I imagine, as do many, that she will veto this misbegotten bill. After all, we already have the freedom to be idiots. I can't imagine why they would have to pass a law allowing same. Maybe the sincere religious should just bonk all the gays on the head with the bible.

Another perspective - Marilyn

I believe that a business owner should have the freedom to chose who they want to do business with. The only case I am familiar with is the bakery that refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. I suspect that they were not the only bakery in town. Is it possible that this couple selected this bakery, knowing full well that there would be a controversy? I am vaguely remembering something also about a florist. Again, the only florist in town? Just asking.....
A business should be allowed to make some of their own decisions. When does the point come when someone is upset with a business because they aren't open until midnight? Will the government step in and tell them they need to extend their hours for those who work during the day and haven't got time to shop until 11:00 at night? When will the government tell the business that they need to carry something in their store that they don't carry now because it isn't fair to somebody that they don't carry that particular item.....sounds dumb, right? But it's all about freedom.
One store owner wants to practice their freedom of religion and the government steps in and tells them they cannot.
In my personal life, I used to go to a particular grocery store, but they had a good friend of mine arrested for shoplifting (she accidently got a different kind of orange in her bag of oranges when she was picking out oranges from the display) and I chose to never return to that grocery store again and I am free to make that decision.

Freedom of Association - Toni

Thank you, Marilyn! It is about freedom to associate or do business with whomever you please. Before you all jump on the wagon and call me a homophobe, I want to make clear that I think the businesses that are refusing service to gays are cutting their own throats, and if I find such a business in my community, I would refuse to support it even though I'm not gay. People say they want less government interference in their lives who support, yes, government interference, in others' livelihoods are talking out of both sides of their mouths. It's all about who owns you and the means by which you make a living.

This isn't about government 'interference' - it's about discrimination

[ In Reply To ..]
If they passed a bill saying they could refuse YOU service (let's say you are blonde and their 'religion' is opposed to blondes) I think it might be more clear to you WHY this legislation sucks.

It is all about breaching laws that either protect our health, or laws that protect us from discrimination.

I am always AMAZED at the number of people who forget this simply because THEY are not part of the group being targeted for discrimination.

It could be you, next. Therefore the law is defended ANY TIME it is breached.
I agree. It is discrimination. - NPC

Whatever happened to "we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone"? - n/m

I think you can still do that, but just not to a whole - group of people
[ In Reply To ..]
In other words you can say, for example, no shirt, no shoes, no service. because that does not DISCRIMINATE against a particular segment of people.

Or a rowdy customer, etc., one who has passed bad checks, etc.

Again, think of some of your own characteristics and ask yourself if you would want to be refused service because you are: female, white, from New Mexico, born on a Thursday, etc.

SIngling out a SEGMENT of the population IS discrimination and should be against the law in all 50+ states of the United States of America.

[ In Reply To ..]
You can't go to a Kosher restaurant and demand shrimp. You can't go to a vegetarian restaurant and demand chicken. Many Indian restaurants don't serve beef. You can't go to Baskin-Robbins and demand spaghetti.

This isn't about patrons demanding services that are not provided by a business. This is about businesses being allowed to systematically refuse services they provide to the public at large.

Except, perhaps, for the idiot Arizona legislators who seek to use religion as an exclusionary tool. Serving someone pizza isn't engaging in homosexuality. If people cannot tolerate others because they are disgusted or find them sinful, they should not be serving the public.

Caucasians have not been historically underserved in the education department. Historically black colleges and universities were established because 17 states didn't allow blacks to attend. Link is to a scholarship for white males only.

"It's a ridiculous bill," pizzeria manager Evan Stevens told CNN on Friday. "Arizona has much bigger problems than allowing businesses to discriminate against people."

what an embarassment - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I wonder how the business owners will be able to detect how their patrons have sex. If business owners want the option to discriminate on any basis, they can become independent contractors. If they want to enjoy the benefits of operating in a community, they have to play by the rules. Presumably, their religious beliefs allow them to exercise their freedom not to judge.

Maybe they just don't want a blatant showing of sexuality in public. - I agree with that for heterosexuals, too.

[ In Reply To ..]
What ANYONE does in the privacy of their home is their business, and I do not believe any of it should be acceptable in public no matter who is doing it. Maybe that is what they mean and just poorly stated/wrote it. Who knows? However, the public display of sexuality is getting over the top in this country. Is there no decency or shame or self-respect anymore?

Then why specifically address same-sex - couples? nm

gayness doesn't lead to blatant sexuality in public - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Ten percent of the population is gay. I daresay if being gay was the cause of blatant displays of sexuality, we wouldn't be able to go out in public without witnessing some.

I don't think Arizona is exactly opposed to sexuality in public. I believe they have Hooters restaurants like everyone else, and based on the traveling billboard in the link, I don't think they're too worried about blatant sexual displays.
I said maybe... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I didn't state empatically that it was a fact that there is blatant sexuality, etc. I said maybe. Who knows? Maybe there have been problems. I live in a city where there is a HUGE gay community several miles away and it is extremely blatant and in your face! They can do what they want IMO, I'll stay away.
