Greatest Fear of Women Over 50

Posted: May 17, 2011

After reading this article, I realized that the greatest fear of American women is the same thing women fear all over the world, running out of money in their old age. This is a good article. It made me think.

Very true. I worry about money (that I don't have!) - every minute of every day. sm

We not only make less than men, are taken less seriously in the workplace, and less likely to be hired back as we age, but we also tend to outlive men most of the time. A double whammy.

The list of things to do was sound advice. Unfortunately, there needs to be a whole 'nother list of ideas for medical transcriptionists, because most of us are too poor to be able to take much of that advice:

Not living beyond your means: I haven't done that in years, most likely because I haven't even been able to live AT my means for years. I scrape by cashing in soda cans, looking for freebies, and taking any handouts offered by friends and family.

Saving money: Haven't been able to do that since I started working for crumbs-per-line at an MTSO. I have an old, very old, 401K, but it's pretty small because it hasn't been funded in years. The only reason it's even still there is because I haven't been able to get my hands on it to tap into it, like I've already done to my former savings account.

Not funding adult children: I hope my mom doesn't read that one, because she's still helping me out every now and then, and I'm in my 60s! :(

Staying healthy: Again, not easy to do on an MTs salary. I never ate real healthy to begin with, but these days I eat so much junk that even I notice it. Ever notice how all the stuff that's healthy for you is prohibitively expensive? I sure wish some national study would find Top Ramen, tortillas and mac'n'cheese to be "healthy", because that's all I'm eating anymore. And homemade mac'n'cheese is out, because real cheese is so expensive.

Regarding health insurance, even with it, I still can't afford to take proper care of my health. The co-payments and deductibles have gone through the roof, and the insurance pays for less and less. Same goes for the dentist.

It says not to tap into your home equity, but that's no problem. I don't own a home, never will, I guess. Still, the rent is just as much of a problem. This month, I spent most of next month's rent on my phone, power and insurance bills, which just keep going up and up, even though I never call out on the phone, just receive incoming calls, have never made a car or renter's insurance claim, and I use so little power that PG&E once called me to ask if there was a problem!

Excellent message. You made me think. - nm

Bag ladies - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I have been worried that I will be a bag lady most of my life. I was finally almost at the point where I thought I had retirement covered, and the Republicans want to pull the rug out from under me. There is no way I can keep working until I am 70--my body is shot from hard work and I mentally can't take the stress any more.

Sometimes I wonder if we are becoming like 3rd-world countries - where people are not respected

[ In Reply To ..]
I wonder if we are very rapidly becoming like 3rd-world countries where the only people respected are the powerful rich. That's what scares me when I see extra subsidies given to the powerful and rich, while at the same time we want to kick the poor, disabled, and helpless while they are down. We never used to be like that. That scares me. Then something good happens, people vote to help the elderly, those in need, and I have hope again. I have strong faith in God. If I didn't, I would be completely and totally hopeless, because I have come to realize that we cannot depend on the stock market with its ups and downs, crashes, forecast for more crashes (while the rich get to invest in IPOs before the regular folk do, have their hedge funds, etc.), can't put our total faith in our country either. The rich can't put all their faith in their money and power, because, as we see every day in the news, that falls apart too. Well, back to my 3rd-world country idea. We may be on our way there.

If you are talking about Medicare, the - Republicans do not want

[ In Reply To ..]
to pull the rug out from under you any more than Obama does...part of paying for Obamacare is coming from Medicare cuts. Research it. What Ryan proposed was making changes so that people under age 55 could make a decision not to keep their money in the public SS. Which is probably a good idea, to stop Democrats from being able to steal it, which is why Social Security is in such trouble. That money was never supposed to be touched, was in a "trust" fund. Until Democratically controlled congress passed the law to be able to raid it to pay for "other" social programs...were supposed to pay it back, never did, just kept borrowing from it. And they want to point at the other side and blame them.

Which is why I HATE political parties. They are divisive and destructive. Just take a look at this board.

Do a fact check on Republicans raiding SS - nm

Do a fact check on who had control when - the law was passed to
[ In Reply To ..]
allow it to be done in the first place.

Ryan wants to dismantle Medicare and I am against that - Leave Medicare Alone!

[ In Reply To ..]
Many people will lose everything if they make Medicare private, because private companies won't insure those who are old or sick. Medicare does. It will be an out-and-out disaster if Ryan's plan is put in effect. You'll see the elderly losing their homes or going hungry to be able to pay medical bills, and still not be able to pay them.

Older Women Versus Younger Women And Trump/ClintonOct 10, 2016
Women who "like" Trump are invariably older and don't like Hilary Clinton because they were raised in an era of economic competition with each for men. In the old days, men generally took care of their women, and some women lucked out with good men and some stuck it out with bad ones. Young women can take care of themselves economically so aren't as threatened by other women so they're more apt to go for HIllary. Older women also don't like Clinton because she stuck with her ...

LDB's Biggest FearJul 07, 2011
If you will recall, Ms. Burdick's greatest fear was "common sense being lost."  That's exactly what happened.  I just heard a woman who was protesting outside the courthouse and she summed up what I feel completely.  She said that jurors should be instructed strongly on using common sense, and not just looking for reasonable doubt.  I know this was mentioned during closing arguments, but it went out the window.  I feel this jury failed us.  If common ...

Anyone In Fear About Debt?Jun 08, 2010
I have been a transcriptionist for 16 years and am back in school full time to get a degree in social work.  I'm shooting for an MSW.  My husband makes roughly 2400 a month.  I have just over 4000 in savings to supplement.  Individually, we are each 25k in debt.  This doesn't include the school loans I will be accumulating in the next few years to achieve my degree.  We also have roughly 1600 dollars a month living expenses (utilities, mortgage, phone, sew ...

Leaderless and lacking a strategy, top party officials worry they're not ready for Trump's first 100 days. As Donald Trump’s inauguration draws near, Democrats fear they remain woefully unprepared to fight the new president’s agenda. People In Nursing Homes Have The Most To Fear From Ryan's PlanApr 14, 2011
Those in nursing homes have the most to fear from Paul Ryan's plan, but their families will have to try to support them. That means they will give up (1) retirement funds including 401Ks, IRAs, (2) college funds , (3) homes (4) plans for the future. This is a cruel plan.
