one he activated. - You can regurg O-bash

to your heart's content, but fact remains the SOTU and GOP retreat QA were big scores for dems. Might want to keep an eye on those inevitable opinion polls over the next couple of weeks.

So what if Obama was calm and cool and answered with confidence? It doesn't change the fact that lies were spewing out of his mouth. How can you not see these obvious and blatant lies that he doesn't even attempt to hide because people like you continuously give him a free pass for everything he says and does.

The only people willing to give him points for this Q&A session are liberals. There are still a lot of pubs and independents who think he is full of crap.
If you could be more specific, perhaps we would - have something to talk about.

Pubs in attendance did not seem too delighted with the outcome. "We should have never done that" I think was the overall sentiment post pow-wow.

First of all, Obama said no lobbyists would have a place in his administration. After making that promise he now has....what 17?....in his administration and when asked about it at the Q&A session he said that his administration has fewer lobbyists than any administration before him....which is a lie....and instead of admitting he said that and he went back on his word....he pointed the attention to other administrations.

He said he would go line by line and not sign anything that had earmarks in it. That was a campaign promise. He then signed a huge bill with plenty of earmarks and when asked about it at the Q&A session he said he has NOT signed a bill with earmarks. A blatant and outright lie.

He said all debates about healthcare would be on C-span and when questioned about this at the Q&A session he said that some were....but once again....he failed to comment on the meetings held behind closed doors.

He still dodged questions and refused to take blame for anything he has done during his administration. It is amazing that Obama has promised to do so many things but when he doesn't do what he promised he does the exact opposite....he never had anything to do with it and it wasn't his fault. It is just pathetic and so obvious and yet some of people still continue to worship him.
Agree. No bigger hypocrite than Obama. I guess for his - worshippers, it takes one to know one.nm

If your family is over its head in debt, whether it be mortgage, credit cards, personal loans, etc, how do YOU dig yourself out? Do you go further into debt? Do you call your family and friends and ask them to help, thereby making yourself more in debt cuz you have to pay that back? Do you pretend it's just simply not true, ignore it, make what payments you can each month, and hope for the best? DO YOU EXPECT TO DIE IN DEBT AND HAVE THAT DEBT GO TO YOUR CHILDREN?

Come on, people, think here.

he provided his reasons for recusing the 12 (correction on that inflated figure of 17) former lobbyists. This is in sharp contast to over 100 in W's administration. How about those 138 Reagan appointees who had been either convicted, indicted, subjects of official investigatins for misconduct and/or criminal violaations and similar record-setting numbers under Clinton. So how do you figure Obama lied about this?

You mean those earmarks pubs riddled the Omnibus bill with, suggesting the need to bribe them into passing funding measures?

Please specify dodges and refusals. Explaning where blame is shared and/or one-sided is not the same as refusing to take blame. What is worship to some is support to others. Please don't conflate but continue to puzzle over why it is that his support remains unwavering.

That's because he *is* full of crap NM - anon

Apparently, Obama thought he'd been invited to - Wrestlemania

[ In Reply To ..]
Engaging in "clever" repartee that was (apparently unnoticed by his adoring news media fans) replete with tired mischaracterizations and outrageously pugnacious language, Obama did exactly what the Republicans were quite satisfied to have the public see him doing - i.e., being anything BUT "bipartisan" as he had just pledged to be in his SOTU address.

Anyone with a speck of political savvy would have presented a very different image of himself. He didn't lay a glove on the Republicans with his dog-and-pony show, but he sure damaged himself.

This wasn't Wrestlemania...it was ROPE-A-DOPE, and Obama was the dope.

House GOP Sending Obama A Message On Health RepealJan 05, 2011
By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR, Associated Press Ricardo Alonso-zaldivar, Associated Press WASHINGTON – Eager to show who's now in charge, the House's new Republican majority plans to vote to repeal President Barack Obama's landmark health care overhaul before he even shows up in their chamber to give his State of the Union address. Republican-led House Blocks Obama Immigration PlanDec 04, 2014
Washington (AFP) - In a symbolic rebuke to US President Barack Obama's unilateral action on immigration, the Republican-led House of Representatives voted Thursday to block his plan to shield millions of people from deportation. The bill, which passed 219-197 along party lines, was introduced by conservatives furious with what they consider Obama's abuse of power when he announced his executive order last month. But it is unlikely to reach the floor of the Senate, where Obama's ...

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (R) attacked the White House holiday card in an article on Fox News Radio. "From our family to yours, may your holidays shine with the light of the season," reads the inside of the card, which is signed by the Obamas (including Bo). Palin characterized ...
