Weird thing - but not in a scary way,

Posted: Jan 29, 2014

Been afraid to even write this down or tell anyone.  Hopefully people here can give me some good explanations of what they think.

Bought a house a couple years ago.  The owner had died and his kids were selling it.  RE lady said he did not die in the house.  We love the house, feel lots of love and comfort here.  Love our nieghbors the street, the area, everything.  Feel very safe and content here.

Now here's the weird things.  Every once in awhile I will see a small shadow out of the corner of my eyes on the floor not far from my desk.  This has happened several times.  Each time I look think one of my cats has walked into the room.  I don't see it anywhere else just this room, but at first I think a cat walks in and is sitting there looking at me.

Second, out of the corner of my eye again I saw a man walk by in the other room (my room opens into a family room).  Thought my husband walked by (I did not look up, just saw him go by).  Then my husband opens the door to his room, so it clearly was not him.

Third, I have seen a lady walk by the kitchen window frame (what used to be a window that looked into the back yard (they built an addiion off of the kitchen so now I'm in the family room).  She had what I thought was kind of grayish hair.  I thought maybe it was a shadow from birds flying by so didn't think anything of it.

Finally last night my husband fell asleep on the couch here in the family room.  I was on my computer typing letters and out of the corner of my eye I saw a figure float by in the kitchen (and I mean floated - as in gliding across the floor).  Went from the sink to the door that leads to the garage.  Then I heard the floor creaking.  Now that really unsettled me.  I didn't feel scared (like scared for my life or felt threatened, just was a bit unnerving).  Couldn't tell me DH because he was snoring away.  LOL  So I sat here and said out loud.  Hello, would you please not mind doing that because you are giving me an uneasy feeling.  Then I sat and talked about how much I loved the house and if they are the owners thanked them and said we would take care of it.  Felt kind of stupid saying this, but felt like I needed to say something "just in case".

Anyone have any explanations.  Figment of my imagination?  Dust falling?  Glare from my glasses and the lights on the wall?  I just don't know what to think.

I have had the same thing with seeing black shadows from the corner of my eyes, sometimes thought it was a cat too, or maybe a mouse. But nothing there of course. Kind of creeped me out too when I was alone. But I looked it up online and found it is probably floaters in my eyes. So I don't pay too much attention to it anymore, though I still have that. I dunno about seeing a figure floating through the air, though. Are you seeing that out of the corner of your eyes or looking straight at it?

A couple of questions - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I grew up in a family that believed in superstition and other worldly event, I favor science and logical explanations, but I keep an open mind. Was the previous owner the only owner? How long after you moved in did disturbances start? Has anyone else seen anything? What is the history of the land your house sits on and the area around it?

I ask about the owners because you said they built on an addition, if it is an older home perhaps something was missed in the ventilation system and you may have carbon monoxide or other gases building up in your home. I ask about the land for the same reason, buried chemicals or an old landfill can also cause dangerous gases. I ask about the duration of time to rule out the other two options. Are there any changes to the house or nearby property that you or your neighbors have made? New heater, fracking? Finally, I don't mean any disrespect, but have you had your eyes checked recently? My aunt has macular degeneration and she sometimes sees a gray shape in the corner of one of her eyes.

These are some of the things you may want to look into. Best of luck.

Was just watching Ghost Hunters... - poorhouse

I agree with the other two posters...keep an open mind, check with neighbors (about the history of the property, how old is the home? Old enough to have info at the historical society?, and having the eye exam couldn't hurt...lol). Find out if Ghost Hunters can come and examine! If you do have ghosts, I hope they're friendly, not disruptive. ;) The creaking floor is interesting; I only hear that in our house when someone walks on it...it never just happens. Good luck!

I'm hoping all it is is floaters. That would be comforting. Maybe reflection of the wall light reflecting off my glasses. I do have an open mind and have watched a lot of things so know anything is possible.

