Anybody else here NOT running the heat?

Posted: Dec 6, 2011

Last year I discovered that I could save a lot on my winter electric biill by not running the central heat.  (I live in southern Arizona, and our winters are very miild.)

I sleep in a fleece Sofa Sack and fleece socks.  Most nights a lightweight fleece blanket on the bed is just fine, but last night was supercold and tonight will be as well.  A bulky quilt or comforter is not what I'm into (there are space considerations too).  I am looking at either a portable space heater or one of those electric wrap thingies (like an electric blanket but smaller I think).  The wrap may be a bad idea because I may never want to get up in the morning, LOL.

Any ideas, suggestions/feedback on space heater versus electric wrap? Thanks.

I live in the Northwest and swore I'd use the heat sparingly this winter, but I'm crumbling already and am sitting here with the heat on. I'm wearing a sweat shirt and am still too cold. This old house is pretty drafty though. I can actually feel cold air swooshing around my feet. It's about 35 outside now.

Ceramic Heater - ADK MT

I live in the northeast in the Adirondack Mountains and we get some brutal winters here. My house has the old radiators and an oil furnace which is expensive. Three years ago I purchased from our local Walmart two ceramic heaters made by Lasko. They are twice the size of the smaller box ceramic heaters and put out a lot of warmth. They can be run on low or high. I have a 1565 square foot home and run one upstairs outside the bedrooms and one down in the living room. My oil furnace will not kick on until the outside temperature drops down to about 25 degrees or less. I have done a lot to my house to help insulate it by putting plastic on the basement windows. As this is an older house any little bit helps to seal up the house for the winter months.

Lasko Oscillating Ceramic Heater (movable air heater) model #6410. Paid $35 each. They can also be found on-line at WalMart. I used an electrical portable space heate before and this is much more economical.

Is this it? - ChillyWillie

Hey, thanks so much for the recommendation! It sounds like a great little heater except the beeping would annoy the heck outta me. My CrockPot does that too, and I can't stand it!!

I have a Lasko ceramic oscillating heater too... - blondie

Last year my central heat went out, so until I got it fixed I bought one of these at Home Depot. It is great! It puts out a lot of heat. I could put it in my office and shut the door, and I stayed very warm. My office was a small bedroom, but it kept it warm. They are great heaters.

We burn wood - sm

We have a fireplace insert, which does pretty good but not quite enough to keep the furnace from kicking on. We cut our own wood so it really helps keep the propane cost down. It is getting very expensive to heat the home anymore.

funny story. Last year, my neighbor came over and threatened to call a lawyer on us because of our fireplace smoke. LOL Live in Northern Michigan and most people burn wood. Told them they should move to another planet.

We live in the south and had several dead and dying - trees on our property when we bought it.

Have not turned on the furnace yet this year and I keep the house very warm because I am always cold. No need for a fire today, though, because it was 70 degrees outside. I LOVE the warm climate!

No AC ... How Do You Handle The HeatJun 09, 2015
I have almost zero tolerance to heat plus that annoying pin and needle thing happens if I get too hot. And anything over mid seventies is hot. Eighties today, fans, fans and fans! That is about the best that can be done. It gets really nice in the evening or early morning hours. =)So, what do you do? The car does have AC and it is AMAZING! It is a life saver! And I am cooking Thanksgiving dinner for 15 people.  I purchased a 21-pound Turkey and a ham and I am freaking out!  I have figured out that I can cook the ham in my big crock pot.  The turkey, however, I'm not sure about.  I am wondering about one of those electric turkey roasters, like an Oster or Hamilton Beach at Wal-Mart, but can one of those handle a 20 pound turkey?  I've never used one before, but I've heard the turkey comes out pretty moist with t ...

Who's Running The TSA? No One, Thanks To Sen. Jim DeMintDec 29, 2009
(More Republican obstructionism and delay. They'd rather destroy the country than cooperate with Obama.) WASHINGTON — An attempt to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day would be all-consuming for the administrator of the Transportation Security Administration — if there were one. I recently started a running program and I love it.  I have had arthroscopic surgery on both knees, left knee 2 years ago, and right knee in 1998 and then again in 2009.  I have tried to take really good care of my knees, but really have been wanting to run for quite awhile now so just decided to do it, because I'm 52, I'm menopausal and gaining weight whereas I've never had a problem with that before, and just for my mental well-being.  I don't do the high-imp ...

Jeb Bush Said He Was Running For PresidentMay 28, 2015
I know it is really difficult for Republicans to realize this, but you don't get to play both sides of the line and get away with it, at least in this much of the limelight. By not declaring his candidacy, Bush is skating a fine legal line. All of those things just mentioned would be violations of campaign finance laws, because an official candidate is not allowed to coordinate with their Super PAC or accept any individual donation over $2,700 per election. So by not “officially ...

Obamacare Funding Running Low For Patients Feb 16, 2013
Tens of thousands of Americans who cannot get health insurance because of preexisting medical problems will be blocked from a program designed to help them because funding is running low. Obama administration officials said Friday that the state-based “high-risk pools” set up under the 2010 health-care law will be closed to new applicants as soon as Saturday and no later than March 2, depending on the state. But they stressed that coverage for about 100,000 people who are now enrolled ...

This same dynamic is playing out in most states. Second, of course, is nasty old government "interference" to encourage agribusiness's transition to proven means of growi ...
