Church closes food bank because it attracts poor people

Posted: Aug 31, 2011

I've tried explaining this to others before, about why I am no longer a Christian.  But THIS is probably the best example of why.

Headline: “Church closes food bank because it attracts poor people”

“Winnipeg: A busy church food bank, known for offering warm drinks and snacks to its regulars, has announced it’s closing because it is attracting too many poor people.

“‘It’s attracting a lot of street people that make it uncomfortable,’ said Charlotte Prossen, Unity Truth Centre minister Thursday, ‘It’s creating social unrest in the church’

“‘A food bank is a social service and that is not who we are’

“Ms. Prossen said the program is being cancelled to focus on more church-specific activities. The church’s board of trustees made the decision to cancel the bimonthly food bank after receiving an e-mail from a sister church in Victoria.

“‘Most clients of food banks have not yet come to a sense of personal responsibility in life. They are still in denial, blame or seeing the world as owing them,’ wrote Rev. David Durksen of the Unity Church of Victoria.

“Ms. Prossen praised the work done by food banks, and said the church will still collect food for baskets but focus more on people’s spiritual hunger.”

Here's the link to where I read about this:

These Christians should be ashamed of themselves.

FYI - just me

I was really shocked by this! So, I tried to find any original information about this situation.

As it turns out, this happened back in 2000! Over 10 years ago! AND, a lot of what is out on the web now has been taken out of context..

Just an FYI =]
Don't always believe everything you read.

Huh? - Unbelievable

[ In Reply To ..]
So you're saying that it's perfectly okay for Christians to do this kind of thing because they did it over 10 years ago? I guess that makes the Crusades and witch hunts okay too.

The real situation - just me

[ In Reply To ..]
I personally don't like to see any group maligned based on false information. I apologize for trying to educate you. I also NEVER said I agreed with the decision

Incidentally (if you haven't read the article I posted) the food back was NOT run by the church, but by Winnepeg Harvest. The actual food bank was just using the church's space. So--the food bank itself never closed, the church just decided to not let them use the space anymore, and nor are the under any obligation to let Winnepeg Harvest use it.
And I quote: "The Unity Truth Centre on Arlington is standing by its decision to close the food bank that Winnipeg Harvest operated on its property."

And yes, I do think it makes a difference that this happened MORE THAN 10 years ago. Who's to say the situation hasn't changed and Winnepeg Harvest food bank is happily using church space now to facilitate their activities? Or that the church started some other type of charity program that well replaces the original idea? A lot can happen in a decade, but I bet you won't ever find out what happened next without directly calling the church.

A lot of people say that Christians are too quick to judge. That street goes both ways.

That has to be one of the most UN Christ-like messes I have heard yet. - Fallen Catholic

[ In Reply To ..]
I agree and there is NO BIBLICAL SUPPORT FOR THIS SORT OF AN ACTION. In fact, if they had read their Bible, that church would have been feeding its OWN spiritual starvation, which is apparently a huge void where most of the congregation has fallen in and suffocated.

By their fruits you shall know them... - hmmm

[ In Reply To ..]
A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.

"Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them."

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’" Matt. 7:18-23

Go ahead and bash one "Christian" church that isn't living up to your expectation of what a Christian is...

but all the while you're overlooking the hundreds of Christian organizations that have consistently put the care of the poor at the forefront, such as:

Compassion International
Samaritan's Purse
World Vision
Show Hope

Just to name a few.

I don't remember reading about any atheist relief organizations helping out in Haiti after the earthquake or in Indonesia after the tsunami.

But please - let's look at the tree and pick out just the one bad apple.

So if you didn't read about it, it never happened? - Atheists organize and coordinate

[ In Reply To ..]
not only with just about any secular NGO, humanitarian or charitable organization you can think of (way too many to list here), but also amongst their own, since they are not burdened by competitive denominational rivalry:

Atheist Aid to Haiti
Atheist Alliance International
Atheist Foundation - coordinated one of the atheist-sponsored Indonesian tsunami relief efforts (there were others)
Atheists Helping the Homeless
Atheists United
Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain
Freedom From Religion Foundation
Foundation Beyond Belief
gay & lesbian humanist
James Randi Educational Foundation
Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers
Pharyngula
Rationalist Association
Rationalist International
Reasonable New York
Secular Student Alliance
The British Humanist Association
The International Humanist and Ethical Union
Think Atheist - Spearheaded disaster relief after Japan's earthquake
The Reason Project
The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science
The Skeptics Society

Just to name a few, as you say. You're choppin' down the wrong tree. Maybe next time you should leave that judging thing you find so irresistible up to the Lord.

