Do you think it's possible to lose a bunch of weight

 and get back in shape?

Depending on what your current lifestyle is - sm

I do think it's possible. If you have already been eating well and exercising vigorously on a regular basis, it might be very difficult, though, because there won't be a significant change in your lifestyle, and hence, your results would probably not be that dramatic. I believe we really must consistently engage in resistance/weight training and eat a healthy, low-carb (definitely low-sugar) diet. However, if you are not currently exercising at all, and you have a poor diet, you might see great results by overhauling your health habits.

Good luck and good health to you!

I guess, as the one poster said, it depends on what you're already doing. If you are lazy-ing around and eating poorly, then yes, you can lose the weight by changing your diet some and moving around more.

Also, not sure what you mean by "shape." As to physical body "shape," as in getting the belly or other parts non-flabby, not sure. If you mean having more energy by eating better and moving around, then definitely.

Best of luck!

I forgot to mention that I lost 25 lbs at the age of 59. One's skin is not as elastic as when you're younger, so you surely may see some sag, but, I promise, you will look and feel better overall.

absolutely possible - anon

If you want it badly enough. That means lifestyle changes.

Best diet is the Mediterranean. Lots of fruits and vegetables and a major reduction in meat. Stir fry is one of the best things you can do for lunch and/or dinner meals.

Calories in/calories out. That's the bottom line. How many calories you consume depends upon how active you are. Here's a good rule of thumb. Determine what you want your goal weight to be and multiply that by 10. So, if you want to weigh 150 lb, it's 150 x 10 = 1500 calories per day. Also, and this is VERY important ... you must allow yourself a treat one day a week. Anything you want of reasonable portion. That might be 1 slice of pizza or a Dairy Queen ice cream cone, or something similar. If you have that to look forward to, you won't cheat the other day.

If possible, exercise for 60 min a day, 5 days a week. You also want to perform aerobics at a level where you're sweating. Also, if you use the treadmill, DO NOT hold on.

Fluid intake is critical and how much depends upon what you weigh. For your desired weight, 2 liters is sufficient. If you are more than 100 lb overweight, a gallon of fluid a day. If you don't take in enough fluid, your body will retain water.

You're not going to be able to lose weight as easily as you did when you were younger. Also, there's going to be some level of sagging ... no way to prevent it. Wear your sag with pride!

This sounds like a lot, but it's really very easy to do *IF* you're willing to put in the effort, every day, no excuses.

I couldn't remain a size 6 if I didn't.

for sure - FeelingGreat

Different things work for different folks, but me personally, I lost 50 lb with Weight Watchers in my mid/late 50s and feel like I'm in my 20s-30s again; went from puffing and panting merely walking down the street, to being able to hike 7 miles in Utah's Bryce Canyon on vacation. I was thrilled to both lose the weight and also feel GOOD. The weekly fee doesn't cost much, and even so, I felt it was offset in buying less at the grocery store and eating less. Locally, there are several weekly meetings to choose from, and several different leaders. A weekly meeting really helped me. Over that time, I found 3 leaders to whom I could relate very well. Everyone is in the same boat at the meetings, so there's no shame or humiliation. I think the secret to success was that I had to decide once and for all to make the WW plan a top priority every day, to see it all the way through, no excuses. It wasn't that hard, because I could eat a lot of food I liked and felt full. My husband agreed to go on it too, and the kids were grown and weren't a factor, so those circumstances were also helpful. The WW plan is also 1000% better than it was years ago (when I felt like I was starving all the time, mostly eating salads, and failed miserably!). Now, they understand how additional fiber can make you feel more full (and many food companies add it to their products, like bread), and WW helps you slowly get moving to begin exercising to boost the weight loss (tho you can earn extra food points that way too). So it's a well-rounded program. If you like fruit, their recent program emphasizes that quite a bit. But I also felt the program could be highly personalized to my own food and exercise preferences. Actually, I was on the program they had before WW went more "high tech" like they are now (apps etc) - I liked that old program and still follow it to this day. But there are of course many people who have great success with the newest program too, obviously. Many years ago it seemed as if almost no one lost much weight, or not for long, but now there are a huge number of people who are at goal. Very different scenario! That's my plug. I've been motivated to stay at goal for several years now, too, because I DON'T want to go back to where I used to be.

