The ACA and Medicare - an article on

Posted: Jun 30, 2017

I saw the "disagreement" below about Medicare.  Really didn't want to get involved in that but here is what happened to Medicare.  I did already know it added coverage for mammograms but here's some more.

;

Here's another article - on Medicare

[ In Reply To ..]
and the ACA.

Some don't understand that Medicare is - not in the ACA.

[ In Reply To ..]
According to the articles, you cannot join an insurance plan through the ACA. It also did not cut benefits but enhanced them. There were cuts but they actually helped the Medicare recipients, helping to get rid of fraud. I know people who get Medicare and feel it is better with the changes Obama actually made to Medicare with enhancing some of the benefits.

Obama took money from Medicare to pay for Medicaid. - Once again pitting groups of people

[ In Reply To ..]
against each other.

Not true. The articles posted above explain it clearly. - nm

.
Yes, it is true. The payroll tax hike on Medicare is redirected - to pay for Obamacare. In addition, the
[ In Reply To ..]
tax on medical devices makes it more expensive.

Even the CBO reported this. If you believe that 22 million are going to "lose" health coverage, then this must be true as well.
I remember back in 2014 when the Democrats realized the - Medicare cuts they voted for were
[ In Reply To ..]
scheduled to go into effect, they all panicked. The 700 billion was being used to finance Obamacare.

Here is Obama admitting the $700 billion in Medicare cuts.

TAPPER: One of the concerns about health care and how you pay for it: One third of the funding comes from cuts to Medicare.

OBAMA: Right.

TAPPER: Are you willing to pledge that whatever cuts in Medicare are being made to fund health insurance, one third of it, that you will veto anything that tries to undo that?

OBAMA: Yes! I actually have said that it is important for us to make sure this thing is deficit neutral, without tricks. I said I wouldn't sign a bill that didn't meet that criteria.
This has to do with Obamacare, not Medicare, but in my region - in Indiana we are called the orthopedic
[ In Reply To ..]
capital of the world. We have a lot of medical device companies like Biomet, DePuy, Zimmer, etc.

The law’s inclusion of a 2.3% excise tax on medical devices has affected our regional economy and penalized local companies. So in a way, this does affect Medicare because the costs are higher for hip/knee implants, stuff like that.

In 2013, Obamacare’s 2.3 percent tax on medical devices went into effect.

Fortunately, the medical tax was temporarily suspended at the beginning of 2016, so some of these manufacturers can resume a portion of research and development.

Some of these employers stopped hiring. My son works at Zimmer. He said now they are starting to pick up again.
There you go, they fixed that problem - Nobody said it was perfect

and needed fixes. That is what the republicans should be doing, trying to fix things in the ACA, not destroying it. If people had just not started calling it Obamacare, it might not seem so bad to those who don't like him. I call it the ACA. That really is what a lot of the problem is; they want to kill anything Obama did whether good or bad.
Oh please...to the left this is just about maintaining - Obama's legacy - Obamacare.

Whatever you want to call it.

Why I Want My Medicare Left AloneMay 06, 2011
I don't know if any of you do this, but every time I forget something, like part of the alphabet or my phone number, I am terrified that I have the beginnings of Alzheimer's Disease. It just happened again a few minutes ago. I was trying to file something alphabetically and momentarily forgot my ABC's or my OPR's in this case. I have no doubt that I can take care of myself right now while I'm in great health, but what if... ...

Expanding MedicareDec 08, 2009
Senate Democrats are discussing the idea of expanding Medicare by lowering the age at which the elderly could enter the government-run insurance program, Democratic sources on the Hill tell the Huffington Post. The proposal would lower the age of eligibility for Medicare from 65 to 55, though an age limit of 60 has also been suggested. Crucial details -- such as the timing of the implementation of such a reform -- were not provided due to the sensitivity and ongoing nature of the deliberations. A ...

