Has anyone had shingles?????? Ow......

Posted: Dec 28, 2009

Day 9 of shingles.  This is AWFUL.  Wondering when these blisters are going to start drying up and when I will ever get another night's sleep.......

;

I had them about a year or so ago - Chickenpox in past

When I broke out knew what they were and made an appointment to go to the doctor, started treatment right away. Mine broke out, as typical, at the belt line. Mine were not as bad as I hear they can be. Did you know what they were, where did you break out and any treatment? Oh, hate to say but I hear they can recur.

On my back and stomach in a belt distribution. No treatment, just topical creams/lotions. Came on last week and then with the holidays was too late to start antiviral treatment anyway. Decided I'd tough it out as the rash didn't seem that bad at first. Yikes, bad decision.

Yep, they can recur - mlstoo

If you are taking immunosupressive medications, recurrance is likely. I had them the first time about 15 years ago, very severe, along the whole upper left torso, across my back and down my left arm. Had to go braless for 2 weeks. I also had them last year as well but in a much smaller amount in, of all places, right on my rear. Couldn't hardly sit for days. In fact, I saw 2 different doctors who didn't even know what it was. Finally, the dermatologist diagnosed it but it was almost too late for treatment. He gave me Denavir to help the drying up process. So far they haven't returned even though I have been very stressed out the past few months.

Stress did not bring mine on, having chicken pox as a child - is the #1 risk factor

I think now there are injections for the chicken pox, not for me as a child but I went to a dermatologist and told her think I have shingles and that was what it was. Mine were not bad at all, but hear can cause big problems and hurt a lot. I also do not know if after you have shingles if a vaccination helps then or not. Maybe others know.
Stress definitely can cause recurrences. My husband SM - MissIndigo

has had 3 occurrences, the second two, over a year apart, occurring directly after, frankly, his only two major temper tantrums in that period. We're talking screaming tantrums, but he no longer indulges since I've helped him understand the potentially severe consequences of permanent damage to his nerves, and he hasn't had another occurrence in about 6 years now. His shingles is of the face, trigeminal neuralgia.

The best answer lies in holistic rather than allopathic medicine.

Take huge doses of vit. C (if p.o., then take unesterifiefd and titrate up to bowel tolerance). Even better is IV vitamin C, which you can have administered in a naturopath's office. This will bolster your immune system, and those lesions will dry up promptly.

Yes, had a few people tell me that lemon balm helps. - cb

Can be applied topically and supposedly helps the lesions heal and not recur. I feel very sorry for anyone with shingles. I work in a doctor's office and have seen many come in with lesions on their face/scalp/eye area...can be so painful. Good luck.

I have a rare case of shingles........ - sm

I get them on the palm of my hand. My doctors said this is rare, but it does happen. I have an outbreak every few years or so and it is so painful, i can hardly close my hand! BUT, my mom is all into the "natural health", me, not so much, BUT she told me to try shark cartilage on it. She gave me some capsules and I broke them open and rubbed the powder on my hand and it DID heal MUCH faster and it was less painful. That was my last outbreak....it may have been coincidence, I won't know for sure till I have another one, ughhh!

Question about shingles - Curious

About a month ago, I had a single red raised blister-like area on my right arm, right above my biceps muscle. It almost looked like a burn, but I hadn't burned myself.

Once the rash started to fade in color, the pain in my biceps muscle began to set it and after a month is still there. I can't move my arm in certain positions or it triggers the pain. The pain is directly under where the rash was located (it's still there, and feels somewhat rough but has faded to a very pale pink and is almost nondetectable).

Does this sound like shingles?

I can't afford to waste the money going to the doctor if it's just muscle strain and the odd rash was coincidental, so any suggestions appreciated!

has anyone had shingles?  I had my first outbreak about 14 years ago, on my face, running along the back of my left ear in a line to my cheek.  It makes my face swell, looks horrible and is extremely painful.  Usually around my period I break out.  Sometimes monthly, sometimes once or twice a year, but for 14 years now. I have had outbreaks very often.  Docs have put me on Zovirax, Xanax, Zoloft, Valium and various pain meds for the post herpetic neuralgia and have even ...

Anyone know of a way to significantly reduce pain from postherpetic neuralgia?  My mom is 78 and the docs have tried  Lortab (they kept increasing the dose), Lyrica, Neurontin, acyclovir.  She can barely walk, is in the hospital again b/c the pain is so severe.  I am thinking maybe a pain mgt consult is in order here?  It seems nobody can figure out what to do. ...

SHINGLES VACCINE QUESTIONJan 05, 2012

Free Shingles Vaccine From MerckJan 30, 2013
Having heard how painful shingles is, I was really grateful to get my vaccine recently for free through the Merck Vaccine Patient Assistance Program.  I could not afford it out-of-pocket.  It can run as high as $250.  I know people who have had shingles and are now experiencing postherpetic neuralgia years out.  No, THANK YOU!  Just wanted to pass the information along to anyone who is interested in getting the vaccine, but does not have insurance. ...
