Funny that Obama went west yelling about how clean and awesome natural gas is, only to have his Department of Interior minister declare over 2 million acres off limits to natural gas exploration after his reelection. Now all those people who voted for him, thinking he was going to allow natural gas exploration and the jobs that went with it are stuck. Much like those in Ohio who voted Obama because they were screaming that Romney would stop their benefits awoke today to find their food stamps will be cut by $50 a month in January.

It's a proposal, not a declaration, that is subject to an initial 30-day protest period, then a 60-day process to ensure its compliance with local and state policies. It's not 2 million acres, it's 1.6 that are subject to PARTIAL restrictions from W's original 11th hour land grab on his way out the White House door. The proposal still ADDS 677,000 acres for oil shale development in CO, UT and WY, plus another 130,000 for tar sands production for NEW development.

Progressive westerners appreciate efforts to preserve their wilderness tracts, especially in areas of protected endangered species habitat, in this case, the sage grouse. They also understand a cautious approach to oil shale development, a method that has yet to reach commercial scale status, while raising legitimate concerns over water use in semiarid and arid regions of our country. Meanwhile, the administration is issuing research, development and demonstration leases to address this problem.

No liars. No fraud. Just an out-front, reasonable, even-handed and balanced approach to land management and resource development, not an arbitrary GOP scorched earth approach.

As for Ohio food stamp recipients, for the last time, who gets how much in food stamps assistance is a function of STATE government policy. That would be GOP John Kasich and his crew.
