All right, women! Back in your binders.

How about those condescending statements about women having to be home to make dinner?  This guy is a dinosaur.

;

Wow...talk about taken out of context - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
He was talking about one particular woman who said she needed to be home for her kids and to fix dinner. Perhaps you should be asking why Obama has less woman working in the WH than Bush did? Obama never specifically answered anything he would do for women and that group...as well as black people....are the 2 groups that have been hit the hardest by unemployment.

WH staff - me

So in other words, you're saying that Bush had more slaves in the White House to wait on him hand and foot.

Oh, please. Obama's FIRST act was - equal pay for women.

[ In Reply To ..]
His record speak for itself on this issue, as does Lily Ledbetter. What did we learn about Mitt's views on equal pay? That he looked at women in binders? Mitt never even addressed the issue. He danced around it. He tried to fake his way through his 2 minutes but failed to float the bull. Obama successfully expanded on work conditions conducive to the success of women in the workplace

then why are we, as women, only getting peanuts for pay? - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
women are primarily the MT standard in this business. We don't get "equal pay". Our equal pay is to be "equal with India" and his homeland women. He wants American women back in the kitchen, pregnant and barefoot, while his women in India are progressive and making a decent living for their "men."
Might want to check into GOP voting record on these measures - for your answer

Let's back up just a minute. Before Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, there was the Equal Rights Amendment that simple gives Congress the power to enforce the simple proposition that women are equal under the law. IT IS YET TO BE RATIFIED. Go trace the vote history on that one to see why. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was voted down in 2007 during the 110th Congress. Guess by whom?

The current version only addresses the statue of limitations on filing pay discrimination lawsuits, not the overall problem of equal pay. The fact that he signed it into law more than adequately addresses the question posed in the debate about where he stands on equal pay for women. He obviously supports it.

President Obama also supports and advocates on behalf of the Paycheck Fairness Act, which provides more effective remedies for pay discrimination by beefing up the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 and the Equal Pay Act of 1963. Some of those remedies allow women to share wage and salary information (where currently employers are allowed to prohibit such disclosures); employers would be required to show that any "bona fide" pay disparities are not based on gender; prohibit employers from retaliating against women who raise these issues; provide women the means to negotiate their pay.

It passed the House in 2009. Guess what happened in 2010 in the Senate? Hint: The president and Senate democrats support this measure. Can you say filibuster?

There goes the liberals thinking with - sm

their lady parts instead of their brain. More often than not...it is the women who fix the dinner. Yes, there are exceptions to this. I know I cook dinner in my household. If you are a single mom who works, you are obviously doing the cooking because nobody has any cooking fairies to do it for 'em. What is so wrong with him saying he had a lady who worked for him who had to be home by 5 to be with her kids and cook dinner. Not one darn thing!

And if that same woman had wanted equal pay - and opportunity? sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The problem is that he talks like this is the sum total of women's problems in the workplace. Out. Of. Touch.

Don't be disingenuous.

I don't believe he was being disingenuous. - sm

How many women have kids they have to get home to? I'd say most of working women do. Getting out of work at a reasonable time to be home with kids is a big deal to a lot of women out in the workforce. The only reason I have the job I have now is so I can be at home with my kids, clean our house and make dinner for them and my husband. I know my life revolves around my kids. I work 3rd shift hours so I don't miss any of their sporting stuff and school activities. I don't want to work 3rd shift...but I am. That is reality for a lot of women and to say someone is from the stone ages or is a dinosaur because he acknowledges that he knew a woman who worked for him that wanted to be home by 5 for her kids and to make dinner...wow. So you dislike him saying that work places need to be more flexible for women so they can do that. OMG...how horrible to suggest such a thing. Romney is a barbarian.

I seriously wonder about some of you on here. Good grief!
The disingenuous comment wasn't directed at Romney - sm

...it was directed at the posters in this thread. And it still applies.
If women made the same as men, they could afford nannies - to watch the kids til they got home from work.

Not only that, but if women lose their reproductive rights, - then OF COURSE they'll be less-desirable hire
[ In Reply To ..]
i think a lot of women who are going to vote for this throwback to the dark ages dont realize that it wouldnt take much to send our daughters and granddaughters back to the days of being kept "barefoot & pregnant", so to speak. Or to back-alley coat-hanger abortions.

"Being home with the kids" is also something we at-home workers sort of brought upon ourselves, by perpetuating the myth that this is the sole reason anyone would want to work at home. (The whole idea of more productive time, less time wasted on commuting, less gasoline used, less cost in housing those workers in a brick-and-mortar building), seems to have magically vanished, and instead, employers used at-home workers' physical absence from the office to pay them less. The employer was ALREADY getting a helluva deal by having an at-home workforce. But no, they were greedy, and the lure of even more money in the form of tax-breaks for sending it offshore, was more than they could resist.

If these people had their way (and they just MIGHT... we'll have to wait and see), women will once again be booted out of the office and sent out to the broodmare pasture.
If this happens, I'll give you my entire savings. - Crazy.

[ In Reply To ..]
I heard that remark last night and wondered who would be the first to jump on it.

The fact is that historically women have been the people in the household to take care of the children. When you add to that that most single-parent households with children are headed up by women, it's perfectly reasonable to make a comment such as the one he made.

Face it, if Obama had made that binder comment - You would be on here

That's a ridiculously presumptuous thing to say. You must have me confused with someone who plays party politics.

In fact, I thought what Obama had to say about women was pretty okay last night.

...that attitude is so 1962. Today's women are increasingly the breadwinners for their families. They are equal partners both domestic and on the work front. Just because Mrs. Romney had the luxery to be a housewife doesn't mean it exists for much of the US of A. My husband takes equal parts in being here for the children and cooking dinner.

Quick google search of statistics.... - SK1

[ In Reply To ..]

There's nothing 1962 about the fact that there are millions of single parent families, the majority of which are headed by women. (Emphasis in red mine.)

Every story is different, but when you examine the figures, actual single parent statistics may surprise you. According to Custodial Mothers and Fathers and Their Child Support: 2007, released by the U.S. Census Bureau in November, 2009, there are approximately 13.7 million single parents in the United States today, and those parents are responsible for raising 21.8 million children (approximately 26% of children under 21 in the U.S. today).

However, the majority of individuals raising children alone started out in committed relationships and never expected to be single parents. According to the U.S. Census Bureau...

The Typical Single Parent is a Mother:

  • Approximately 84% of custodial parents are mothers, and

  • 16% of custodial parents are fathers

I wasn't speaking of single-parent homes. I was speaking of married couples where the wife is the breadwinner.

Either way, though, there are single fathers out there raising kids and the comments made by Mr. Romney weren't directed towards them, only mothers, which by today's standards, really is outdated.
They were discussing women's issues.... - SK1
[ In Reply To ..]
And the fact remains that the VAST majority of single parent households are held by women.

And as for women being the major breadwinners in a two-parent household, then the issue doesn't really apply to them anyway.... unless, of course, they're still the one taking the primary caretaking role for the children (which is oft the case).
My point... - XMT
[ In Reply To ..]
That was kind of my point...its not justa woman's issue..its a family and society issue. While women head the majority of single-parent families, single-parent families with only a father DO exist. Is it not an issue because they make more and because of how society views single-parent families as being mostly a womens issue? Its a good old fashion double standard.

Older Women Versus Younger Women And Trump/ClintonOct 10, 2016
Women who "like" Trump are invariably older and don't like Hilary Clinton because they were raised in an era of economic competition with each for men. Young women can take care of themselves economically so aren't as threatened by other women so they're more apt to go for HIllary. Older women also don't like Clinton because she stuck with her ...
