Planning a baby shower -- refreshment ideas needed!

Posted: Jun 1, 2010

I've ordered the cake.  Back when I was having my babies, baby showers consisted of cake, nuts, mints, and punch.  And a couple of games and then of course present time for the mom to be.

Someone had suggested crackers and cheese and spreads, and veggies and dip.  Finger foods.  Is that all necessary?  Will I make a gigantic faux paux if I just serve cake?  We having in the church with close family and friends and I just want it to be nice and casual.

I'm not much of a party planner, but my sister is the grandmother-to-be and she was trying to plan it and I felt that just wasn't right, so I told her to stop being a control freak and let me do it and now I'm drawing a blank.  It's been too long since I've had kids and too long since my friends had kids.  I haven't been to a baby shower in a long while!  Help!

Thanks!

I think that just cake and punch would be fine... - Kendra

I am not a huge cake person and would appreciate the veggie platter, but I certainly don't think that it is necessary. One really neat thing that was done at my baby shower, though, was that they put together a box with recipe cards and labeled the box "Recipe for Success". Everyone wrote down tips for the baby (as they all already had children). I found much of it to be very useful and sweet. I only wish that everyone had put their names at the bottom of their suggestions because I was looking at it the other day and could not remember who wrote what. Anyway, I just thought it was such a cute personal touch that I wanted to pass it on. :)

How elaborate and how much $$ are you looking to spend? A veggie tray or two is definitely a good idea. Deviled eggs would work, too. If you have a membership to Sam's or Costco, they always have things like frozen meatballs that you could put in a crockpot fairly easily, they have little puff pastry things that are savory and sweet, I know I've seen tortilla roll ups or something similar. I know I've seen mini quiches, too, and those heat up pretty easily. If you just want to do simple, I'd go for the nuts and mints and a veggie tray and a fruit tray and then the cake. You could do a fancier punch with soda and lime sherbet, or freeze bits of fruit in a big ice block that floats in the punch.

LOL, You don't want to meet my family! - Never too much food!

My mother's side of the family is Eastern European. My father's side of the family is Italian. Both are "right off the boat" and everything we do involves days and days of cooking. Every event means there has to be a spread of food with umpteen choices. The most horrible sin in the world would be to run out of food. And people come with empty containers, because everyone expects to take food home with them!

My husband's family is more subdued when it comes to food. They are more of the cake and punch crowd. I always eat before I go to one of their parties. And when they come to my house for a party, their eyes nearly pop out of their heads. Picture the party scene in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" when the in-laws meet for the first time. The only thing different is the menu selection.

I think that whatever you offer will be appreciated. The focus is on the mom-to-be, after all. One thing I can tell you, the more food you have, the longer your guests stay! Have fun!

Loved your post and had to chuckle. I come from a big Italian family too, and food is the center of all our celebrations. With only two kids left at home, my husband cooks (yes,he does) like there are 13 in the house.

When I did my DIL's baby shower, we did a taco bar. Just made a bunch of taco meat, spanish rice, lettuce, tomatos, cheese, sour cream, salsa, chips...and of course cake and drinks. Everyone loved it, of course in our family parties and showers are always co-ed, so the men really enjoyed not having to eat finger sandwiches. It was simple to prepare too, just keep everything warm in crockpots...have fun!

I just threw a baby shower for my niece. I did finger foods like crab dip, deviled eggs, etc. I also made chocolate-covered strawberries and they were a huge hit.

I think a lot would depend on what time of day you are planning the shower. If it's around noonish (11:00-2:00) I would definitely have some type of food around, even it's just a vegetable/fruit tray or maybe some sort of taco dip and chips. If it doesn't start until around 2:00, I think you would be fine with the cake and punch.

I'm from the south (New Orleans) and have a HUGE Italian family so everything revolves around food. It would be a horror if there wasn't a huge spread. However, I'm in Idaho now and gave my step-daughter a baby shower 2 years ago. We live about an hour from her so everything had to be transported. I was embarassed because I had only made finger sandwiches, had a vegetable tray, a fruit tray and cake. When everyone got there, they were amazed that I had so much food (they have no idea). I guess it's a regional thing. If it's for friends and family, if you're truly concerned, I would ask someone who is invited that I was close to what they thought, perhaps someone younger who has been to a shower recently.

I agree that the get together is more important than what is served.

Good luck!

Question About Baby Shower Etiquette.Jan 29, 2015
My friend is having her second baby and she decided that I should throw her baby shower this time.  I said sure and I suggested a diaper shower since this is her second baby in a relatively short period of time (2 years) and she has found out she is having the same sex, so in my mind at least, she already has all the "stuff."  She seemed very offended by this, so fine I decided to call it a baby shower and let people decide on their own.  Now my friend has taken to checking in wit ...

Obama's Last Money Shower For The UN, SomeFeb 03, 2017
In its last year in office, the Obama Administration showered at least some $9.2 billion on the United Nations and its sprawling array of organizations, according to a document recently posted on the State Department website. The total is gleaned from a document that summarizes U.S. government spending for international organizations, and is about 20 per cent higher than the $7.7 billion figure given out by State for 2010, before the Obama Administration abruptly quit providing any overall ...

Advice On Recaulking ShowerJun 17, 2015
My very cheap stall shower needs recaulking. I removed the old caulk and cleaned the everything. I've watched several YouTube videos on this, but my shower is very uneven compared to the videos I've watched. What I mean is that at the corner of the shower the wall and shower pan are further apart than on the sides. Has anyone ever done this? I could use some advice from an actual person. Having never done this before I'm not sure if I should use a caulk gun or if I can just squeez ...

Belgium: Muslim Migrant Stabs Priest Who Let Him Use Shower.Aug 01, 2016
attack was not terror-related, which they would probably be doing even if it were. What no one is considering, however, is that it is a manifestation of the very different culture of the migrants: one that considers non-Muslims obligated for the financial upkeep of Muslims (cf. Qur’an 9:29), and which sanctifies violence as a holy act (cf. Qur’an 2:191, 4:89, 9:5, 47:4, etc.). The consequences of admitting large numbers of people from such a culture into Europe could well be catastrophic, an ...

CNN Says Brides Cannot Be Tacky In Planning Wedding ButOct 15, 2009
Watching a program this morning and a person asked about taking a gift to a wedding. These were people not really close and she was asking how would it be if she took an unsigned check, went to the wedding, checked it out INCLUDING what was being served at the reception and then slip into the ladies room and wrote out what she thought the wedding, I guess, was worth to her. I Guess No One Saw This Coming--Cutting Family Planning MeansMar 03, 2013
"Using taxpayer dollars to finance family-planning services has become politically thorny in Texas, largely because of Republican lawmakers’ assertions that the women’s health clinics providing that care are affiliated with abortion providers. In the fiscal crunch of 2011, the Legislature cut the state’s family-planning budget by two-thirds, with some lawmakers claiming that they were defunding the “abortion industry.” Researchers at the University of Texas at ...

Get Ready, Obama Planning To Release 17 More Islamic Terrorist Dec 21, 2016
By law, the Pentagon must notify Congress 30 days before a prisoner transfer, a deadline that Obama made on Monday. In September, Obama's administration informed the American people that two more Islamic terrorists released from Guantanamo Bay returned to the battlefield to fight against the United States.