I actually did have an eye exam just a couple weeks ago, so my eyes are fine.

Every time I see something its always out of the corner of my eyes. Never straight on as though I'm looking at them, just movement. The one last night kind of freaked me out because it was out of the corner of my eye and floated (kind of glided) very fast. Like I say, kind of looked like a figure, but again was out of the corner of my vision.

While I believe in ghosts and spirits I too like to find a logical explanation (just is more comforting to me I guess), but I know there are other possibilities out there. I wouldn't say these disturbances happened a certain amount of time after we got here and it's so infrequent I'm not even sure they are disturbances. We've been here bout 1-1/2 years. The little dark thing I keep thinking might be a dog I've seen that dark spot maybe 2, 3 or 4 times. Saw what I thought was my husband walking by (which wasn't him) once, and then just 2 other instances (including the one last night), so it's not like its a regular thing. Nobody has been in the house except us. Our house was built bout 50 years ago and about 5 years after it was built they added on a family room and another bedroom. It was only owned by the family who built it, so we are the second owners. I don't know what happened to the owners wife, but my understanding is after the kids married and moved out the house was too big for the owner to take care of, plus the yard. I don't know what happened to him, sounds like he might have moved to an assisted care place or in with one of his kids. He was a military man and his kids loved the house so much they had a hard time selling, but once they heard we were prior military they said they almost felt comforted as if we were who was meant to be here as a memory of their father's time in the service (if that makes sense).

Definitely going to check into the history of the land. In fact one of the neighbors up the road actually was one of the first people in this neighborhood and he helped the previous owner build the place. Will be worth checking into what was here before the houses were built.

The creaky floor can be unsettling at times. That and the fact that every once in awhile the toilet will flush on its own (though I know that is just a leaky thing that can be fixed. Still is unsettling. Especially the one time I was using it and all of a sudden it flushed. LOL

Like I say I don't feel threatened. I did tell my husband the other night of a couple things. I told him I wondered if there used to be a dog here because I see a shadow every once in awhile. He was telling me he read that people and pets who have passed on are actually in the same world, but just a different dimension (or something like that). Then I told him about seeing someone walk by I thought was him and what I thought was a women in the kitchen area. Think he kind of got a little freaked (gave me a weird look), so I didn't mention it anymore.

Whatever it is if it really is ghosts (am hoping not) they are friendly. Nothing bad or irritating or anything like that. Don't feel threatened.

For the most part I'm hoping it's just a reflection of light on my glasses playing tricks on my eyes, but last night just did creep me out.

Will search for info on the land and what this used to be. Will keep you informed.

Thanks all.

Yup, you have ghosts, but sounds like nice ones - sm

What you are describing sounds like ghosts, including the dog.

Feeling unsettled by it is normal, but you describe a lot of love and comfort in the home. If these were bad entities, believe me that you would be describing something else entirely. If you do not feel threatened, I think you have no reason to be worried.

It may be that you perceive them more easily than your husband. I find it easier to sense them when not looking straight at them. It also may be easier in low light, when it is quiet, etc.

Do your pets seem to see them? Do they act unconcerned or as if they accept them as normal? More reason not to worry.

Do the ghosts repear the same action, like a recording? Like the hologram of Princess Leia? If so, that is thought to be a residual energy imprint. If they do new stuff, then they may just be mom and dad still living in the house. As your husband said, they may be in an intersecting dimension. They don't have solid mass like you do, so they aren't as visible and they can be there with you.

I don't think it is a problem. They are likely to have accepted you. If they hadn't you would know it by now. Don't feel weird talking to them.

Oh my! - Anon

I got chills reading your story! I've never experienced anything like this. I'm pretty much a black and white thinker, but I believe people can see and experience ghost-like things. As another poster said, if these are ghosts, I hope they're friendly. Keep us posted! I'd love to hear more about this.

