Kinda like the You-Didn't-Build-That R-camp ad with - small business recipients of federal bucks,

bitterly complaining about how insulted they were over what President Obama didn't say. As I recall, there were at least 4 or 5 of them, between the ad that aired nationwide and the California roundtable internet ads.

I have to hand it to Romney. He found some impressive actors, who were darned good at lyin' their backsides off while looking straight into the camera. Don't you agree?

Oh, I almost forgot. After being busted for false advertising, - the GOP decided to do the same thing

in front of a much larger audience at the RNC. Seems Sher Venzuela, featured "We Did Build That" speaker, received roughly $17 million in federal loans and contracts when she opened her Delaware upholstry business. She also openly encourages other business owners to rely on taxpayer funding for start-up. Seems downright giddy over the programs, since she now has 40 employees and pulls in millions in annual revenues. In a presentation to a group of women entrepreneurs conference, she wrote: "But where do I start?...With your BIGGEST secret weapon!...You start with the no cost/low-cost resources that you, the taxpayer, have already paid for!"

Ms Venezuela sure is a happy camper. So here's a republican woman who really DOES support Obama administration small business policies, and that's no lie! Thanks, Mitt, for bringing that to our attention.

1. Her name is Sher Valenzuela.

2. She started her business in the 1990s, when either Clinton of Bush I were in office. It had nothing to do with Obama's administration.

3. If the money was a LOAN, it was paid back. It was not a handout. No harm, no foul.

ETA: Small business loans have been available through the SBA since 1953, when Dwight Eisenhower (a Republican) was president. Before that, other programs were also available.

Please note, the women's conference where she promoted using your "BIGGEST secret weapon" was held earlier this year. By my read, that would mean she hasn't changed her mind about the great benefits of government small business programs in 2012.

You are correct that she started her business with $2 million in federal help. There was a $20,000 SBA-backed loan and another $1.8 million in government-backed funding to build her firm's 66,000 square-foot facility. Over Bush and OBAMA years, she's received an addition $15 million in federal CONTRACTS since 2001, receiving at least $1.5 million each year between 2006 and 2011, according to government data.

I'd say that qualifies as "help." I do not see any special significance in your statement that these loans were paid back. One would hope these guys would not add loan default to their deceptive claims they didn't have help.

Not convinced? OK. How 'bout this? Romney organized 24 “We Did Build This” events in the battleground states of AP, WI, VA, OH, IA, FL, MO, NC, MI, NH, NM and NV where local business owners talked about how self-sufficient they are and how government is HINDERING THEIR GROWTH! Do you think this is a fair statement? I don't.

Don't get me wrong. I think it's GREAT these guys are getting help. What's not so great is their willingness to lie about it for political gain in support of a candidate that lied in the first place about the whole you-didn't-build-that thing which, BTW, earned Romney a "false" rating from Politifact. I'm sorry, the theme they are promoting is a total SHAM. I find the repetitive pattern of the deception disturbing.

So, let's take a peek at how much the govt is holding them back. BTW, this list doesn't include the others I referred to in the previous post who were featured in the TV and internet ads, most of whom got substantially more help than the following businesses (along the same lines as Ms. Valenzuela). My personal faves are #7 and #13.

1. Ball Office Products hosted the “We Did Build This” event in Richmond, VA. The company received a loan of $635,000 through the Small Business Administration in 2012, according to USASpending.gov. The company was also awarded a lucrative $52,525 contract with the General Services Administration just a year after its founding.

2. Midwest Tape, a media distributor of Holland, Ohio, was showcased at a local event and has been contracted by the Department of Defense since 2008, earning a cumulative $13,659.

3. Columbus Truck and Equipment was featured in a neighboring event and has received $6,643 in contracts with the Department of Defense.

4. Cranston Material Handling Equipment Corporation, the owner of which spoke Wednesday morning at a campaign event in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, has reaped a total of $61,729 in contracts with the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs since 2007.

5. Systems Engineering Co. The owner of Systems Engineering has received a total of $180,200 in DOD contracts, as recently as last year.

6. Brady Industries in Las Vegas has received $54,425 in contracts with Veterans Affairs since 2009.

7. Pennsylvania business PRL Industries Inc. received a $167,847 contract through the Department of Homeland Security for ship and boat propulsion components for the U.S. Coast Guard in August 2008. Janis Herschkowitz, who spoke on behalf of PRL, Inc. used to be a director of the National Consumer Cooperative Bank, which, defined in Herschkowitz’ own words, was created by Congress “to meet personal, social or business needs, especially in low- and moderate-income communities by forming cooperatives.”

8. An Iowa event featured Competitive Edge, Inc. which was contracted by Veterans Affairs for $3,543 to make informational refrigerator magnets.

9. J & W Cycles of Missouri was awarded $25,808 in contracts from the DOD and Department of Interior.
Total Resource, featured in a Sparks, Nevada campaign event, has been a federal contractor since 2010, and received a $11,200 contract from the DOD in 2009.

10. Applegate Insulation, which hosted one of the events in Michigan, benefited from an energy saving federal tax credit worth 30 percent of the installation project, up to $1,500.

