Are you happy with your local elections?

Posted: Nov 7, 2012

My President, Senator, House Rep, State reps elected and amendments all turned out for the best.  Voted down that crazy voter ID and marriage amendment.  I feel like I can breathe and sleep a little easier.

There are a couple that did not go the way I had hoped, but the ones regarding human trafficking, education funding, revision of the 3-strikes law to only include violent crimes and energy funding were passed. :)

YES! Oregon said NO to marijuana. - Here I thought Oregon would have been the first.

[ In Reply To ..]
Then again, just cross over Portland and you are in Vancouver, WA to go ahead and smoke all the pot you want.

Too bad. Better luck next time. By then - perhaps Oregonians will realize

[ In Reply To ..]
the mind-boggling costs of the drug wars, in terms of SENSELESS deaths and violent free-world crimes, further unsupportable expansions of the prison-industrial complex populated by non-violent offenders, and the detrimental effects the $1 trillion dollar debacle that has failed to put a dent in demand, not to mention the potential to offer treatment and rehab for patients addicted to chemical compounds. Along those same lines, they will sit idly by and watch WA and CO cash in on increased tax revenues and marijuana tourism (I'll be one of the first in line for that) and see how other states take more sensible approaches to the question of medical marijuana, which has been documented to be beneficial for such conditions as:

1. Alzheimer's Disease
2. Anorexia
3. AIDS
4. Arthritis
5. Cachexia
6. Cancer
7. Crohn's Disease
8. Epilepsy
9. Glaucoma
10. HIV
11. Migraines
12. Multiple Sclerosis
13. Nausea
14. Chronic pain.
15. Spasticity
16. Wasting Syndrome
17. Diabetic neuropathy.
18. Premenstrual syndrome.
19. Post menopausal syndrome.
20. Depression

IMO, it's criminal NOT to provide access to less costly treatments (as is the nod to GIANT-Pharma) for such devastating, life-altering conditions that can often lead to permanent disabilities and increased costs to support those patients who just might otherwise be able to become more employable, functional and productive.

I agree with you completely - RC

[ In Reply To ..]
Big Pharma can poison people with pharmaceuticals, but God forbid marijuana be used medically.

The war on drugs is an epic failure, and it has cost us too much money.

A "yes" vote here in WA. - My reasoning...

[ In Reply To ..]
People use it now illegally, so why not regulate it like alcohol and cigarettes to generate tax revenue? Plus, hopefully those who could benefit from it medically will have easier access. And, finally, hopefully it helps run most of the illegal growers out of business.

BTW, it may take a while for it to actually become legal. The federal govt still considers it illegal, and federal laws supercede state laws. This could be a big headache for President Obama and the WA State governer to reach a compromise.

Most definitely. H-town voted for an historic 2.7 billion - and can now look forward to

a city transformation that will include new and improved parks with environment- and health-friendly interconnected hike and bike trails, flora beautification and protection for natural preservation pockets across the entirity of our vast sprawl, new and restored school buildings, fire stations, libraries (which took a severe hit after the recession with an alarming number of closures), more job training sites, expansion of our awesome community college system and our efficient public transportation and rail system to accommodate our growth. We are very optimistic and enthusiastic about moving forward through the 21st century and enjoy hands-on involvement while watching our multicultural, cutting-edge hometown thrive and flourish.

Could not be prouder. Community spirit turned out en force with guns-ablazing and Made. It. Happen.

Where's H-town and who's paying for all those transformations? - Truthhurts

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm being serious about this. There are a lot of towns that start with "H."

Will the federal government be paying for this or local government?

Does H-town have enough money in their budget for it or will taxes be going up?

The transformation sounds fantastic but only if it won't cost taxpayers of the town, county, state, or countries taxpayers any extra.

Some are okay with their taxes going up. - RC

[ In Reply To ..]
for the right reasons.

I voted for a temporary raise in taxes in my state to aid in childhood development programs. I think it's worth it, in the long run, and so did my state.
I'm not being mean here but when has there ever been a "temporary" raise in taxes? - backwards typist
[ In Reply To ..]
I've heard the same thing where I live "oh, this will only be temporary for at the most, 5 years," and 10 years later, we're still paying the temporary tax and lo and behold, they just doubled it this year.

It's bad enough that we have to pay taxes for the "privilege of working and breathing" but to double a temporary tax....well, I just can't post the words here. LOL
I'm okay with that, BT - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
If it ends up being a very non-temporary tax, that's okay. I want this state to prosper and I want our kids to grow up knowledgeable. I'm willing to pay extra for that.

