Shingles

Posted: Dec 16, 2010

has anyone had shingles?  I had my first outbreak about 14 years ago, on my face, running along the back of my left ear in a line to my cheek.  It makes my face swell, looks horrible and is extremely painful.  Usually around my period I break out.  Sometimes monthly, sometimes once or twice a year, but for 14 years now.

I have had outbreaks very often.  Docs have put me on Zovirax, Xanax, Zoloft, Valium and various pain meds for the post herpetic neuralgia and have even had that chicken pox shot.  Dogs are constantly telling me that I need to get my "stress" under control, but I don't believe that I've got a highly stressful life.

I eat right, meditate, do yoga, exercise and don't have stressors in my life.  Why does this keep happening?  I have had batteries of tests to check my immune system, all is well and other than this they tell me I'm healthy and in great shape.

When I am getting a breakout now, I can feel it coming.  Starts with a headache that feelis like someone stabbing me in the left eye and my skin on my cheek is so sensitive that even the water from the shower causes electrical shock pain.  It has happened so often that I have a discolored area on my face, not really a scar, but it's darker than the rest of my face skin and very obvious where it breaks out.

Any one?  Any suggestions?

I'm sick and tired of this.  According to my period calander i should start on the 23rd, which if the shingles decide to come, I'll have blisters all over my face for Christmas for the whole family to see and give me those "looks"...  No holiday pics for me.

I'd appreciate anyone's experience or any help.  The docs just say that "someones people get one breakout in their lifetime, other's get recurrent episodes", but come on!!!  The longest I went without a breakout was 11 1/2 months.

I believe the doctor gave my mom Lyrica when she had her first breakout this year. She had shingles on only 1/4 of her back, but was horribly broken out. I believe she took acyclovir, the Lyrica, and was given an external pain cream. She took it for quite some time after the breakout as she still had some nerve pain, but hasn't had a recurrence in the last 10 months. Hope that helps...

I would take a daily antiviral or increase lysine and do not eat nuts, peanut butter or chocolate as this tends to bring it out. Hope this helps.

I had shingles when I was about 15, about 35 years ago. Never even heard of them before that. I had it around my bra line. To this day, I cannot wear a bra. It really hurts. Never had a breakout since then. I eat tons of nuts and chocolate and never had any problem. Never heard of that. Not saying that is wrong, just never heard of it. Don't take anything special, just had them that one time.

My son had shingles when he was in middle school but - cindy

has never had a recurrence. He was given Zovirax cream, which I believe that you can buy over the counter now. You can also try a generic capsaicin cream which is the same thing and probably cheaper. If you are having a neuralgia pain, you should be on something like Lyrica or Neurontin. Regular pain killers do not work well against nerve pain. Have you ever seen a neurologist for the neuralgia? Also some kind of antiviral would be in order to treat and prevent the shingles such as acyclovir, Zaltrex, or Famvir. You should have one dose to control outbreaks and then another maintenance dose to take all the time to help prevent the outbreaks since they are recurring. I wish you well.

capsaicin (cayenne) pepper capsules 3 times a day. I have never had shingles but have told several people about this and they say it really works.

Anyone know of a way to significantly reduce pain from postherpetic neuralgia?  My mom is 78 and the docs have tried  Lortab (they kept increasing the dose), Lyrica, Neurontin, acyclovir.  She can barely walk, is in the hospital again b/c the pain is so severe.  I am thinking maybe a pain mgt consult is in order here?  It seems nobody can figure out what to do. ...

SHINGLES VACCINE QUESTIONJan 05, 2012

Free Shingles Vaccine From MerckJan 30, 2013
Having heard how painful shingles is, I was really grateful to get my vaccine recently for free through the Merck Vaccine Patient Assistance Program.  I could not afford it out-of-pocket.  It can run as high as $250.  I know people who have had shingles and are now experiencing postherpetic neuralgia years out.  No, THANK YOU!  Just wanted to pass the information along to anyone who is interested in getting the vaccine, but does not have insurance. ...
