AJE: Mubarak has resigned as head of ruling NDP

Posted: Feb 5, 2011

including his son, Gamal.  This is viewed as another red herring appeasement by Egyptians as he has not resigned as president and the NDP is notoriously corrupt, meaning nothing is keeping them from replacing old corrupt leaders with new corrupt leaders, as was the case with the appointment of Suleiman as VP.   Nonetheless, this is at least a symbolic baby step in the right direction, behind more substantial reforms, to include the establishment of a transitional government, drafting a new constitution, democratic reform, elections, the replacement of parliament, etc, yet to be addressed.   It may prove interesting to see who is willing to replace the outgoing NDP command, given the party has been thorougly discedited over such a long period of time.  Bet there will be no rush to fill those shoes.

that when Iran had protestors against its dictator, Ahmadinejad, and wanted fair elections for true democracy...our president stood back and kept his nose out of the situation as much as possible. Here Ahmadinejad is NOT our ally and yet I don't recall Obama calling for him to step down.

Now we have Mubarak in Egypt who, although he is a dictator, he not only upheld peace with Israel (OUR ALLY) but also worked with the US. However, Obama has pretty much come out and said Mubarak should step down because of these protestors when there is a possibility that the Muslim Brotherhood could get control of Egypt and end peace with Israel.

I also find it interesting that Ahmadinejad is praising the protestors in Egypt and encouraging their pursuit of democracy against their dictator and yet he violently retaliated against the protestors in his own country who called for him to step down.

Things that make you go "hmmm."

I think that Ahmadinejad is very fearful....sm - oldtimer

right now that the democracy protests in Egypt will reignite the movement in his own country.

the mere suggestion, let alone expectation, that a one-size-fits-all US foreign policy response is in any way feasible. Lets see here. Iran is an Islamic theocracy against whom the US has imposed impotent sanctions for more than 3 decades in an effort to undermine the current regime. One might conclude that the US has been engaged in a sort of cold war with Iran since that time. The Iranian regime has long been an exporter of Islamic revolution in the region and has openly shown its capacity to be supportive of global Jihad-inspired terrorist acts. The Islamic revolution in Iran succeeded for the most part as an indirect result of US interference in Iran's internal political affairs for the previous 3 decades leading up to 1979. This took the form of CIA-backed coup-de-tat that unseated Iran's democratically elected nationalist president (Mossadegh) and installed its hand-picked puppet dictator.

The Shah then proceeded to repress his political opposition via suppression of freedom of assembly and the press and the establishment of his dreaded brutal state police (Savak), who rounded up and arrested, imprisoned, tortured, executed and exiled members of opposing political parties, including Khomeini. His exile ultimately elevated his status to that of national martyr, empowering him and his repressed Islamic party with the ability to hijack the 1979 revolution. In the meantime, the US cheerfully bankrolled the Shah's military for the duration along with reforms aimed at the creation of a modern westernized state. Lest we forget, we were against them after we were for them, and ended up arming Saddam Hussein during the 8-year-long Iran/Iraq War, which resulted in HALF A MILLION Iranian casualities at a cost of 600 BILLION US dollars.

This past track record, along with longstanding economic sanctions, is still a source of great resentment among many Iranians, to say the least. That said, and in view of sensitive nascent diplomacy targeting Iran's alleged nuclear capabilities, it is reasonable to conclude that (a) as Commander-in-Chief, national security of Israel and of the United States tied his hands during the post election uprising, (b) US endorsement of any political movement inside of Iran could be viewed as the kiss of death for that party, since it would be used as a powerful propaganda tool against the Green Movement by the regime, who would cast it as US backed, and (c) the US had no leverage with Ahmadinejad since they are mortal enemies. Thus, the distinct possibility is that an open endorsement of the movement or a call for Ahmadinejad to step down would have done much more harm than good.

On the other hand, Mubarak continued that cozy US-Egyptian relationship for 30 years after his predecessor, Anwar Sadat, broke ranks with the rest of the Arab countries and signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979 in order to regain EGYPTIAN land in the Sinai, invaded and OCCUPIED by Israel since 1967, a move viewed as utter betrayal at the time by the rest of the Arab World and as a sell-out to the West, which it was. This led to the disintegration of the Arab League, and has served to keep the region destabilized by pitting Arab against Arab. Mubarak has slept with the enemy, so to speak, ever since. His reward has been 1.3 billion dollars in annual US aid, enabling him to construct one of the most repressive secular regimes and to establish the strongest military (with the exception of Israel, of course) in the Middle East, not to mention enabling him to amass vast personal wealth to the tune of 70 BILLION dollars, while the majority of the population lives on less than 2 dollars per day.

Given the strong influence the US has in Egypt, surely you can see why it is appropriate for Obama to echo the sentiments and openly support the pro-democratic forces, especially in view of the blatant and transparent display of state violence against its own people...or can you?

Newsflash. Egypt is not the only country whose media uses scare tactics regarding the Muslim Brotherhood, who constitute less than 20 percent of the population. They are a repressed political party in a Middle Eastern country where 90 percent of the population is Moslem. They are also avowed enemies of Al-Qaeda in a country that has been victimized by Islamic terrorism and has cooperated with the West in its war against it. If Egypt adopts a secular democratic form of government and the Brotherhood emerges as a viable political party, there is no reason why they should not hold office. I would not lose a lot of sleep over their taking control in Egypt, despite the US media's ill-informed fixation on them. They have about as much of a shot at that as the Christian fundamentalists have here of seizing control of the system. The Egyptians I see in those streets do not strike me as the sort of groups who would allow one repressive regime to be replaced by another.

If Egypt withdraws from the peace treaty with Israel, it will not be at the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood. It would be because it is the will of the majority of the Egyptian population. Personally, I hope they do. It is about time that somebody force the US hand to withdraw the obscene amount aid US taxpayers can no longer afford to bankroll and that Israel is left to stand alone. Did it ever occur to you that, given our abominable history of failed foreign policy in the region, we could be on the wrong side of this history in that arena as well? Certainly, the illegal occupation flies in the face of our human rights principles and in no way reflects a genuine democracy by any stretch of the imagination. The time has come for the US to walk the walk both on human rights AND democratic core values.

Finally, Ahmadinejad and his ilk are not praising a pro-democracy movement in Egypt. Their official state position/propaganda is that this is an Islamic revolt in Egypt. That is what they are praising. At least, that is what they are telling their own people. No surprise there.

You really know the history of the middle east (see message) - lka

Finally, someone who tells it like it is and not just rhetoric. I also wonder if Hilary Clinton plays a big role in the overall picture of the middle east? It is a very fine line that the US walks with all of the middle east countries, who we support and who we sanction. I agree with you too about Israel... let them stand alone. We are spending so much in US dollars not to mention soldiers in these wars... why can't we kind of step out of those situations like our other allies. Are we really such a super power anymore I ask myself. With our economy, the decline in eduation and poverty in our country, why don't we do more with that money to really help our people? Maybe I am just dreaming but I am so sick of the propaganda and rhetoric that I could scream. Quite frankly, I'm surprised we have not had some kind of "uprising" in our country when you look at the haves and the have-nots.

In the name of so-called national security, he says he will redeploy abusive police force to the streets, rely on the loyalty of army which clearly has no intent of firing on its own people, and that he intends to die in Egypt after serving out his term.
