Military and NDP says he will respond protesters demands. Speculative reports from them, high level officials and NBC news say he may step down. then again, could be another crackdown announcement in advance of planned 3rd Friday demonstations. Maybe. Maybe not. Stay tuned.

of more than 1000 protesters, human rights reports disputing official state disclosure of 15 deaths that place the figure well over 300, and millions of workers officially joining the protests that included the potential for Suez Canal shut-down, the miltary appears to have done a 180. Guess they were neutral initially, then were against the people before they were for for them, but not until they had engaged in tactics that mirror those of the much hated state police, some of whom it turns out were trained in the US (surprise surprise).

Reports say that Mubarak was NOT present at meetings prior to todays announcement from the military and NDP that they would "protect protesters" and arrange for the dictator's departure. This is beginning to look like a victory on the part of the movement to force a military coup. Amazing.

Links below show evidence supporting the FBI training claims. Of note, the Quantico Sentry facility in Virginia is where Private Bradley Manning is being held in solitary confinement, the guy whose alleged connections to WikiLeaks Assange have yet to be substantiated.

It would be interesting to read responses from those below who so vociferously defended these practices in the thread about Bush and his cancellation of the Geneva trip under the spetcre of the possibility of being tried for war crimes. Evidence is emerging that these tactics were turned against pro-democracy protesters by the thousands.

Along these same lines, I find it very difficult to believe how casually Americans, who have enjoyed the freedoms under a democratic system for centuries, can so casually discredit the importance of preserving human rights in view of how much the Egyptians have been willing to sacrifice to gain what some Americans so obviously take for granted. I also find it sadly ironic to realize that many of them were subjected to such abuses as an indirect result of US training in so-called interrogation tactics.

I cannot imagine anything more enraging than for him to call himself the father of Egypt and to claim his heart was aching for the parents and families of the martyred casualties. By my read, he was deliberately defiant and intent on creating the rage we will see unfolding between now and the inevitable fall of this delusional dictator. He essentially called his own people foreigners, another unforgiveable insult. Creating rage justifies crackdown, a failed tactic he may try repeating.

I believe the army was doing one of two things this morning when they made their announcement. Either they were manufacturing an elaborate distraction which later became protracted over 6 hours to enable them to secure the State TV building (which was evacuated earlier) and the presidential palace, both of which are now surrounded by tanks and razor barb wire. This would imply they knew what was coming and that they basically set out to deceive the people, who should justifiably feel deeply betrayed by their military. If they lose faith in their military, the dynamics will turn on a dime. You do the math on what will happen next in that unfortunate aftermath.

A less likely scenario would be that the military were attempting to force Mubaraks hand by issuing the statement and raising the peoples expectations in such as way as to force Mubaraks resignation as a first step in a so-called soft coup. If this were the case, they obviously have failed in that effort.

What will happen is that even larger numbers people will pour into the streets tomorrow, the workers will continue their strikes, including the Suez Canal workers who have signed on to the cause. That one possible event (interruption of operations or closure of the canal) would likely step up more direct multilateral international involvement and response. Another Suez Canal crisis cannot be resolved in the same fashion as it was in the 1956 when Israel intervened...not in this current political climate. Perhaps democracy is not a strong enough force to unite allies, but hit them in the pocketbook by theatening to log jam oil exports from the region and get set for a completely new ball game.
