Senate passes historic LGBT right-to-work act (ENDA)

Posted: Nov 8, 2013

Ten GOP Senators crossing the aisle to support civil rights is a lot these days. Of the 32 who voted against, through the entire process in the past days only one stood up to say why. No grandstanding for the electorate on this one.

Speaker of the House Boehner, still in thrall to the deep red wing of his party promises to stop it in the House., although he has enough votes to pass it.

“Anyone who is a student of history knows that our history books are littered with those public figures who said that we just can’t end that discrimination based on race, we can't end that discrimination based on age, based on disability, based on gender,” said Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). “Think about their place in history today, and I won’t recount their names. Speaker Boehner: Think about the party you belong to.”

In the meantime, good for the Senate.

Bleeping Boehner. - I wish I believed in karma.

It wouldn't make the fact that it doesn't really exist any more true, but it might possibly give me a little comfort in situations like this.

He just can't get any points from his people for selfless patriotism - right now. Quite the contrary, and

[ In Reply To ..]
obviously he doesn't feel consoling himself that he did his best for his country would make up for losing his office either.

On the plus side for patriotism being abandoned by those who once claimed it for themselves only, for a long time the far right gave displaying the American flag bad associations--at least in my nice, urbane, diverse neighborhood if you didn't want cool glances and raised eyebrows from the neighbors. I always regretted that but wasn't acquainted with enough of the neighborhood for it to realize just what statement we would be making.

I think I'll go get one. You know the saying about how if there were no God Satan would have to assume his attributes? We need people to stand up FOR our country, not just change the subject when conversation heads the wrong direction at a party. Or think it's perfectly understandable for our leaders to protect their careers at the cost of failing their duty to everyone else.

are you saying you don't believe discrimination - really exists anymore?

[ In Reply To ..]

I said that I don't believe -karma- exists. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
And "any more true" (amount), not "anymore" (time).

I said "Bleeping Boehner" because he's preventing the passage of legislation to help end discrimination, so of course I believe discrimination exists and am upset about -him- denying anything needs to be done about.

Sorry if my somewhat convoluted way of saying things was confusing. I used the nickname box for a continuation of my message, not a moniker-like saying.

to further clarify: -If- I did believe in karma, then I would possibly get some comfort out of the thought that Boehner would eventually get what he deserves for an action such as this one (among others). But I see too many innocent people being shat on and too many schmucks getting away with their misdeeds and/or receiving undeserved rewards for me to actually believe there is any such "universal justice" (i.e., karma), in this life or any other.
If only karma were real. Imagine, people doing unto - themselves what they wish on others. nm

Yep. But there really is no "what goes around comes around" - sm

or "you reap what you sow."  The deck has been stacked, so even if there was some natural tendency toward such balancing to occur, it's not being allowed to.

Which means we can't sit around waiting for the universe to take care of things for us, we have to be PROACTIVE.  And being cognizant of that actually is a comfort, in a different kind of way, even if also realizing that the forces being battled against (the greed mongers, the intolerant, etc.) are nigh overwhelming sometimes.

I so agree. Want a better world? - The ball's in all our courts. nm

Heller (R) Backs ENDA To Ensure Bill Clears Senate But Will Likely Die InNov 04, 2013
Good for Heller:  "It was the right thing to do." Immigration Reform S. 744 Passes SenateJun 27, 2013
Don't think it will pass the House. Border security is NOT first in this bill and Janet Napolitano is the one who will make the decision on whether the border is secure or not...and we all know she thinks it is secure...that's why they never finished the fence. Yet the border agents are saying it's not secure and....well, if it WAS secure, how did 11 Million illegal immigrants cross it? This bill also sets limits on ag workers, lower than what it is now.  BTW, vote was 68-3 ...

Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Passes Senate Procedural VoteDec 18, 2010
WASHINGTON — In a landmark vote for gay rights, the Senate on Saturday voted to advance legislation that would overturn the military ban on openly gay troops known as "don't ask, don't tell." The 63-33 test vote all but guarantees the legislation will pass the Senate, possibly by day's end, and reach the president's desk before the new year. The House had passed an identical version of the bill, 250-174, earlier this week. Repeal would mean that, for the firs ...

Senate Passes Financial Reform BillMay 21, 2010
Hopefully, when the Senate and House blend the bills, it will truly be good for the country. Only time will tell. I noted that 3/4 of the amendments were not introduced or voted on in the Senate. WASHINGTON - Prodded by national anger at Wall Street, the Senate on Thursday passed the most far-reaching restraints on big banks since the Great Depression. In its broad sweep, the massive bill would touch Wall Street CEOs and first-time homebuyers, high-flying traders and small town lenders. T ...

Senate Passes Continuous Resolution Funding Bill Before Leaving Sep 22, 2012

The Sit-in Was Truly HistoricJun 24, 2016
For the first time in US history you there was a group of duly elected representatives who decided to shut down a chamber of congress with unruly behavior. Why did they do it? They want the government to use a list of individuals (which was created in secret, with no judicial review, and without due process) to remove individuals' civil rights as protected by and delineated in the Constitution. When people stood up to the unruly mob the media and the White House framed the issue as ...

Historic ChangeJun 07, 2017
I do not understand how living in a country with its democracy established over 200 years ago, and now, for the first time in history, suddenly we have one of our former presidents set up a group called "Organizing for Action" - (OFA). It goes against our Constitution, our laws, and the processes establishe ...

Hillary's Historic Nomination Isn't A Victory For Women, It's A BetrayalJun 13, 2016
Editor's note: The following column originally appeared in The Washington Times. Hillary Clinton clinching the Democratic Party nomination isn't a victory for women, it's a betrayal. Courtesy of Mrs. Clinton, we are now saddled with something truly historic: the first time an Americ ...

Will SC Judicial Activists Uphold Historic Federal Domain Over Immigration?Apr 23, 2012
The central issue is the Obama administration’s contention that Arizona’s police provisions encroached disruptively on federal terrain. “Arizona has adopted its own immigration policy, which focuses solely on maximum enforcement and pays no heed to the multifaceted judgments” (such as declining to separate children from their parents) that immigration law provides for the executive branch to make.  Will the court allow state and municipal assertion of local biases an ...

Stonewall? Explaining Obama's Historic Gay-Rights Reference. (It Was IllegalJan 23, 2013
Okay, I was 17 when this happened, working the graveyard shift as a waitress in Harrah's Casino. My roommate and I didn't have a TV and her soon-to-be-ex-fiance was still proving, to himself at least, that he wasn't gay by bashing homosexuals every 20 minutes or so. So when President Obama mentioned this all I remembered, vaguely, was him ranting incessantly about this protest, without knowing a single thing about it. From NPR, and the link's to a really interesting story. " ...