Several years ago I rented a house, which I eventually loved. However, immediately upon moving in (first night) I began to notice sounds that could not be explained. They were very loud, and when I went to check to see if something fell, everything was fine. One evening as I was making dinner there was a bang so loud in the basement it made me jump. I went down and looked over every inch of the two rooms, and again nothing. It went from sounds to things just constantly being missing. I would purchase items at the store, go to use them and they were gone. I actually bought items and found then opened when I had never used them. (I lived alone). I found out that the man who lived in the house for many years died suddenly in the home. Shortly before I rented the house his wife lay dying in a bedroom on the second floor, and then died in the hospital. In that bedroom one evening I was talking on the phone. All of a sudden a curtin rod that was up for months and tightly secured fell and crashed to the floor. It did not fall straight down, but literally landed on the other side of the room. I literally could not speak. When I moved in I changed everything, painting every room and hanging wallpaper. I thought maybe the changes "upset" the former owner. Nothing that happened was harmful to me, but at times it made me feel I was losing my mind. After a few years everything stopped. When I moved out ten years later the items that went missing previously were never found after everything was removed from the house.

I don't think you have anything to worry about, and I truly think in time all will settle down. Just love your home, and keep talking out loud. I did that, too. Good luck to you and your family!

you have ghosts. I lived with ghosts before. Two kids. My previous husband, when we first met, told me he had aliens in his house. He was addicted to X-Files. Was saying there were two, both small, but one bigger than the other. Thought he was losing his mind until one of them ran by and knocked something off the dryer, which was in his bedroom (very small house). After my son and I moved in with him, it was not long before I started seeing the little one. It would walk float by the bed at night and just float off into the darkness. I would be in a deep sleep and would wake up to see this, but could not move. Not scared, just more or less paralyzed and could not move. One day I was doing dishes in the kitchen and heard my son out in the yard laughing and talking. He was about four. He came in and I asked him who he was talking to and he told me it was the kids, but they couldn't talk because they had something in their mouths (weird). Anyway, there were no kids out there. I would also catch something out of the corner of my eye while sitting in the living room. It would go from the bedroom to the kitchen. These were more or less white shadows. One night while sleeping on my side facing my husband, the small one was standing by the side of the bed next to my husband. I sort of gasped and rolled on my back. My husband asks what's the matter. I said do you get the feeling we are being watched. He said yeah, it is standing right next to the bed. One night we went out and I had a ring on. When we got home, I took the ring off and put it in the top drawer of my jewelry box. It was gone the next day. I was mad and told the ghost to put it back. I had a feeling the little one was a little girl. I said, "Alright little girl, put my ring back, it's not yours." The next day the ring was back in the drawer. I pretty much got used to this and one night I was awakened again, seeing the bigger one for the first time. This time I actually was able to arise onto my elbow and watched the thing go by. I even said, "Wow, there is the big one." I actually told him to go to the light. LOL We were in the middle of a remodeling project in the house and we never saw them again.

I had a friend at work that had a ghost story that was totally different. I was telling her about mine and she said she had them but didn't want to talk about it. She was scared. One day she finally talked to me and oh my, her ghost was trying to kill her. She would wake up with it sitting on her chest and she couldn't breathe. They tried having the house exorcised and ended up moving.

I do believe in ghosts.

My Story - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to have horrible feelings like someone was sitting on my chest. I would see a very dark being, cloaked. It was always when I had woken in the middle of the night and had trouble going back to sleep.

I did some research, and it's called hypnogogia. It's an altered state between being awake and being asleep. I have never believed in ghosts, so I didn't even think of a ghostly being, and I still don't think it was a ghostly being.

It doesn't relate to the OP so much, but it does relate to the person who said they have a friend who thinks she had a ghost sitting on her chest. I, too, couldn't breathe or move. It was soooo real, that if I had been inclined to believe in ghosts, that is exactly what I would have thought.