Houston Texas and WE are paying for it via tax and - our corps who often step up

to support such efforts as public broadcasting, reforestation, disaster relief and the like. Mayor Anise Parker, a proponent of sustainable/renewable energies, is doing her part by heading up a 38-member delegation on an eight-day trade mission, sponsored by the Houston-based bilateral U.S.-Arab Chamber of Commerce. We have always embraced our diversity here, so this effort is aimed at expanding our city’s international business center role for the energy industry, which she recognizes is in transition from old to new. The intent is also to strengthen the city’s commercial and cultural ties with the Gulf region and promote products, services and technologies to businesses abroad. The delegation is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar. These partnernships were also pursued by Mayors Bill White and Lee Brown, which yielded new direct air service between Houston and the Middle East and the opening of a Qatar Petroleum regional office in Houston....INsourced jobs and big bucks!

Does Anyone Feel This Way About Candidates And Our Elections, US, State Or Local?Sep 23, 2014
Gosh, I cannot understand why they have to spend so much money on elections. The thing is that if these candidates just stated their opinions and were honest with all of us, they'd get elected and re-elected. To me, this is a sick game politics and the whole issue of the problems in our country are not being addressed rationally and with any common sense. I think they need to educate kids on common sense in schools or otherwise we are going to have a bunch of really dumb kids who will repe ...

I haven't been around for a while.  Just popped in today 'cuz I thought there might be some interesting discussion about yesterday's elections.  I am surprised there isn't.  All I can say is goodbye and good riddance to Specter and Lincoln! Hello Rand Paul.  (You need not read anything into that statement; I simply think some new blood is a good thing.)  What do you all think of yesterday's election results?  Looks like there will be a lot o ...

In Regards To The Upcoming Presidential ElectionsJul 23, 2012
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. (1 John 4:1). For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group. (Titus 1:10). and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep. (2 Peter 2:3). Leave them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a ...

Debates Obviously Do Not Decide Elections.Oct 12, 2012
I have not been happy with O's performance the last 4 years.  However, I am not sure he is totally to blame for the state of our economy, debt, and job situation.  The R fully admit that what was dumped in his lap was tremendous.  Much of the debt technically does not even belong to O.  The rest, I believe he had no choice, as we were actually looking at a depression.  As Clinton stated, NO president, R or D, could fix these problems in 4 years. Even though I just ...

"I Don't Want Everybody To Vote. Elections Are Not Won By Jul 25, 2013

Disputed Presidential Elections Are Nearly As Old AsOct 21, 2016
All of this artificial umbrage just because Trump reserves the right to take a look at the election results before saying whether they should be accepted. "Hrumph! And double-hrumph!! By God, the man's unpatriotic! Suggesting that our elections might be rigged! He's insulting democracy!" "Hell - he's deflowering Lady Liberty herself, right in front of the assembled student body!" Is it the press who are so ignorant (and apparently forgetful of very recent American hist ...

Nov 2011 Elections Banner Results For Progressives InNov 09, 2011
Not too shabby.  MI - Over-reaching personhood measure rejected 58% to 42%.  A similar agenda was rejected in Colorado in 2008 and again in 2010.  OH - Senate Bill 5 referendum soundly reversed Kasich's anti-union efforts 63% to 37%.  Impressive numbers. KY - Steve Beshear scored a 60%-30%-%10 margin over GOP and independent opponents.  Dems also won in Secretary of State, Treasurer and Auditor races.  Evidently, Palin's endorsement of the GOP contender ...

Democrats Plan To Win Elections With Illegal Alien VotesMar 03, 2015
The Obama Democrats have an audacious scheme for winning future elections. They just plan to import 5 million non-citizens and credential them as voters who will, in gratitude, vote Democratic. The way this devious formula works is stunningly simple. Just get the new Republican Congress (under Speaker John Boehner and Sen. Mitch McConnell) to pass a full-funding bill for Homeland Security without any exception for the funding of Obama's illegal executive amnesty, which will allow Obama to ...

Conservative Leader Weyrich: "I Don't Want Everybody To Vote...our Leverage In ElectionsNov 06, 2012
Shortly before the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980, Paul Weyrich — a principal architect of today's Republican Party — scolded evangelicals who believed in democracy. "Many of our Christians have what I call the 'goo goo' syndrome — good government," said Weyrich, who co-founded Moral Majority with Jerry Falwell. ( "I don't want everybody to vote. Just one excerpt from this article: FOX NEWS: Utah Republican Mia Love is atop most lists, even if her arrival to Washington took longer than expected. Love’s House race victory makes her the first black female Republican in Congress. “This is historic but it’s not because of the color of my skin,” Love told Fox News on Wednesday. “It’s historic because Utah has decided to elect a person based on their principles.” ...

