Debate impressions?

Posted: Sep 17, 2015

On TV this morning, Trump is complaining about the length of the debate.  Commentators are saying he appeared tired and "disappeared"  for about 40 minutes.  Kind of amusing coming from the "high energy" guy.  Do you think if he got the 2:00 am phone call he would say "call me back after 10 and I've had my coffee"?

I think it is sort of insulting that he is complaining about standing for 3 hours.  Just think of all the Walmart workers on their feet all day, some working multiple jobs to make ends meet.

;

I thought Chris - Christie was going

[ In Reply To ..]
to accordion his podium the way he was leaning on it. Debate much better than the Fox one. I think Huckabee, Walker, and Christie should fold up their tents. No sizzle or spark.

Fact checking the Republican debate - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Not sure facts matter, but these are some of the problem issues.

Someone needs to fact-check MSN. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Fiorina was right about video showing the aborted fetus on the table (and stuff even more horrific). MSN is not - but then, that's hardly surprising.

Much better than the first debate - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Although I was concerned with the pitting one another against each other with the Donald insult resolutions. They worked out okay. No one really seemed to take the bait too much. I didn't think Fiorina's comment was "all that," but others seemed to like it. I thought Jeb was a bit childish about the defense of his wife/apology thing. Thankfully, these childish exchanges were a minor part of the debate.

Carson's humor was more of my liking, telling Trump he is an "okay doctor."

But the real issues, war mongering, with Christie so much as saying I'm going to absolutely military pound anyone (ANYONE???) if anything like 911 were to happen, and ask questions and talk about it later. That sort of response should be reserved for an ongoing attack on U.S. or one of our principal allies, on a military target, known to be involved in and planning further attack...like Pearl Harbor for instance. We had no reason for the Iraq/Afghanistan attacks except we thought somebody involved might be in one of those countries. I sure hope they don't hide in my neighborhood!

The Donald tamed himself a bit last night, which I think was good, but it might confuse his die hard supporters, as the bombastic is what they like. He also showed himself to be sort of stupid on a variety of issues. However, I do think he was listening to the others and learning from them....so if third hand, arm chair foreign policy works, I guess he could be the man.

Did anyone notice there was no one for Fiorina to shake hands with at the end. She just sort of wandered around, waiting for someone to notice her. She is still their token woman and I don't think she will ever have the complete backing of the Republican good ole boys.

Fiorina versus the Clinton machine could be interesting. That is of absolutely no interest to me, but it could be interesting.

No meaningful discussion of college education, poverty, climate change, minimum wage (?)?? unless they slipped it in during one of my breaks. 6 hours is a long time to listen to this drivel. Better than the Donald's rally speeches though, oh so much better.

Marco Rubio - all the way. - Voter

[ In Reply To ..]
Rubio was mature and extremely knowledgeable, passionate, and lent a human side to the debate that many people I know, and myself, could relate to. Truly hoping his numbers rise. Christie was also mature and likeable with a lot of great things to say. Carson, too, but I worry he isn't "strong" enough to lead the country. I've always liked Cruz, but he plays to his base too much. Otherwise, no one else stood out, especially not Bush. I agree - Trump may say some of the "right" things, but his time is nearly over. It's time for the real candidates to shine.

Nope, it's Carly. Wouldn't mind if Rubio was on the - ticket as VP.

[ In Reply To ..]
Carly would eat Clinton for lunch. She reminds me of Margaret Thatcher. Rubio, not so much, but a good choice for VP.

Rubio as VP good idea because he'd still be - pretty young in 8 years to run for Pres..

Walmart workers don't stand in one spot continuously - for 3 hours. Please.

[ In Reply To ..]
...and they have breaks. Trump has a very legitimate point; 3 hours is ridiculous for a number of reasons.

I was leaning this way, but after last night it's definitely Carly for me. Sharp, on point and well-informed.

Cruz/Carly for me. - NM

These question and answer "debates" (they aren't - really debates), seem to ignore Cruz

He has an awesome delivery. The press knows this and shut him down right at the point where it starts to kick in.

I was frustrated over the govt shutdown question. Do they - realize that a shutdown is looming because
[ In Reply To ..]
all spending is lumped into one bill? If we had individual spending bills, it would be hard for Obama to veto the defense bill because Congress won’t fund Planned Parenthood. If he did veto it, the blame would be on him and not the republicans. I realize that the reason for one bill is so that everybody's“ pork” passes, but this is insane.

Ted was respectful, unlike Carly who butted in like - it was the Carly show.

[ In Reply To ..]
Tapper ignored him.
Tapper is afraid of Cruz. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
He is afraid of most of them. When they were into the "meat" of their answers, he tried to shut them down. He made himself look weak.

I was glad to see Carly stand up for herself. She's an awesome lady who has a lot of eloquence and class in addition to intelligence, passion and courage.
JT didn't look very happy when Carly was tearing into Hillary. - I loved it.

I agree, he's afraid of Cruz. He received little time - and was rarely called on.
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't get why his strong Reaganesque values are not resonating with conservatives. He has the track record to prove it.

However, he doesn't seem to have the ability to advance his positions within the of "cult of personality" which now drives politics.

Still, I continue to support him.
Did you notice how many candidates had to correct Tapper - when he misstated their positions?
[ In Reply To ..]
He must not have taken good notes on the interviews he conducted prior to the debate, or maybe his recorder had fuzzy playback sound. (We all know what that sounds like.) To me, Tapper is a wannabe Jennings or Cronkite. He is nothing in my book and made himself look weak, especially when he tried to prevent the candidates from finishing their responses.
If Carly wanted to play the gendre card intelligently, she - should say something like
[ In Reply To ..]
I"m a woman running against many men. I’m not going to hold against them because they’re males.

Something like Reagan would have said.

Very interesting to read these comments - Rubio, Cruz, Fiorina

[ In Reply To ..]
I personally know no one who would support any one of them. Wouldn't even consider them as a plausible candidate for the Republican side. So far from possible for them that they become green and a little ill at the thought.

I wonder if Kasich is going to get anywhere? Carson would just be funny, given some of the inner workings and thought processes of the Republican party.

Big irony of the debate - sm

Cruz standing in the Reagan Library, in front of Ronnie's plane, saying "Ayatollah Khomeini," seemingly having conveniently forgotten that Ronnie sold arms to IRAN. How soon they forget.

We're too busy thinking about the secret arms deal - behind Obama;'s Syria fiasco

My Take On The Debate. SmOct 14, 2015
I was struck last night by the huge difference in what we can infer about the nature of Bernie's and Hillary's thought processes while they were processing the challenging questions that Anderson Cooper threw out at them individually. Hillary's demeanor reminded me of one of those canned Miss America Pageant contestant types whom you can tell is so focused on searching her memory bank for a previously stored 'good answer' that the importance of the issue itself was tota ...

How To Debate The DonaldAug 03, 2015
This article is amusing. I would hope there is a lot of practice going on for other Republicans on how not to let him get under their skin. They should refuse to answer him directly (which I don't think they are supposed to anyway) and calmly present their perspective, no matter how wild his responses and answers are. If possible, they should ignore him and pretend he has not spoken at all. I particularly liked this reference-- "Other than a dart gun?," he said. "A tranquilizer gun ...
