SHINGLES VACCINE QUESTION

Posted: Jan 5, 2012

Has anyone had a bad reaction to the shingles vaccine?  I am not big on vaccines and never get the flu, Pneumovax, etc.  However, doctor has recommended shingles vaccine because he said some of his patients have residual pain after having shingles.  Would appreciate any comments.

have had the shingles vaccination with no side effects. I had chicken pox, as have many people, and the odds of getting shingles are rather high. It is a nasty, painful condition, and can often strike the eyes and face. I'd rather not go through that. Do the research and weigh the pros and cons for you.

Shingles is a horrible, painful condition -- I agree. I also know how doctors encourage patients to take vaccines. However, I also know that many doctors DO NOT personally take those same vaccines and DO NOT give them to their children and other family members. I also know that a handful of BRAVE MDs are anti-vaccine and working to educate the public as well as their colleagues.

Please do yourself a favor and research therapies like high-dose vitamin C that support the immune system. I would do that before taking an aluminum-, mercury-, and squalene-laden toxic cocktail into my veins. But it IS a personal choice so entirely your decision.

NO vaccines for me. You just don't know what they're giving you these days. Heck...the docs don't even know most of the time and they don't care. Trusting your doc implicitly is one good way to get yourself killed. If my doc can't tell me what's in it or won't, then I'm not having it. I rely on good old natural medicine. It does the trick nearly all the time. Most disease is caused by something WE do to ourselves. Drugs and vaccines aren't going to fix it...they'll just cover up the symptoms...like painting over a crack. You might not see it, but it's going to keep cracking until you repair the crack. Gullible and stubborn people keep doctors in business, IMHO but it's job security. ; )
Actually, I am not against vaccines, what I am (sm) - yochana

against is the way the governmment allows all the deadly junk that is put in them. Millions of children would have died without the Salk vaccine, but back then...I believe the vaccine was pure and the motive behind it was to save lives. Now....the pharmaceutical companies just think about the money it will bring it. I had a real eye opener when I found out that these refresher courses that doctors take to learn about new methods and drugs are sponsered by.....the pharmaceutical companies. The Physicians Drug Reference is written by.....the pharmaceutical ompanies. Remember when your cholesterol was okay as long as it was under 300? Who made the new standards.....the pharmaceutical ompanies.

However, I do know that shingles is very devastating, but again the vaccine has only been proved to work 50% of the time, and only works best in those ages 60-70. And like you said...who knows what is in it??????

Thanks everyone for their replies

even more now. Years ago, the government cared a little more than they do now. Now, the pharmaceutical companies are so greedy they only want to see us all vaccinated and on a drug. I'm against vaccines because you don't know what's in them any more and we never will as long as Big Pharm is in control. Most of our ills are because of our diet, even though some like to claim it's the environment. Even shingles is linked to bad diet and today most everyone I know eats a horrible diet. I wouldn't even call it food and yet, they expect to stay healthy while relying on drugs and vaccines. To me, it's just insane. But...that's the way I see it. To each his/her own.

Glad you brought this up, yochana - Christine

This has been an issue with me, as well. I have a friend, who about 5 years ago had a terrible bout of shingles. She also suffers from MS, which, unfortunately, is progressing. What I saw her go through with shingles terrified me. She had the often typical waistband distrubition, and literally had to sleep at the dining room table naked with one arm used to prop up her head. The light touch of even a very light-weight nightgown against her skin was more than she could tolerate. She told me, even with suffering with MS for years, that singles was, by far, the most painful and difficult thing she has ever had to deal with. I spoke to my primary care physician regarding this, and she also said there is a 50% protection with the vaccine, and if and when you get shingles after receiving the vaccine the symptoms are not as severe. Like you, I wish I knew what to do. Good luck to you whatever you decide.

Thanks for your response Christine....what really got (sm) - yochana

me to thinking is a friend had shingles on one side of her face and if affected her optic nerve. I have combed the internet searching for pros and cons. I did find out that shingles in the facial nerve CAN leave you blind or deaf.

Found out that shingles vaccine is a super dose of the varicella (chicken pox) vaccine. The Zostavax does not create true immunity as other vaccines do. Lasts about 6 years. It has been around since 2006. Helps in 50% of cases, but if you do get shingles it lessens the pain, duration, etc.

I know vaccines have wiped out devastating diseases such as polio and the like. It's the fact that the government allows the pharmaceutical companies to put in harmful/unpure substances that worries me so much.

I have not been a big vaccine advocate, especially for flu and pneumonia. So I am in a real quandry about this.

Thanks everyone for their point of view.

PS - Did you know the FDA permits sawdust in our food (sm) - yochana

[ In Reply To ..]
A lot of time the fiber in bread is sawdust- labeled as cellulose. Most all calorie reduced foods rely on sawdust (cellulose) to add bulk to the product. And, the FDA allows 3% sawdust to be added to raw meat products.

Ain't that grand? :-(

He was a little uncomfortable, as it was on his side, and they gave him the cream for it, but he really just preferred to not have anything rubbed on him and he did just fine. He had a terrible case of chicken pox and I really think that since he had the chicken pox so bad that the shingles he had were not as bad because he had the antibodies in his system from having had such a severe case of chicken pox and when I say severe chicken pox, I mean a ton of spots from head to toe, although he was not really uncomfortable with that, still ran around and got into everything (was around 2) and really had fun in the extra Aveno bath daily splashing around. So I would say if you had a significant chicken pox outbreak, then you might not end up with a bad outbreak of shingles. I have not proof of this, just the way I see it. I used to work in internal medicine, geriatrics as a medical assistant and in all that time, never saw a real severe case of shingles and the antivirals help with the attack also. Weighs your pros and cons and do what you feel in your heart is best for you.

Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...