People's minds go in different directions. I totally don't believe in ghosts, so I never even considered a ghost. I, too, have seen this black-cloaked thing looming over me--it doesn't always sit on my chest, and I haven't had this happen since a major stressor in my life disappeared, and it was always sleep-related, in the middle of the night.

Lived in a house and my son was 4 and he started saying he saw a woman and a little girl there. It terrified my son to the point that he was afraid to be inside the house alone. I really didn't believe in ghosts and thought he was just going through something and actually was thinking of sending him to a psychiatrist, because it was draining with him afraid to even be in a room alone. Then, my stepson, who was 17 spent the night and woke me up at 3 a.m. terrified and he described seeing the exact thing my son was seeing. I started researching, breaking out the white candles, telling them to "Go to God" , you know everything you read, and then I was asleep one night and woke up and saw the same woman my son was describing with her face right in my face and she blew like hot breath right in my face and was staring at me so intently. We MOVED after that.

strong attachment to a certain place, I believe they like to revisit it every so often. When my dad died, he was not only attached to his home, but also to the business he and my mother ran together. He instructed her on how to run it, and left it in her hands when he died. She did a fine job, but every so often she said she saw him in the office checking her work. Also, my brother (who didn't get along with my dad, and wasn't emotionally attached to him like my mom was), saw him walking in the hallway as clear as a bell. It made him jump, because he thought he was really there in flesh and blood. But he wasn't scared, just realized what Mom felt - he was just there checking up on things.

I think communication between beings (both animal and human), and that thing we call ESP, is tied up in the neutrons and electrons that power the spark of life, the thoughts that move through the synapses of our brains, and the nonverbal but still real communication we have with other beings. Animals in particular. Since energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it simply changes form. So I think that energy is communicating with you, and when that communication reaches your consciousness or subconsciousness, it manifests itself in the form of a vision, a feeling, or a sound.

So yes, I think so-called figments or ghosts are not imaginary, but very much normal. Not everyone sees them, because not everyone is as finely tuned in to it. So instead of something to be worried about, I would consider what you experience to be a gift.

Something similar happened to me - momt

When I lived alone for the first time after high school. I would hear noises from another room like glass objects falling over or hitting each other, but nothing was moved and no one was there but me. One night during a storm lightning struck a phone line a few feet from my bed and there was a big black streak up the wall from the outlet. I was very afraid for several months until I talked to someone about it at church. They suggested getting some olive oil and applying a drop of it to the windows and doors around the house while praying over each entry point that a spirit might enter. I was about 20 at the time and very fearful over all the noises. But after using the oil all of the strange sounds stopped and I was never bothered again.

in this old flat I had rented. At the time, I had just gotten out of school and could not afford very much. Anyway, there was a place in the living room that was always cold, no matter how high we turned the heat. The rest of the room could be toasty hot and that spot was still cold! One day a friend of mine, a priest (Anglican - she was a woman) came over for tea and she said "You have a ghost in here." I said to the ghost, "As long as you do not hurt anybody in this flat, you are welcome to stay; just leave us alone and we will leave you alone." And so it went for three years until we were able to afford something better. Friends who came over also said they could feel something strange. The ghost never harmed us, but the cold spot was weird.

Saw my grandfather in a white mist form leave his bedroom, stand in front of my bed and then kind of "float" through the doorway through the kitchen and vanish. Not scary, kind of cool. Then lived in a house that was a party house before we bought it. Was told that a kid overdosed in the backyard. Would see someone quickly walk by the door way and down the hallway. Didn't think much about it until my daughter asked me if I ever saw anything like that. Just recently one my dogs disappeared. We live in the mountains and they run freely around the acreage. Anyway, she always would come back but one day just did not. I miss her terribly. A few weeks after she went missing I was napping on the sofa and I felt her come up next to me and whimper and paw at me like she would do when she wanted to go outside. It woke me up and reached for her to pat her on the head and then realized she wasn't there. I think she was saying goodbye to me.