Churches vs Christianity - Non-church-goer

[ In Reply To ..]
I agree, it doesn't matter when it happened, apparently it happened.

What I really want to say is this. I consider myself a Christian and try to pretty much follow the "red letter" writings of Jesus. I've done the church thing, different churches, and I find I can no longer participate in that particular activity. Too much politics, too much judgment, etc.

Too many atrocities have been committed in the name of Christianity, and religion in general, throughout history, including that pathetic man in Florida, I think it is, burning Korans and only God knows what else he is spewing. I believe true Christianity is a state of being and believing and has nothing to do with any kind of organized institution. I'm not saying all churches are bad, and I know for a fact there are many, many, many good and wonderful people who attend churches of all denominations. I'm simply saying, if you have the stomach for politics and in-fighting that will inevitably happen in any gathering of a large group of people, go for it. It's just not for me.

My Christianity is in my heart, and hopefully, most of my actions, though I do slip and fall occasionally as does everyone. Don't throw the Jesus out with the bath water though, unless you truly don't believe, which is certainly your choice. He had a lot of amazing things to teach in how we conduct our daily lives, and I find it a comfort to be able to pray to him on a one-to-one basis.

Very well said. - hmmm

Christians and Christ - Unbelievable

[ In Reply To ..]
I totally agree with what you have said. And while I said that I am no longer a Christian, that didn't mean that I am no longer a believer. :-)

I had googled it, so I knew that this didn't happen yesterday. But, the fact that it happened at all and by people who call themselves "Christians" seemed to be a perfect example of why I am no longer a Christian.

Christians are supposed to be Christ-like. But so many of them act exactly opposite of Christ. I wonder if those poor people and street people would have bothered Christ and I wonder if Christ would have shut down that food bank?

In the famous words of Mahatma Gandhi: "I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

No one will stand before God... - hmmm

[ In Reply To ..]
and be able to cop out by saying, I didn't become a Christian because the Christians I met didn't live up to their testimony.

"Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire." Rev. 20:11-15

You don't read that anyone here opened their mouth in the own defense.

What think ye of Christ?

Christians... - Mary

[ In Reply To ..]
are not "Christ-like" because no person could ever be the kind of person Christ was. Us humans make mistakes and always will; it is human nature. We have to ask forgiveness and try to do better but that doesn't mean by any stretch of the imagination that to be "Christian" means to be perfect or like Christ. We are followers of Christ. We believe in him and supposedly strive to become more like him, knowing that we never will. I am a Christian who loves the Lord but still makes mistakes on a daily basis. What those in this church did was wrong, but it is also wrong to judge the entire Christian community for something like this. People can change and regret things they do. That's why Christ tells us not to judge. It is not wrong to say that a certain act/behavior is wrong...it is wrong to condemn a person or persons for their wrongdoings. They may have repented and you just will never know.

Jesus said to look to him for the example, not others. Why is it that we get off track by looking to other people for guidance? The bottom line is this, it does not matter who believes, God is still God, noone can change that. Jesus Christ himself was not part of a organized church. He went about sharing the Gospel (Good news) with others. Jesus Christ said that you will know a believer by the fruit that he bears, not the church he goes to. You should never look to others for guidance, because others are still learning. But God knows everything. He is the past, present and the future, so look to him and only him for a personal relationship with our very Creator.

Christ was perfect, Christians are not - Jan

[ In Reply To ..]
The reason some Christians do not act "Christlike" is because we all are imperfect. Jesus Christ was/is perfect even when He was here on earth. We are being made perfect daily, but just because I became a Christian doesn't instantly make me Christlike and perfect.

We really shouldn't blame God for what people do. - BTDT

Yeah, they are bad, but people are like that. No one is special.

Church closes food bank - jesus4me

[ In Reply To ..]
These people are not Christians. They do not even believe in the Trinity. A true Christian church would not turn away anyone. They are obviously more centered on their image than their love for others.

Belief in Trinity is not a prerequisite for salvation. - As long as they know Christ is the way.

That's all that matters.
