I was so happy to see this!

This story is one illustrates why government-controlled health care can be a dangerous thing.  The doctors and the government took choice away from these parents and basically said "sorry, your child is just going to die, no tracheotomy for him."  Religious organization from the US stepped in, brought him down here, US docs did the trach, and now he can spent his last days comfortably at home with his parents.

One can only hope that never happens here.

That is a nice story, but do not think that only happens where there is national healthcare. My friend here in the United States, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. There were no doctors that would accept her case because she has no healthcare insurance. She worked at the hospital and had insurance and was fired because she called in too much with pain. She had been to the doctor several times and nobody could find anything. Finally, after she got fired, they found this cancer, but no doctor would take her because she no longer had insurance. She is now home and in pain all the time but has nobody to take her case because of the financial issue. Please don't indicate that this only happens in places with national healthcare. Patient's are turned down all the time in this country without a national healthcare plan because they can't afford to be treated.

The point was the government and doctors - Indy

overruled the parents in this case and the only time that happens is when the government has the final say. And in this case it was Baby Joseph dies. Over a tracheotomy.

Has your friend checked out any of these options?

The other side of the story.....more accurate - than "Media Matters..."
[ In Reply To ..]
Baby Joseph was given a death sentence by the Candian government and Canadian courts. This article gives their reasoning for not giving the child a tracheostomy. They were proven wrong; the child is breathing on his own and still alive, 4 months later.

His parents wanted to be able to take him home and let him spend whatever days he has left with them. Would you not want that for your child?? The Canadian government and courts decided for them that was not going to be possible. Priests for Life and a US hospital made that possible.

And YES, it COULD happen here. Whenever the government has the last word on care, it can happen ANYWHERE that is the case. God forbid we EVER give that choice to the government!!
The hospital offered a medical transport - on life support

and the family refused. If you go back and read news items before it became a media circus, you'll find out what really happened.
Please post the items you refer to. - Frankly, I tend to believe

the family in this case. Sad that you side with the government and doctors who refused to do a tracheostomy on the child. And they DID refuse. THAT is what happens when the government and doctors get the last choice. His parents wanted the procedure; the docs and government and courts decided the baby was not going to get it. PERIOD. You can end around that all you want, but the fact remains that in life and death decisions under government run health care, it is THEIR decision, NOT YOURS, that takes precedence.

Health Care - s/m

Everyone deserves to be cared for, babies, in-between and elders. I think if I was the women with pancreatic cancer I would have to bring a lawn chair and sit on the front lawn of the Hospital that fired me until they threw me in Jail -- free health care there. Just saying

A lot is being left out of the BJ story - on Fox News

I don't see this as having anything to do with universal healthcare. From what I have read, the doctors did not want to do the procedure because of the risk of infection and the possibility of discomfort for the baby and the fact that the baby is terminally ill.

I have a little experience with a situation where one year ago my dear mother had a ruptured thoracic aortic aneurysm. She made it through eight hours of surgery but had a stroke two days after the procedure. She could not breathe on her own initially and a trach was done. With the trach, she was able to breathe somewhat on her own, but when the trach was removed, she died. It was really an awful situation in that she was on dialysis, had the open wound in her throat, a feeding tube, catheter, and a tube inserted in her rectum to catch the stools. If we had it to do over again, we would have just let nature take its course and not have tried to save her life because there was really no quality of life anymore, and that would have been the loving thing to do.

You are also correct in saying that in the United States people without health insurance are often turned away. It happens all the time.

Claim denied - Sound familiar?

company denies you. If the government is insuring you and they deny you...no recourse. Unless we can find another country to go to like Baby Joseph did.

HAPPY DAY!Mar 27, 2011
I love to cook!  Always have.  Since I was young I have collected family recipes, changed them around (or not) and have honed my skills to the point where I have earned the title of "family cook".  I can do it all!  I even make homemade cakes and decorate them for family gatherings.  I have index cards, ringed binders and tons and tons of recipes on random pieces of paper put away in boxes. A couple of Christmases ago I decided that since times are tough and gifts for o ...

Anyone Happy?Aug 03, 2010
I am still in school, and it seems like everyone on the boards is miserable and there's no future for MT.  Not very much to keep anyone motivated in school.  I still have about 6-9 months left.  Is anyone happy, or at least content in their job?  I am a future WAHM, mother of two sons, ages 7 and 2.  I used to work in social services, and thought I'd do this for a while.  Please give me some hope! ...

Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone. (sm)Nov 26, 2009
I know we often disagree on this board, but I hope that everyone -- liberal, conservative or in between -- has a wonderful, safe and happy Thanksgiving. If you're spending it with your relatives (as you might do every year and sometimes dread doing so), try to look at them in a new light and be grateful you still have your family. If you have no family, cook a meal and invite a neighbor or someone who also has no family to share your meal with you. It might wind up being your best Tha ...

Nebraskans Are Not HappyDec 31, 2009
From Rasmussen... In Nebraska, just 17% approve of the Medicaid deal cut by Senator Ben Nelson to secure his vote on health care reform. Nelson is now down by 30 points in an early look at his 2012 Reelection Bid. Republicans now lead by five points on the Generic Congressional Ballot. That’s a big change from the seven-point lead enjoyed by Democrats when President Obama was inaugurated. Coincidentally, Obama's approval rating has sunk to -16.   One can only hope th ...

Happy TuesdayJul 27, 2010
I drug myself out of bed this morning feeling tired and mad at the world.  Nothing new!  I'm not really a morning person.  I took a shower, felt better.  I opened up the sliding glass door in my bed room and WHOOSH!  A gust of fresh air blew in!  It was cool and smelled green and fresh from the rain last night.  I opened up the other windows and doors throughout the house and the breeze and scent swirling around my house lifted my spirits.  I had a fe ...

Are You Happy With Your Weight?Apr 18, 2013
Just wondering if any woman is ever truly "happy" with her body?  I have always had weight struggles and had gotten very heavy and I lost it all about five years ago.  I was happy, at first, but then it went away.  I am not underweight and am actually at the high end of "normal" weight, but I just cannot be happy about how I look.  I decided I needed to lose 10 more pounds for this summer and worked hard and lost it, but I still look in the mirror and I think I see myself a l ...

July 4 is the birthday of our nation.
