How long is this menopause thing gonna last?

Posted: Nov 22, 2010

My LMP was almost 3 yrs ago.  Not too many hot flashes, about 3 a day, but the ones at night wake me up, so I don't get good sleep.  I'm 46 now, menarche at 10.  Saw an ob/gyn 3 ysa and said my LH and FSH were too low to be having any more periods.

Any info, this is just the pits.  Mood swings, swelling, weight gain, you know the gory details.  Tried soy pills and tofu/soy products, but made the hot flashes worse and will not use hormones.   I feel like I still have cycles, hormonal changes, but no bleeding.

I had a TVHBSO in March. I'm only 43 and I wasn't having any perimenopausal symptoms at all. Heavy bleeding, but that was status quo my whole life. They removed my ovaries because I was diagnosed with estrogen receptor positive breast CA. The hot flashes were absolute misery, really intense and so uncomfortable. I think chemo may have made it worse too. At any rate, I started taking vitamin E and the hot flashes stopped almost immediately. Try it! I hope it works for you too.

I have had Texas chainsaw massacre bleeding....age 49. Irregular periods since age 45. I recently saw an OB/GYN who is known here in the SF Bay Area as the menopause maven. She put me on birth control pills. I have a strong family history of breast cancer, i.e. mom and aunt both pre-menopausal, so I was a bit nervous, but she assured me I was fine and that BC pills have nothing to do with hormones. Unfortunately, the Seasonique made me a crazy woman, but I have friends who are on birth control and refuse to go off.....they feel so good. Talk to your doc.

Thanks for the tips - Kittymama

I never had heavy bleeding, just worried about taking hormones. No breast cancer in my family, but a lot of heart disease, so that is what I worry about. Also, haven't been to the doc because although I have insurance, deductible is $3000 and so would have to pay up front for everything, lab work, etc. Will have to think about it. Just wondering how many years its gonna last.

Will try the Vitamin E. Have tried most OTC remedies, primrose oil, progesterone cream, either didn't work or made the hot flashes worse. I am starting to exercise more, hoping I will be more tired so I can sleep better, hasn't worked yet, just made me more tired. Sorry I'm complaining, just need to vent, thanks for putting up with me.

And I'm waiting for the hammer to drop. - Please!

I'm 49 and still regular like a clock. The only thing that has changed in recent years is that I'm always, constantly, chillingly cold. Had thyroid studies, and all was well. In fact, I had a slew of studies done, especially to check my circulation. Nothing. I can only think that it may be related to the fact that I lost 50 pounds a few years ago. I've also upped my physical activity. I'm good and warm when I work out or move around, but it seems that the second I stop, I'm cold, and I'm cold until I start moving again. My resting heart rate is down in the low 60s now that I run and or walk 5 or 6 miles a day. So, I guess it's all related to being healthier. LOL! Go figure.

In the meantime, I'd just like to be done with periods. That would be nice. But no sign of it letting up. I asked my mother when she had her LMP, she said 54. Ack! 50-freekin-4! Her mother apparently was in her 50s, as well. Sigh. Oh, well. In the meantime, I'm wondering how I'll adjust to hot flashes after being cold all the time.

Monthly cycles seem wonderful compared to menopause symptoms. Generally menopause symptoms last 8-10 years according to medical science with the symptoms becoming less severe as time goes on. However, it just depends upon your own unique person. My grandmother was 89 when she died and was STILL having hot flashes!! Although I felt like I was suffocating this summer with HF, the brain fog and lethargy is what is killing me. I cannot remember anyone's name and I feel like I have been run over by a locomotive. My energy level is zilch. I am fixing to begin a supplement called maca root for menopause symptoms, especially the bone crushing fatigue. I will update on this after a few weeks. While researching natural remedies I came upon a very interesting article that said NOT to take Black Cohosh for menopause. It is a natural estrogen BUT when you take it, the little estrogen your body is still producing CEASES and you are now dependent on the Black Cohosh. I also had insomnia where I'd lay awake until 5 am and finally fall asleep. Magnesium citrate 200 mg twice a day helped this. www.puritanspride.com has this at a very reasonable price. Be sure to get the powdered form in a capsule...your body absorbs it better.

I was diagnosed 4-1/2 years ago, when I was completely out of my mind with the mood swings. Not so much the hot flashes, but some insomnia and intermittent skin rashes. I would be filled with hate for everyone and then someone would flip the internal switch and I would be the neediest, depressed @$$ on the planet. Never did the hormones, and glad I didn't. I am now at a point where I still have syptoms roughly 2 days a week and not as severe. The insomnia is mostly gone, the mood swings have lessened, and I haven't killed anyone, so I see light at the end of this tunnel, finally!

I did increase the vitamin D, one of my reference books says it can help calm the body. I walk 3 miles a day most days, so I could get myself tired enough to sleep fairly well. Good luck to you, it does get better!

I know it says its for depression...but I had a heart attack after being on hormones only after 2 years (surgical induced menopause). The hot flashes were so bad, I'd stand in front of the freezer and fan myseld 3-4 times a day. Doc put me on St. Johns and they didn't kill the flashes but knocked the heck outta them where its bearable. Good Luck!

Questions about SJW - Kittymama

Is it addictive, like do you have to titrate upward to effect and then back down when you want to stop? How many mg per day do you take? Do you buy it OTC or by Rx? I tried it in a tea form once, don't think I took enough for it to work. Any info helpful, Thanks.

I buy mine at the health food store, right over-the-counter. I've taken it for years and quit sporadically and started back again when symptoms started rearing their ugly head again. I've never titrated. I take 2 a day, as recommended on bottle instructions but feel certain there are different brands/dosages. Its really helped me in the long-run and thats all I take for menopausal symptoms.

I've delt with the whole syndrome for ??10 years I think, just toughing it out, no hormones or any supplements for that. Then I finally took the suggestion of a friend and got Estraven at the drug store (or Walmart). Wow. one supplement pill a day and virtually no more issues. The extra-strength works best for me. My friend prefers the extra-energy. Wished I had tried this years ago.

Going Through Menopause - When Will I Ever Get Through It?Dec 09, 2009
I am forgetful.  I am fatigued.  My perception is off.  When asked a question sometimes I know in my mind what to say, but then the wrong answer comes out my mouth, i.e. "is the elevator going up or down"  I would say going down, but in my mind I knew it was going up and that is what I thought I was saying until it comes out of my mouth as opposite. ...

I'm 46 and I think it's too early for full menopause, but can you start going into premenopause much sooner?  What's the average age for that?  The reason I ask is that for the past year, I've been having some weird symptoms and am just now wondering if it has anything to do with hormones/menopause symptoms;  the worst of which was an episode where I woke up with the room spinning around me.  It was terrifying.  Then right afterwards I got really nau ...

Menopause QuestionOct 05, 2015
I'd appreciate any insight: I have recently developed pain in my nither region. I thought yeast infection, got an OTC treatment with no relief. Made an appointment with my doc, but got a clean bill of health. The pain persists, doc ordered tests, ultrasound, all normal. He thinks dryness or perhaps the beginning of atrophy, said we could try hormones but I haven't decided on that.  Has anyone ever had this?  It's not excruciating, but it does hurt, like I got a hefty kic ...
