This is a poll only, not to have people bickering

Posted: Feb 24, 2014

I am too old and too tired to continue to fool with this mess. I have over the past 3 years had my debit card and my credit card (both with BOA) shut down completely. Yesterday I got email stating my credit card because of "possible fraud" on the account. I am never called, just shut down and I have to go to the bank, get new debit and lots of frustration for me. I shopped at Christmas close by my home and had the debit shut down, without notifying me first, because it was a store I "didn't normally shop at." I understand they are watching out for fraud but I am never notified first, just off with the card.  Have had the same cards for 20+ years now.

My question to others is - if you have a debit, credit or both have you been shut down on your account or are you notified first, asking if perhaps you are making a transaction?

We choose not to use debit cards - But...

...if our credit card company sees more than our usual activity or suspicious activity, they will call to make sure, but they do not shut us down until they talk to us. (Never used a debit card, so I don't know how that works.)

By "more than our usual activity" , they mean they see, say, more than $2000 in a given month than we normally spend. By "suspicious activity," one time they meant they noticed a lot of gas station activity crossing state lines. We were moving to Florida from NJ and drove the whole way. But no, never been shut down until they spoke to us.

I would imagine they're extra careful with debit cards, because there's no turning back---it's gone from the account in the blink of an eye. With a credit card, there's a delay before the money is withdrawn from your bank account.

I have had that happen once. (sm) - Rose

I was running errands and shopped at 3 stores, one after the other. At Walmart my debit card was denied at Walmart when I had plenty of money in my account (loooong time ago). I had to go to Customer Service and call the bank, answer security questions and confirm that I was the one that made recent purchases, then they approved it. It was very embarrassing to delay the others in line who probably thought I had insufficient funds since they didn't give a reason.

Sure has... - no notice

It happened last year on vacation out of the blue. I had a huge cart of groceries and was told my card didn't work. I was pretty embarrassed. What was weird is that we have used that card at that exact store several times, as we always vacation in the same place, so it seemed pretty arbitrary. I just went out to the car and got a different card and called the bank. They reactivated it without any problems.

To differentiate between - Being cut off and card not working

...sometimes our credit card just doesn't work, don't ask me why. But it has nothing to do with we have no funds. We don't know if it's the magnetic strip getting funky or what.

One time, I gave our credit card number to someone on the phone because I was signing up for a class, and for some reason, her end denied it. I called the bank and the mystery was never resolved; they said we were in good standing and all that, so who knows.

I sell gift certificates by phone, and if I do not get every bit of pertinent info from the cardholder from the security code on the back right down to their mailing address, the credit card company absolutely denies it. I have been embarrassed when a customer is treated like they did something wrong when it was my fault. On the other hand, many people get slightly miffed as they are answering a lot more questions by phone because the increased risk of fraud whereas at a terminal you just swipe and that's it.

BOA has a very vigilant fraud department, but yes - it is frustrating SM

I have BOA too and have also had my cards shut down a few times. I occasionally do a lot of shopping online and it goes like this:

Without me knowing, they've frozen my account so my purchase is denied. Within about 10 to 15 minutes, I will get a phone call from their fraud department, as well as an email from their fraud department. The phone call and email always come AFTER they have shut my card down, never before. I talk to them, verify my recent purchases, and then they reset my card so it'll work again.

It's frustrating, but I put up with it because one time there WAS some kind of fraud going on with some purchases that I had never made and they caught it and shut my card down. That's the only time I had to actually replace the card and wait for the replacement card in the mail. All the other times (which were legitimate charges by me), they simply "cleared the fraud hold" on my card so I could start using it again.

OP- my husband has debit card from California - and we live in SC.

He uses his card any and everywhere he travels, never has to call to say he will be in this state or that state, never has had his cancelled, nothing and his job consists of traveling. I am finished with BOA. When your bank scares you with their practices, time to get out. Thanks all.

BOA - TravelinMT

I have traveled all over the U S. on business and pleasure with my BOA debit/credit card and have never had it blocked. There were cities that had no BOA branch so I would use grocery stores/Target/Walmart to get cash back and never a problem.

The only time I notify my bank or credit cards of travel is when I am going out of the country.

I understand why they just shut them down, when a card is compromised it is usually done with a scanner and within hours they can charge thousands of dollars. Remember...if they don't catch the people the bank/credit card company has to eat the loss...not us.
Consider yourself very, very lucky - because mine closed down

because I shopped at a store at Christmas about 10 miles from my home that I do not normally shop at. Nothing compromised then. No one, not my husband, not my daughter have the same issues but then they bank at a different bank. You can be over zealous and in this case, with this being the 5th time it has happened to me, just too much. I was on a trip this past year, had that happened (although I told them up front about my travels) I would not have had my debit for 3 days, carry no cash so would have been left on my fellow travelers to show me some mercy and perhaps buy me something at least to eat.

I have a Capital One and they sent me a new - card with new number

because I shopped at Target.

Get two checking accounts - with two cards

then if this happens again you can transfer funds from one bank to the other and use the other cards.

Or you could utilize checks. Even if the card is shut down you should be able to write a check.
