Medicare supplements

Posted: Mar 21, 2016

Does anyone here have Medicare supplement (MediGap) or Medicare Advantage Plan and are you happy with it?  My Medicare policy start 04/01 and I have no idea what kind of supplement to get.  Thanks for any info.

Insurance consultant. I am sure no matter where you are, they have one locally who will go through all of the available option plans with you and explain them in detail so that you can make an informed choice. That was the name of my consultant... Informed Choice. It really helps clarify things and you can find the best plan for you. Good luck.

Agree! Get some help. I went with Humana via an agent sm - nm

I became eligible for Medicare 3 years ago. I pay $250 a month for supplemental insurance. I have a friend that has been on Medicare for 2 years and she did not purchase a supplemental plan. Her copays and final bills are much, much less than mine. In addition to the $250 a month I pay for supplemental insurance, my copays are $25 for primary care, $40 for specialists, and I usually get billed at least $50 per visit. She pays $15 copay, even at urgent care, and usually doesn't get any other bills. Sometimes I feel like I am punished for having supplemental insurance. BTW, I got my insurance through a consultant. I think they are on the side of the insurance companies, so they probably won't help you much on the decision whether or not to get supplemental insurance, but just which one is right for you.

Maybe it - is determined by state...

but I have no premiums for supplemental insurance, and I surely would not have accepted one for $250 a month either. And yes, some of these consultants are paid commission by the insurance companies if they sell a policy from that particular company. My copays are in line with yours. If your friend has no supplemental insurance, Medicare will not cover some things at all. She is walking on thin ice not having coverage. But again, there are plans out there that require no premium whatsoever. You just have to look. but again, it may be different by state. That I am not sure of.

I only have the part of Medicare I am required to take, - part of Medicare picking up on hospitalization

if there is any part of the bill after my private insurance does not pay. I have a question though, is Obamacare a supplement to Medicare because I think that might be a cheaper way if you are needing something. I have a friend who was laid off from dock work and she got Obamacare and the cost is a big fat 0 for her. I just do not know if it works with Medicare though.

In answer - to your question

no. obamacare does not work with Medicare, thank god!!

If you have private insurance, as well as Medicare, then you probably would not need supplemental insurance, as your insurance company is billed first, and then Medicare covers whatever they cover of the bill. You may be left with some residual to pay.
Only part A required person. I do not need a - supplement on any medical

costs, my private insurance is PPO and pays most everything, but for me if I did need a supplement and had to pay $250 a month plus all the other the OP has to pay and Obamacare was free, that would be idiotic not to take the free instead of paying, but then I guess some people just so dead set against their own President, as my mother used to say, cut off your nose to spite your face.
If you're on Medicare you can't...sm - Anon

participate in ACA health insurance BUT you can sign up for Medicare and keep insurance from your employer until such time as you stop working, THEN, you can purchase a Medicare supplement plan to enhance your plan B or sign up for a Medicare Advantage Plan. It's either one or the other. OR you can stick with the straight B only without a supplement, but be prepared to pay a lot out of pocket because it doesn't cover very well.
To add to my post above...sm - Anon

If you opt for a Medicare B supplement, you also have to purchase part D (drug plan). If you decide to do an Advantage plan, most of them include part D (drug plan), so you don't need to purchase it separately.
I have private insurance but Medicare says you HAVE - to have part A (but no cost to me)
[ In Reply To ..]
I have no Medicare coverage other than the no cost part A. I do not want Medicare. I have private through my husband's job. Being as he is younger, he has quite a few years to go before he reaches full retirement age and thus eligible for Medicare himself. Until then I will just stay on his plan.
Yes that's right...sm - Anon

You can sign up for Medicare and take only part A (hospital), and stay insured with your spouse through his employer's plan until such time as he leaves work/retires, THEN you can pick up B as is, or get a supplement to B and part D (drug plan). You can also get an Advantage plan which is different than a supplement. I have mine through BCBS. They had about 6 different ones to choose from with varying costs from from $0 to around $250 a month in addition to your plan B cost. My total monthly cost is around $185 and includes drugs with very reasonable copays like $4 generic, $45 brand, etc. The other copays for doctor visits and hospital stay are also very reasonable. I don't think $185 a month for good health insurance is bad at all.
I'm also going to go with BCBS. It's the most - affordable for me, and they also - S/M

have a perk called "Silver Sneakers", where I can belong to not just one, but SEVERAL local gyms for free! I'm not a gym-rat, but have issues with OA and since losing my former 24-Hr. Vitamins And SupplementsSep 06, 2010
I supplement my diet with several different vitamins. (A, B-complex, C, D, Fish oil, and E). I had a Dr. visit last week and my physician told me that he does not believe in taking vitamins. He said it was a big scam. What is your opinion. Would you trust this doctor? Do you take supplements? Am I taking too many? ...

