A few days ago our volunteer coordinator at our local animal shelter sent out an email informing us of a new program to help the dogs. I wanted to share this with everyone, and maybe if your shelters don't offer it, you could suggest it.
The program is called Dog's Day Out. Any volunteer at our shelter who is a dog walker (must show up regularly) and has had at least one year experience at doing so, may now take a dog out of the shelter for an entire day. If enough people take advantage of this, and if they rotate dogs, we can make a significant difference in the lives of these wonderful animals. One of our dogs has been patiently waiting for a home for two years. Some do not thrive in the kennel after a prolonged period of time, and they become depressed.
Our dogs are walked 2-3 times per day, and they are so excited to get out. I can just imagine how they will react to this new program. I think it is wonderful! Just had to pass this along!
;I am so happy to hear of this wonderful idea! I'll suggest it to the shelters where I volunteer. Not only is it good exercise for the dogs (and people), it might draw attention to them. If someone comes up and says "What a great dog," the walker can say "He's available for adoption at the local shelter!"
Thank you for posting this!
