Her column in our local newspaper, “Access to Birth Control Doesn’t Count” really ticked me off. Of course it does!. What I have noticed is that those who yell the loudest about birth control blame the women, especially the poor, if they don’t use birth control and thus, get pregnant.
She stated “…Women who lead disciplined lives would move heaven and earth to manage their fertility…To them, this exclusion in coverage is merely insulting…” I think it’s insulting to think that those who lead disciplined lives need help.
“The concern is women scraping by…high school kids with no income…” How insulting to them!!!! Then to insult them even more, she goes on to blame them if they get pregnant!!! High school kids shouldn’t be having sex but many do. It’s also evident, that the call for parents to approve and pay for their kid’s birth control and many do. Those scraping by have access to birth control but if they don’t get the help, then there’s a problem with the information available.
Even harsher is her statement that “…some are strangers to the larger world of responsibility or lack of mental capacity to make sound decisions.” WHAT??? Lack mental capacity? That statement alone was so insulting, if I wrote how I feel about it, I would definitely be banned from this board.
What she and others like her seem to conveniently forget is that women don’t have sex by themselves. A male partner plays a large part in this matter and should also take responsibility, but according to her, men shouldn’t or don’t, have any responsibility in this matter. You can’t give a pass to the male partner in this matter. Now that’s irresponsible!