Any Suggestions For Natural Supplements For Menopause Symptoms?Nov 11, 2015
I'm 48 and started having weird periods about six months ago.  Kind of figured I was gearing up for menopause.  Ive had a couple of hot flashes, but and just irregular bleeding, but that's about it.  Well, I skipped my last couple of periods and thought great I'm done with periods.  Got my period a couple of days ago, and whew boy did I feel like crap.  I have been emotionally wrecked for two days - crying at the drop of a hat and I've just felt ...

Why I Want My Medicare Left AloneMay 06, 2011
I don't know if any of you do this, but every time I forget something, like part of the alphabet or my phone number, I am terrified that I have the beginnings of Alzheimer's Disease. I have no doubt that I can take care of myself right now while I'm in great health, but what if... ...

Expanding MedicareDec 08, 2009
Senate Democrats are discussing the idea of expanding Medicare by lowering the age at which the elderly could enter the government-run insurance program, Democratic sources on the Hill tell the Huffington Post. The proposal would lower the age of eligibility for Medicare from 65 to 55, though an age limit of 60 has also been suggested. Crucial details -- such as the timing of the implementation of such a reform -- were not provided due to the sensitivity and ongoing nature of the deliberations. A ...

CBO: MEDICARE FIX THROWS HCR IN THE REDMar 20, 2010
The CBO has now said that the "Medicare Fix", which the Democrats are trying to pass separate from the HCR bill, throws their scheme into the red, eating up all of the claimed $200 billion in deficit reduction and instead adding $56 billion more. For those who don't know, there are programmed reductions in Medicare reimbursements to physicians that are supposed to "kick in" automatically, and every year Congress passes a bill to reverse those cuts for the simple reason that such reductio ...

In addition, they said, premiums fell by an average of 7 percent this year, much higher than the 1 percent the government projected a year ago. * Fraud: Under the newly reformed health care laws ch ...

Patiens And Groups Sue MEDICAREJan 20, 2011
Montpelier, VT: (AP) Five New England residents and five national health care advocacy groups filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the federal agency that administers Medicare, saying it had illegally reduced or denied benefits to thousands of patients with chronic health problems. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Burlington, named Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius as its sole defendant and took aim at an arm of Sebelius' agency, the Centers for Medicare and ...

People Really Need To Educate Themselves About Medicare (sm)Aug 19, 2012

Medicare End Of Life SpendingDec 11, 2012
Original thread is getting pretty far down and I am curious because I have yet to hear a politican other than Mitch Daniels bring up this issue without screaming about killing grandma or using death panels.  When Medicare spends 25% of it's resources on end of life treatment then it's time for everyone to discuss this issue in a reasonable fashion.  Personally, and as one who is on Medicare, I feel that everyone who applies should have to include their advanced directives whi ...

Medicare Improperly Paid Jan 24, 2013
"Illegal immigrants and prison inmates received more than $120 million in Medicare services from 2009-2011 despite federal law that makes them ineligible for the program, according to two new reports from the HHS inspector general. But often, Medicare’s databases aren’t up to date, and improper payments go o ...

Question About Soc. Security & MedicareDec 16, 2016
To those of you who are single, receiving Social Security and Medicare, do these numbers seem too high to you?  The amount taken out of my monthly social security check for Medicare is $140.  The amount taken out monthly for Part B insurance is $73, and for drug plan is $21 (total of $94 a month).  So each month $234 dollars are being taken out of my social security check to pay for health care.  Does this seem excessively high to you, or is this a normal-sounding amount? ...

Medicare Supplemental Ins. For Disabled Under 65?Oct 23, 2015
I wonder if anyone who is disabled and under age 65 has been able to find Medicare supplemental insurance that is affordable?  According to the Medicare site, only 29 states force insurance to accept you for supplemental insurance and I don't live in one of them.  What I'm considering is dropping Medicare coverage to get insurance through the Affordable Care Act, but not sure there is anything affordable.  I did have a full policy that's cost was $450 a month, but ...

Reasons Not To Dismantle/Destroy MedicareApr 12, 2011
I was just thinking about the long-term ramifications of dismantling or changing Medicare so that it does not cover healthcare needs of the elderly. One important one that originally came to mind was that many people who are now in nursing homes or assisted living won't be able to afford it. They will need to move in with their children unless the children can afford to pay the difference, of course. That will come out of the college fund for families in some case when there just isn' ...
