Sen. Byrd passes away
Posted: Jun 28, 2010
It's about time. Nobody should be able to serve in congress until they're 92. That's just ridiculous.

How rude of you to say that! - SM

It would have been more appropriate to say that Senator Byrd should have retired at an earlier age. It was cold-hearted and downright rude to say "It's about time he died." How would you like someone to say that about your father or grandfather?
Just wait till Cheney passes away, you'll hear that and so much worse... - getagrip

but that will probably be okay with you and you'll be able to justify it somehow.
This is about human compassion, not party affiliation! - gotagrip

Your justification of the original post speaks volumes about your lack of human compassion and common decency. Your assumption that I would wish death on anyone based on their political affiliation also speaks volumes about you.
And these are the same people who come - unglued if you call them

heartless or say they are lacking in compassion. Interesting, isn't it?? And telling, as well!

I didn't say anything about party affiliation. I think someone being in the public arena (which means I'm paying his salary, or the people of WVA are) until that age IS ridiculous. "Regular" folk are forced into retirement in their 50s yet politicians get to stay for life if they are continually voted in. Having politicians wheeled onto the senate floor in gurneys so they can vote (do they even comprehend what they are voting for?) shouldn't be allowed. I'm sure he did do well for West Virginia, it couldn't get much worse.
Ahem. No one forces regular folks to retire. - sm

Its a choice. Just because you become eligible for SS does not mean you have to take it. My sister is 67 and plans to work until she is 70 with the blessings of her hospital coworkers. They would keep her on longer should she ask because they VALUE HER EXPERIENCE. I worked at a place in 2001 that employed an MT who was 87 and had been transcribing for 67 years...36 of which she did via shorthand! We all HAPPILY accommodated her need to split her shift so she could take her 1 hour nap before a leisurely dinner, after which she would return and transcribe until bed time. By the way, her reports never required editing and she was the second highest producer in the company. Other than a short hospital stay when she broke her ankle, she never missed work.
One year at a Christmas party, her son showed up with her. We had never seen her since she worked at home. She was dressed to the nines and was the life of the party. She had a tremor (like Senator Byrd does) in her head and in one leg and was in a wheelchair, but she could still hold her arms and hands straight and still. Why? Because transcribing medical reports required her to do so. Her son cornered the owner of the company and thanked her profusely for "allowing" his mom to continue to work. He told her he believed working was keeping his mom alive by giving her a reason to get up in the morning and providing structure to her day. He also said he knew her work was the reason she had stayed intellectually engaged and had not become senile, and that if she were forced to retire, he believed she would perish. I will never forget that.
In a democracy politicians get to keep their jobs as long as they can get the votes. The gurney wisecrack shows not only a prejudice against elders, but also a contempt for the handicapped and infirm. The answer to your rhetorical question is, "yes, indeed," Senator Byrd knew EXACTLY what he was voting for, as was demonstrated on numerous occasions in the past year or two in news pieces, sound bytes and interviews. Had you bothered to acquaint yourself with his job performance, you could have avoided making yourself look so small. Here is a link to some YouTube clips of Senator Byrd. My favorite is the one where he is playing the fiddle, but you might check out the one where he was DEFENDING HIS AGE.

I for one will not miss him. I would not however - publically rejoice his death!

Don't say things that are so disrespectful about the dead and then you don't have to justify what you say. Leave political affiliation out of it for once. Would not have to tell this to compassionate or feeling people-you would already know.
What exactly is so ridiculous about devoting ones entire life - sm

to public service? West Virginia folks have been sending him back to the Senate over and over again, ever since 1959. He was hospitalized twice in 2008, twice in 2009 and once in 2010 during the decline in his health. That is not a crime, after all. Following each instance, he returned to perform his job. He remained sharp as a tack until the very last moment.
The value of the insight he gained over his years of experience and his evolution from racist conservative to anti-war spokesperson was unparalleled and unmatched. Why on earth should such talent go to waste? You obviously are not old enough to understand that age is just a meaningless number that has nothing whatsoever to do with the measure of human excellence or value.

Who else tried to follow the Constitution so closely?
How many of his colleagues carry a pocket version of the Constitution and refer to it many times if necessary? I'll bet not many.
Thanks for that tidbit and the chuckle. I didnt know that. He definitely - was one of a kind. nm

Sen Byrd - wow
[ In Reply To ..]
Wow, what a cruel thing to say. As far as being in congress until he was 92, apparently the people who thought he was doing a good job kept voting him in. There aren't too many who stay in that long. At least he didn't get voted in, do a couple terms just so he could collect full benefits for the rest of his life. He actually must have believed in what he was doing. Good for him.

NY Board Of Health Passes Soda BanSep 13, 2012What a stupid law. Beginning March 12, the city will prohibit restaurants, mobile food carts, delis and concessions at movie theaters, stadiums or arenas from selling sugary drinks in cups or containers larger than 16 ounces. The city will begin fining sellers for violating the ban in mid-June.
Yet you can buy as many 16 ounce drinks as you want. That's a waste of time and taxpayer money, don't you think?

House Passes Doc Fix Bill TodayMar 26, 2015The House on Thursday overwhelmingly voted to repeal automatic payment cuts to doctors under Medicare, endorsing a rare bipartisan deal that Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) negotiated with Democrats.