Need To Lose Baby WeightFeb 28, 2012
I had a baby 2 years ago and I have not worked out a day since then (bad I know).  Now, with summer coming up, I need to tone up and get in shape.  Anyone have a good workout they can share to lose the baby weight.  I've got about 10 pounds to lose, which isn't bad, but I'm so out of shape and kind of puffy, no muscle!  I really don't want to join a gym as I have a treadmill and some weights but really have no idea what kind of workout to do. ...

Weight WatchersApr 11, 2011
Hi, everyone!   I need to lose weight and nothing I have done has worked, so I different approach.  I don't want to do fake food like medifast or Nutrisystem, etc. - so I'm wondering about WW?  I hate those commercials, but I can overlook them if the program works.  Has anyone done WW and if so, what are the pros and cons of Meetings vs Online?   Since I already work at home and live alone, I'm thinking I should give myself a reason to get out at ...

Weight IssuesMar 25, 2012
Okay, I have always been a medium built girl, somewhat petite at 5'3 and always carried my weight well. Two years ago I quit smoking and packed on 20 lbs. I got busy working out and counting calories, and tried to change my eating habits. Okay, it was gradual, but I lost 10 lbs. Over the course of some months it continued to decline gradually. But this Winter around the holidays I pigged out. Then I went through a transition where I lost my job, quit cooking and eating healthy and jus ...

Weight Problem - Help!May 04, 2010
I am hoping some of you out there can help.  I am 5'4" and weigh 108 pounds.  I would like to gain 10 or 12 pounds so I look healthier.  Some people look at me like I either have a drug problem or I am bulemic, and that is SO not the case.  It is to the point I am getting very self-conscious about it and even getting to the point that I don't feel comfortable with my husband seeing me.  The problem is that I do not have an appetite a lot of ...

Are You Happy With Your Weight?Apr 18, 2013
Just wondering if any woman is ever truly "happy" with her body?  I have always had weight struggles and had gotten very heavy and I lost it all about five years ago.  I was happy, at first, but then it went away.  I am not underweight and am actually at the high end of "normal" weight, but I just cannot be happy about how I look.  I decided I needed to lose 10 more pounds for this summer and worked hard and lost it, but I still look in the mirror and I think I see myself a l ...

Menopause And Weight GainFeb 13, 2011
I found out about a year ago that I'm in full-blown menopause.  I have all the characteristic issues that go along with it.  All of my life I've had to watch what I eat and try to exercise regularly (but that isn't going nearly as well as it should be right now).  Some days I just have no motivation whatsoever.  My tighter and tighter fitting clothes should be motivation enough, but apparently it isn't.  I'm so tired of this weight gain and feeli ...

Weight Gain/GERDJan 23, 2011
Well, it seems I have myself in a corner.  I was eating what I wanted, how much I wanted, etc.  I have dealt with GERD symptoms before, but not so severe as now.  I wake up with bad heartburn, etc.  I vow to eat more sensibly and smaller amounts at a time.   I love hot tea throughout the day, and decaf coffee, one cup per day.  Can anyone tell me:   1.  Does green tea have caffeine?  A friend suggested I drink this. 2.  Is decaf tea ...

Anyone Else Had A Thyroidectomy & Weight Gain After?May 02, 2016
I had a total thyroidectomy 2 weeks ago. Started levothyroxine 112 mcg the day after. I've gained over 20 pounds already!  I seee the endocrinologist next week and am hoping that adjusting the dose of levothyroxine can make a difference.  If not, it will require starvation mode to keep the weight off.  I've never gained weight this fast before.  The also found adenocarcinomam in the thyroid but it was small and think they removed all of it.  ...

Weight Loss MedsOct 04, 2014

Weight Loss ShakesMay 13, 2015
Years ago I lost quite a bit of weight by substituting a weight loss shake for my lunch every day - now, going through menopause, I was looking at Slim Fast, but it is pure sugar so I was wondering if anybody knew of one that is made up of something more natural.  I like the powder to mix with milk rather than the premade ones - they are too expensive for me.   Anybody have a suggestion? ...
