No AC ... How Do You Handle The Heat

Posted: Jun 9, 2015

I have almost zero tolerance to heat plus that annoying pin and needle thing happens if I get too hot. And anything over mid seventies is hot.

Eighties today, fans, fans and fans! That is about the best that can be done. It gets really nice in the evening or early morning hours. =)

So, what do you do?

The car does have AC and it is AMAZING! It is a life saver! (never really had one until last year)

Cool showers, and drink lots of ice water - sm

Neither hubby or I can tolerate heat, and anything over the very low 70s is too hot for us.

We have been fortunate that we don't need to live without A/C. Otherwise, all you can do is keep the fans going, take cool showers, and drink lots of ice water.

I grew up in Portland , Oregon - and ...

I remember the hot sticky days with no air conditioning . We lived in an upstairs apt . & had no fans , we kept the windows open. Where I live it can get in the 90's + in the summer . 80's here is comfortable. Drink lots of water , do your outside work in the morning or evening .

In the olden days ... - sm

folks sat bowls of ice in front of fans for a small zephyr of cool.

Can you visit your library, etc., during the hottest times of day?

Also, powder or cornstarch on your body will absorb moisture to keep the stickies away.

I didn't have a/c til my son was almost 3. Thankfully, I've had it ever since. I have some asthma now and would be in trouble without a/c.

Many things to do--sm - anon

We do not use any artificial cooling (no ac or swamp cooler). Unfortunately, the ac in my truck is broken, too. Most days we can hack it fine and some days are miserable.

I open windows early in the morning, when the air is coolest. Later as it warms up, we shut the windows on the side that is getting direct sun and we close curtains or blinds on those windows. We keep fans on. If I have to bake, I try to do it in the morning. On the hottest days, I try not to add heat to the house by cooking. That means grilling, salads, or putting the crockpot outside.

Of course, cold drinks help as do ice pops, fudgecicles, etc. I try to limit activity during the warmest part of the day which seems to be a great time to take a nap and a good excuse not to fold laundry. Sometimes letting laundry air dry in a room that I am in helps (because I am in a dry climate, if I was in Florida, it obviously would not help).

I also dress for the weather. Sundresses, loose skirts, etc. No jeans. No socks. I only say that because I sometimes have to tell the kids to use their brains and not wear those things when they are hot.

I do remember when I was nine months pregnant (being fat and fluid overloaded), in July, living near Palm Springs, CA with our a/c broken. My favorite then was to take a shower and then stand my naked self in front of a fan. That felt soooo good. Good luck.

Use the cool evening air - marge

We use the evening air to cool the house down. In the a.m. when the temps start rising we shut the house up tight as a drum. We have blinds on each window and draw those to keep it dark and cooler. We have ceiling fans running in the correct direction. Not sure if this is a possibility (depends on your furnace) but we run just the furnace fan. It circulates the air from the basement through the ducts and keeps the house really nice. :)

Good luck. I HATE being hot. :(

Can you get a window - air conditioner

[ In Reply To ..]
or better yet, a portable air conditioner to move from room to room with you? They're in the $300-400 range at Costco (not sure what they cost elsewhere), but if you cannot tolerate the heat, well worth the expense.

No AC - Cool chick

I swear by window fans. I use one in the evening in our bedroom and it pulls the cool air in. It really helps. Although it gets hot during the day at times where I live (inland So Cal), it virtually always cools down nicely in the evening. It doesn't sound like a big thing but believe me it works.

I feel for you! - sm

If you cannot afford even a small window or portable AC unit, try getting one of those little hand-held fans with the reservoir. Fill up the reservoir with ice water. Turn on the fan, and then spritz yourself while the fan is on. Also if you have a very lightweight cotton shirt, wearing it wet while sitting in front of a large fan can cool you off very nicely.

I hope you can find a way to stay cool. Every year when the warm weather arrives, I say a prayer before I flip the switch for the AC, hoping it still works.

If you have an attic or upstairs - Hot air

[ In Reply To ..]
Vent out the hot air from the attic or upstairs. Insulation between the living area and attic will help keep the main floors cooler. I would draw cool air in through the lowest level on the coolest side of the house and exhaust out the hot air from the highest part of the house. Keep house closed up during hot afternoon hours, drapes closed, and no oven or stove top cooking. We put in a whole house fan in the roof and really cooled off the whole house for $100.

My A/C broke on summer over the weekend - and I went to lots of cheap

movies and spent time sitting in chairs at the mall reading. At home I would soak a towel in cold water and put it over me (clothesless) to get to sleep at night.

I'm going through the same thing now with my a/c out. In addition to all the measures mentioned above, I take a clean dish cloth, wet it down, wring it out, and place it in the freezer. Within minutes, I have a wonderful, icy cloth to drape around my neck. I do the same with my dog's bandanna. In addition, I periodically drop a few ice cubes in his water bowl.

I've heard Whoopi Goldberg exclaim the wonders of a bandanna or cloth soaked in Seabreeze and draped across the back of neck.

Keep cool, fellow MTs!!

Anybody Else Here NOT Running The Heat?Dec 06, 2011
Last year I discovered that I could save a lot on my winter electric biill by not running the central heat.  (I live in southern Arizona, and our winters are very miild.) I sleep in a fleece Sofa Sack and fleece socks.  Most nights a lightweight fleece blanket on the bed is just fine, but last night was supercold and tonight will be as well.  A bulky quilt or comforter is not what I'm into (there are space considerations too).  I am looking at either a portable spa ...

I Have A Thanksgiving Emergency! My Electic Oven, Which Is Ancient Will Not Heat Up Past 250 DegreeNov 21, 2011
And I am cooking Thanksgiving dinner for 15 people.  I purchased a 21-pound Turkey and a ham and I am freaking out!  I have figured out that I can cook the ham in my big crock pot.  The turkey, however, I'm not sure about.  I am wondering about one of those electric turkey roasters, like an Oster or Hamilton Beach at Wal-Mart, but can one of those handle a 20 pound turkey?  I've never used one before, but I've heard the turkey comes out pretty moist with t ...

I feel so stupid.  I just had an interview for a job and met with two different people.  The first person I have her name and e-mail address but the second person I only have her first name and forgot to get an e-mail address for her.  How would you go about getting this persons e-mail in order to send a thank you note?  As I was driving away I realized this and I feel absolutely ridiculous.  I thought about waiting until tomorrow and then calling the main desk and askin ...

I am looking for opinions on what you would do if the following happened to you.  I have suffered from a rare medical condition since 2001.  Initially I underwent an operation to remove a pituitary adenoma and within a year of that had to two revascularization procedures (STA-MCA bypasses) due to my internal carotid arteries being occluded from an inflammatory process (the rare medical condition--lymphocytic hypophysitis) in the pituitary area.  Due to the devl ...

My family and I are going on vacation with my sisters and their husbands next week - 4 couples and 4 kids.  I love getting together with my sisters because we don't do it often enough.  The sister who arranges these things is so excited about the trip.  She has a heart of gold and I only want to please her, but I am dreading it because of her husband.  He is very nasty, says very inappropriate things in front of my children, and frequently makes snide comments about me a ...

I would like some opinions as well as how you handle the below situation. My husband and I are very involved with friends, and we do a lot of dinners at one another's house. Often, it's just my husband and I and just one other couple. Two of the couples in the crowd have a viewpoint that we are a guest in their house, and we are not to help clean up. I understand that, but with their viewpoint, hubby and I feel we are staying too late because they still have to clean up, which could ...
