Medicare Faces Unfunded Liability of $38.6T, or $328,404 for Each U.S. Household

(CNSNews.com) – Medicare faces an unfunded liability of $38.6 trillion, according to the Medicare Trustees report released Monday.

The unfunded liability is the amount that has been promised in benefits to people now alive that will not be funded by the tax revenue the system is expected to take in to pay for those benefits. (The Medicare Trustees calculate the unfunded liability for a period of 75 years into the future.)

The $38.6 trillion in unfunded benefits Medicare is expected to pay over the next 75 years equals $328,404.43 for each of the 117,538,000 households the Census Bureau said there were in the United States in 2010.

“From the 75-year budget perspective, the present value of the additional resources that would be necessary to meet projected expenditures, at current-law levels for the three programs combined, is $38.6 trillion,” reads the report.

“To put this very large figure in perspective, it would represent 4.3 percent of the present value of projected GDP over the same period ($907 trillion),” states the Trustees report.

The extra money needed to fund the unfunded liabilities would have to come from something other than payroll taxes, benefit taxes, and premium payments scheduled under current law.

The report also says that there is “a significant likelihood” that the “projected HI and SMI expenditures are substantially understated as a result of potentially impracticable elements of current law.”

There will be no SS and no Medicare by the time those that are around my age (40) reach retirement age. But Heaven help the politician who even dares say we need reform - all that translates to is pushing grandma over a cliff. Guess we can kiss all that money we've been putting into it goodbye.

So..what is the answer to this problem then? - Trigger Happy

If we reform it, people will lose some coverage, but if we don't reform it, it will eventually be nonexistant. So what do we do? Keep doing the same thing until there is nothing left for anybody? No matter which way we go....someone is gonna get screwed out of the money they paid in.

I believe the best way to reform SS is to treat... - sm

payroll deductions as an insurance premium, paying out after retirement age only when and if income from all sources falls below a certain amount.

Best solution I've seen so far is - to treat SS privately

and is a self-directed plan. Individuals make the investment choices (or not)as they do on 401(K), private Roth accounts, etc. If you don't like making investment choices, money can be directed to money market or savings account, savings bonds, etc. Stats have shown, hands down, anyone investing on their own retires with a monthly income far in excess of what govt. pays out on your SS. Figures are available for review, or you can do your calculations by using any of the free investment websites. You can plug in all sorts of variables and get an excellent idea of what you can do without the govt. stealing your money.

There was also a plan put to Obama to have people that retire with a net worth over a certain dollar amount (i.e., the wealthy that Obama loves to bash) have the option to waive their SS payment, get the SS in 1 lump sum, and remove all further obligation from the govt. to pay them nothing else.

Since all proposals were put forth to Obama by Repubs/conservatives, all of them were dismissed out of hand without any review whatsoever. Since the govt had no access to your funds and could not use it as the govt saw fit, the idea was not agreeable to Obama.

One comparison I saw was SS income on retire: $ 1200.00/month. Personal sector income based on private SS management on retire: $8600.00/month.

P.S. For those interested, some of these ideas were in Ryan's plan, but since there are so few that read it and only repeat DNC talking points, most people don't know that. Hope those people like the taste of cat food.
How would that work exactly? Would everyone be required - to have an IRA or a 401K? nm

Not the OP, but I've read articles about the ideas she posted - what if

I think her post was a very good one. Your question is (don't know the word), not null, just don't know the word. Why would everyone be required to have an IRA or 401K, since now with the current system not all companies or every individual has an IRA or 401K. I think people should have the choice. They can either choose to have a privately run retirement account that they put in and contribute to, or they can have the government run one, which the gvt can steal from and take the money leaving those on it very little money for retirement. I think the privately owned retirement system is the better choice. It give the individuals more choices as to how their money is allocated.
I've see that article, too - Conservative

It was supposed to function like SS does with withholding from your checks, only the private citizen has control over the funds, not the government. You would also have a say-so as to how it is invested if you wanted to do that. There was another component to that idea, whereby someone could still use the SS system if they did not want to be bothered with their funds, and opt out of investing on your own. I think what scares the government so much with this plan, is when people actually see the difference in what they can make on their own to retire with, as opposed to SS and how government severely mismanages those funds, no lucid person would choose to retire on $1200 monthly when they could retired on $8500 monthly. Just a suggestion for you if you are interested in seeing the difference: You can pull up amortization websites or even the government bond site, enter all your information and you can see immediately the difference it would make in your own personal finances. Pretty astounding!
Wall Streeters, bankers and Insurance companies - are drooling over this

One of the reasons that most people study history is to learn from past mistakes. The financial institutions would have to be on good behavior for at least 5 years for the people to forget the fiasco of the Bush administration. Not going to happen.
Yeah, like govt has been aboveboard - with SS funds - speaking of mistakes

I meant to come back and answer this post and then got bogged down with a terrible ESL doc. This poster, though, pretty much sums up what I believe would be a good solution and was exactly what I was going to post.

I didn't want you to think I ran out on a good discussion (which this is). Maybe we could move it back up to the top of the board - it seemed to get lost in the other not-so-much-discussion posts.

Buyer's Remorse. Obama's Approval Rating Collapses.Feb 12, 2013
Well, exactly as I predicted.  The more we know about Obama, the more we know about Obamacare, the more we see how he's going to behave during his second term, the more intrusive into our lives he intends to be, the less respect that he displays for the Constitution or its limits on his power, the less we can comprehend how anyone in their right mind would have ever given this slimeball a second bite of the apple. ...and hence the 12-point swing in his approval rating since the electi ...
