Red eyes, weight loss - hyperthyroidism

I'm catching up on medical problems after being without insurance for years. For the past year I have had weight loss, red eyes and a fine tremor at times. TSH was normal but T3 & T4 were very high. I'd been hypothyroid most of my life (35 years), now diagnosed with hyperthyroidism & Grave's disease. Had thyroid uptake 24 hour scan. The endocrinologist said that in 18 years of practice, the highest thyroid uptake he had seen was 60% in a patient with severe hyperthyroidism. Mine was 100%. The redness in my eyes is, as the endocrinologist described "thyroid hormones eating away at the back of the eye". If not treated, this leads to exopthalmos and problems with eyesight. I'm so relieved that this was caught in time to treat! I'll awaiting a total thyroidectomy, as simply using medication cannot always protect the eyes from damage.
So, if anyone evern has the symptoms of weight loss, red eyes, aggitation, possibly a fine tremor you need to have it checked out. TSH was perfectly normal so you would need a T3 and T4. I had no idea how dangerous this could be and just wanted to put out that warning about the symptoms.

[ In Reply To ..]Thanks for responding. I thought this was a cardiac problem at first and did a 2 week hear monitor which found 2 valves closing to slowly. Did you have a thyroid uptake scan, get T3 & T4? I'm pending a total thyroidectomy. When put on Methimazole and atenolol my heart rate went from 120 BPM to 84 BPM and all heart symptoms disappeared.
I hope you have seen an endocrinologist and get tested to make sure yoiur thyroid is normal, as this can go on for years without your knowing and cause you to lose your eyesight.