$20 To A Better Grade, This Is Local To MeNov 11, 2009
Selling candy didn't raise much money last year, so a Goldsboro middle school is selling grades. A $20 donation to Rosewood Middle School will get a student 20 test points - 10 extra points on two tests of the student's choosing. That could raise a B to an A, or a failing grade to a D. Susie Shepherd, the principal, said a parent advisory council came up with the idea, and she endorsed it. She said the council was looking for a new way to raise money.   "Last year they did cho ...

Trump Bad For Local BusinessFeb 20, 2017
For some of the businesses and government agencies that surround President Trump’s “Winter White House,” the effects of his frequent weekend getaways to Mar-a-Lago can best be told in numbers. $200,000 in lost fuel sales at a large local airport in a single four-day visit this month. 75 no-shows at a new restaurant in just one night. $60,000 a day to pay overtime to sheriff’s deputies who guard the many closed roads, a tab that is about $1.5 million over all ...

A Local Family Needs Prayers, Please!Mar 07, 2017
A family in my area needs a lot of prayers right now. A young woman (50) had a brain aneurysm last week and made it through surgery, but the family just received the MRI results that show this woman suffered a devastating brain injury. Things were hopeful as her body had started working on its own so they took her off the paralytics and sedatives, but her brain was terribly injured. The family is going to donate her organs, but said the process of her passing could take several days. Mir ...

Great Post From A Local NewspaperMay 27, 2010
A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost.  She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him,    "Excuse me, can you help me?  I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."     The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above ground elevation of 2,346 feet above sea level. A Pilot Program At Our Local ShelterFeb 27, 2015
A few days ago our volunteer coordinator at our local animal shelter sent out an email informing us of a new program to help the dogs. I wanted to share this with everyone, and maybe if your shelters don't offer it, you could suggest it. The program is called Dog's Day Out. Any volunteer at our shelter who is a dog walker (must show up regularly) and has had at least one year experience at doing so, may now take a dog out of the shelter for an entire day. Is Your Local Newsstation/paper Covering Oct 13, 2016
The election?  If I didn't know better, I wouldn't even know there was anything important going on with the election.  Luckily, I get my news from other sources. But just out of curiosity, I checked my local paper and news station, and not a peep about the WikiLeaks, though a small negative story about Trump was covered.  What about those that use the newspaper as their only source, or believe the 6:00 news is all there is, how will they make an informed decision if they ...

Erin Brokowich Ad Appeals To Nation, Not Local LitigantsJan 24, 2010
Progressive push-back against SCOTUS campaign finance decision is a sight to behold.  The New York law firm prominently visible in the ad wisely chose their notoroius spokesperson to push for environmental law reform while attorneys quietly prosecute personal injury claims in the background. They managed to do this with 15-second cost effectiveness and  hit the ground running with a near instantaneous response to the birth of corporate freedom of speech.   Holy ...

Trump's Florida Trips Hurting Local BusinessesFeb 18, 2017

Local Fast Food Restaurant Paying $15.00. Success StoryOct 30, 2014
There has been a lot of discussion on this board about raising the minimum wage to $15.00 and I have been very vocal about being in favor of this. I have listened to how the prices of everything will go up, they do anyway. Think of gas prices. Just mention the word hurricane or bad weather and even before a hurricane forms they are raising the prices of gas. Just talk about cold weather hitting Florida and orange juice goes through the roof. So they will raise prices regardless. But my main reas ...

HAPPY DAY!Mar 27, 2011
I love to cook!  Always have.  Since I was young I have collected family recipes, changed them around (or not) and have honed my skills to the point where I have earned the title of "family cook".  I can do it all!  I even make homemade cakes and decorate them for family gatherings.  I have index cards, ringed binders and tons and tons of recipes on random pieces of paper put away in boxes. I Was So Happy To See This!Apr 21, 2011
This story is one illustrates why government-controlled health care can be a dangerous thing.  The doctors and the government took choice away from these parents and basically said "sorry, your child is just going to die, no tracheotomy for him."  Religious organization from the US stepped in, brought him down here, US docs did the trach, and now he can spent his last days comfortably at home with his parents. One can only hope that never happens here. ...
