How long should I ask to take off for hysterectomy

Posted: Aug 25, 2016

I have a hysterectomy coming up, and the doctor recommended taking a week off and am wondering if that if an excessive amount of time.  It will be done robotically and endoscopically and my first major surgery.  My work day is not overly busy (about 4-6 hours of dictation), but usually comes in right as I am going to bed and through the night, and has to be in by 2 PM my time, so there isn't an entire 24 hour turnaround to play with.  Can anyone give me a timeline of how long you took off?

;

a week off???? - wow

Physical recovery time is 6 weeks. Working at home, you could go back sooner if you feel good enough. Maybe try part-time in a couple weeks to see how it goes. I haven't had one but know a few who did. None went back to work after only a week. I did, however, have shoulder surgery and went back to the office after a few days. Big mistake, but I had a project that was due. Don't make yourself go back to work too soon. It's hard to "undo" the consequences sometimes or simply go back to taking the time off you should've in the first place.

well it depends. Are you having a vaginal hysterectomy - or an open one?

different recovery time for each.

It will be endoscopic 3 small incisions in side and 1 in bellybutton NM - Just Me

I took 3 weeks off work after mine, but a also had a bladder repair after they nicked my bladder. The first week I had a catheter and didn't even leave the house! The second week was better, no catheter, but still didn't do much. My doctor asked me if I wanted to go back to work. I said NO and took the third week to just have a good time - LOL!

I had a robotic endoscopic hysterectomy last year. My doctor wanted me off work for six weeks.. I took five weeks and had to go back because I needed the income. I had no pain and it was an easy recovery... but I was TIRED..Your body needs time to recover. I think two weeks to three weeks would be doable if you just can't afford to take off more but give yourself a break.. its still major surgery.

I had endoscopic supracervical hysterectomy - and I had one day down time

I was single and had a 3 yo child in the home to care for. I took off the day after and then started (from home) working the next day, but only part time. I really did not have any pain, but as someone else mentioned, I was extremely tired. After a week, I felt able to return to full time work.

If it had not been a necessity for me, I would have waited a full week to start working again.

hysterectomy time off - MT

I had an open hysterectomy with scraping of a great deal of endometriosis and ended up being out 10 weeks. I couldn't even stand up when being discharged from the hospital. I was exhausted and it took me at least 15 minutes to just be able to get from a sitting to standing position.

All that being said even with the endoscopic approach you need to realize that there will be stitches internally which need to heal. My physician did not allow me to drive for 8 weeks due to the lifting of the left from break to gas which he stated could pull the interior stitches. I'd take more time than a week off for sure.

I don't know about y'all, but sitting down was my least favorite thing to do after my hysty. I just wanted to lie down. DO NOT push yourself.

I got six weeks after mine. Woo-hoo! - :)

maybe less if done robotically.

One week? I had a hysterectomy done for fibroids 2 years ago and my surgeon suggested - six weeks

[ In Reply To ..]
Mine was done robotically. It's the sitting up in one position that will be the strain in going back after only one week. Although I took the six weeks (I had health insurance and took short-term disability), it was about 3 weeks before sitting up felt more comfortable, and longer before I could sit for hours in that position. Also, as someone else mentioned, you are going to be very tired. Don't forget that going under anesthesia affects you too.

But be prepared just in case - I am the exception that proves the rule

I was scheduled to undergo a Da Vinci Procedure which had to be converted to an open. I had a terrible time postop and ended up spending an entire month in the hospital with 2 months recovery time before I could return to work. I had always been healthy and this was entirely unexpected. So although it is highly unlikely your experience would reflect mine, have a back-up contingency plan just in case things go awry.

I am embarrassed to say, I was back typing at home after 1 week... - unluckyMT

only because I was not told at my job I could have had up to 6 weeks. This was when I was an actual employee with benefits but worked at home.

I pulled myself up to the desk because I thought I was not going to have any money coming in. It may not have even been a week. I had a hard time even getting to the administrative building to get a back-to-work physical, but they cleared me...

Do yourself a favor, and everyone else, take as much time as possible because everything in healthcare as we all know is statistics. If you take only a week, then for someone down the road that will become the norm and more time will not even be an option in the future, even if some people need more time than others.

Physically it was not too bad for me, but I think I should have taken more time to rest, emotionally and mentally. It is a somewhat easy procedure to go through; however, it is life-changing because of loss of hormones, possible hair loss, etc.

(I did get to see the robot before they put me out, which was exciting for me since I type those reports and was curious! It looked like a big silver spider all curled up)

Good health to you and hope you have an easy recovery. Pamper yourself afterwards!

My HR people failed me and did not tell me I could have had 6 weeks...I probably could have used another 1-2 weeks but also probably not 6, but I wish I would have had that choice...I really believed I was not going to have a paycheck so I pushed so hard, and that was wrong.

3 days - Tina

I agree. Take as much time as you can. I had an abdominal hysterectomy and started working after 3 days because I was an IC at that time with small children and a husband who was allergic to regular employment. Years later I had to have laparoscopic surgery on one of my ovaries and I was so full of adhesions, they could barely get to it. Your health is very important. Take care of yourself.
