Anyone know of a way to significantly reduce pain from postherpetic neuralgia? My mom is 78 and the docs have tried Lortab (they kept increasing the dose), Lyrica, Neurontin, acyclovir. She can barely walk, is in the hospital again b/c the pain is so severe. I am thinking maybe a pain mgt consult is in order here? It seems nobody can figure out what to do.

My son who is 22 got a shot last year for his shingles and has not had an outbreak since then. His first bout of shingles was when he was 7. It would not hurt to check into the shot as it will reduce the pain and the breakouts. He is living proof that it works. I will call and see what the name of it was if you would like for me to. Anything to help!

My sister said the Lidoderm 5% patch may help that type of pain.

has anyone had shingles? I had my first outbreak about 14 years ago, on my face, running along the back of my left ear in a line to my cheek. Has anyone had a bad reaction to the shingles vaccine? I am not big on vaccines and never get the flu, Pneumovax, etc. However, doctor has recommended shingles vaccine because he said some of his patients have residual pain after having shingles. Would appreciate any comments. ...

Having heard how painful shingles is, I was really grateful to get my vaccine recently for free through the Merck Vaccine Patient Assistance Program. I could not afford it out-of-pocket. It can run as high as $250. I know people who have had shingles and are now experiencing postherpetic neuralgia years out. No, THANK YOU!