11. Home Instead Senior Care supported Romney in Roanoke, Virginia, even though home health care companies receive 75 percent of their funding from public programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

12. Home Instead franchises in Virginia have received at least $3,613,549 in federal funding through the Department of Veterans Affairs since 2008. Chris Head, who represented Home Instead at the event, has previously lamented the low Medicaid reimbursement rates in Virginia and told the Roanoke Times that he wished state funding had helped save the now-defunct local Mill Mountain Theatre.

13. Ed Nagle of Nagle Trucking in Ohio also took issue with Obama’s speech, which mentioned roads and bridges as examples of essential government support. But less than a year ago, Nagle protested an idea to privatize the Ohio Turnpike, noting that the privatized Indiana toll road “has diminished in its quality and it’s become a lot more expensive.”

Giving credit where credit is due... - SK

Your post is cut and pasted from the article written by Aviva Shen for the Think Progress website.

Now that credit has been given for the information cited.....

The same that I said before applies here. Either the money received was from a LOAN (not a grant, not a gift) or a CONTRACT, jobs on which they bid and were awarded based on their bids, no different than it would have been had it been a contract with a private enterprise (other than the probability that they were OVERpaid for the job -- which the federal government is notorious for doing).

The fact that the money is available for small businesses is a wonderful thing -- but it's a practice that's been in place for so many years I don't think any one administration can take credit for it nor should any American be ashamed to utilize. It is, after all, a LOAN program, designed to encourage free enterprise in our country, and one for which they must apply and be approved... and ultimately pay back.... with interest.

It's one of the privileges of being an American, but it's not a handout.
Love your clarity and fan-blowing of the Democrat - smoke and mirrors

Would much rather see someone get a loan they pay back, than the selective bail-outs and business take-overs Obama famous for of businesses only OBAMA thinks is worthy.

of the link wars of recent days past. IMO, credit should be given every time to text AND idea sources, the same way that is required in academic and professional writing....especially since it is not uncommon for me to summarize articles I have read and add my own commentary to the abbreviated context.

Until recently, I never failed to do just that and I have spent much time beating my head up against brick walls many, many times over this very issue (I've been posting here since 2007), despite the fact that when I (and others who) do source posts, are often derided, called names (elite, the wordy one, know-it-all just off the top if my head...there have been many more), dismissed, stalked, and piled upon.

Certain partisans get downright hostile when asked to post a source, so one day in the middle of a anti-lib gang rave, an all-caps MODERATOR ALERT showed up imploring outside intervention on the subject. The instruction was some do, some don't, it's not required, ergo, it's no biggie. I was disappointed in that outcome, to say the least, but ever since then I've been going with THAT flow. I mean, why bother if it's going to cause THAT much of a headache?

I understand perfectly well the difference between a loan, credit, grants and gifts and what constitutes the terms of a contract. What I find odd about your reasoning is that you think it's important to give credit for a literary source, but fine by you if monetary sources are not only denied, they are DISCREDITED.

I never said these vehicles are "handouts." In fact, I never use that term because I find it perjorative and mildly distasteful. Just like you think literary sources should be provided, I prefer the formal terms used above, not partisan buzz words. No matter how you slice it, federal funding is HELP, so I stand behind my contention that it is disingenuous to portray it any other way, especially when it's done behind taking a sound bite out of context, distorting it to the extent that it no longer accurately represents the intended message, and working it up into a campaign theme sham. It's intellectually dishonest, the same way you seem to think a missing source is. It's odd to me you can distinguish one, but not the other.

BTW, these are all my own words, so I am the source of this post.
A fine distinction.... - SK
[ In Reply To ..]
There is an huge and obvious distinction between "You didn't build that" and "You built that with assistance." And a business owner acknowledging that they built their business with assistance (from anyone) does not negate their individual effort in making that business happen. Nor does it make them hypocritical for taking credit for their business if they received federal assistance. Had they defaulted on their loans, the government wouldn't have said, "Well, since you didn't build it anyway, you're not responsible for the debt." they could, of course, file for bankruptcy, but that takes it into a different arena, and since I'm not familiar with bankruptcy laws, I won't even attempt to speak to it.

I don't blame business owners for taking umbrage with the "you didn't build that" statement and I, personally, think it's sad that anyone would try to minimize Ms. Valenzuela's (or any other business owner's) achievement. I would feel that way no matter which political party she belonged to or which side was touting it as hypocritical. I simply don't see it as such.
The same distinction was made by President Obama - in that speech
[ In Reply To ..]
SK, I'm not into parsing word salad. It's an exercise that takes focus off the overall message that was being conveyed, that being the virtues of team efforts, the awesome accomplishments that can be achieved when Americans work together for the advancement of the country and the role government has played in the making the country. The reference was made to government-funded infrastructure, AND the individual contribution made by parents, teachers, mentors, etc. It was never meant to besmirch small business nor was it intended to minimize individual initiatives. Quite the contrary. I didn't say that. Neither did Obama.

The facts I provided were not meant to accuse the business owners of hypocrisy. They are facts that I think support my premise. What I take exception to is the way the campaign manipulated the message AND the actors in those ads and at those events....and actors they were, using scripted dialog and portraying a role, as in not real.

You and I agree that there is no shame in taking assistance from the government. My beef is with the campaign, candidate, and the DISHONESTY. If you take umbrage with "You Didn't Build That," then kindly give its source the credit due. That was not Obama's message. It's Romney's invention, and one he's milking for all it's worth.

When you are prepared to discuss the entire context of the statement, I'm game.