CBO: MEDICARE FIX THROWS HCR IN THE REDMar 20, 2010
The CBO has now said that the "Medicare Fix", which the Democrats are trying to pass separate from the HCR bill, throws their scheme into the red, eating up all of the claimed $200 billion in deficit reduction and instead adding $56 billion more. For those who don't know, there are programmed reductions in Medicare reimbursements to physicians that are supposed to "kick in" automatically, and every year Congress passes a bill to reverse those cuts for the simple reason that such reductio ...

Medicare SupplementSep 19, 2015
First year on Medicare and realize it sucks.  Will pay for this, won't pay for that.  Looking into a supplement, but there are so many.  I know that the reps from the companies are paid commission, and I honestly don't trust them.  Wondering if any of you "oldsters" can give me any advice.  I know it varies from state to state - just looking for suggestions.  ...

Medicare--Good NewsSep 16, 2011
I wonder is MSM will cover these stories? * Premiums: The nearly 12 million senior citizens enrolled in private Medicare health plans will see their monthly premiums drop by an average of 4 percent while benefits remain stable next year, the Obama administration officials announced Thursday. In addition, they said, premiums fell by an average of 7 percent this year, much higher than the 1 percent the government projected a year ago. * Fraud: Under the newly reformed health care laws ch ...

Patiens And Groups Sue MEDICAREJan 20, 2011
Montpelier, VT: (AP) Five New England residents and five national health care advocacy groups filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the federal agency that administers Medicare, saying it had illegally reduced or denied benefits to thousands of patients with chronic health problems. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Burlington, named Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius as its sole defendant and took aim at an arm of Sebelius' agency, the Centers for Medicare and ...

Ryan's Medicare PlanAug 14, 2012
. . . the federal government's. If it's good enough for them . . . The NYT said Ryan has the same plan for Medicare as federal employees enjoy (published 04/18/2011). Also, Ryan wrote this: "Starting in 2022, new Medicare beneficiaries will be enrolled in the same kind of health care program that members of Congress enjoy." His op-ed about this was published in the WSJ. Sounds good to me! ...

People Really Need To Educate Themselves About Medicare (sm)Aug 19, 2012

Medicare Savings--Way To Go, ObamaOct 04, 2012
WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Ninety-one people including doctors, nurses and other medical professionals were charged criminally after an investigation of Medicare fraud that involved $430 million in false billing in seven cities, officials said on Thursday. It was the government’s second big raid in recent months after a similar investigation in May involving $452 million in possible fraud in Medicare, the health program for the elderly and disabled. The accusations include billing the go ...

Medicare End Of Life SpendingDec 11, 2012
Original thread is getting pretty far down and I am curious because I have yet to hear a politican other than Mitch Daniels bring up this issue without screaming about killing grandma or using death panels.  When Medicare spends 25% of it's resources on end of life treatment then it's time for everyone to discuss this issue in a reasonable fashion.  Personally, and as one who is on Medicare, I feel that everyone who applies should have to include their advanced directives whi ...

Medicare Improperly Paid Jan 24, 2013
"Illegal immigrants and prison inmates received more than $120 million in Medicare services from 2009-2011 despite federal law that makes them ineligible for the program, according to two new reports from the HHS inspector general. "The issue, according to the reports, is timing. When Medicare is alerted that someone is incarcerated or undocumented, its contractors help prevent payments from going out the door. But often, Medicare’s databases aren’t up to date, and improper payments go o ...

Question About Soc. Security & MedicareDec 16, 2016
To those of you who are single, receiving Social Security and Medicare, do these numbers seem too high to you?  The amount taken out of my monthly social security check for Medicare is $140.  The amount taken out monthly for Part B insurance is $73, and for drug plan is $21 (total of $94 a month).  So each month $234 dollars are being taken out of my social security check to pay for health care.  Does this seem excessively high to you, or is this a normal-sounding amount? ...

Medicare Supplemental Ins. For Disabled Under 65?Oct 23, 2015
I wonder if anyone who is disabled and under age 65 has been able to find Medicare supplemental insurance that is affordable?  According to the Medicare site, only 29 states force insurance to accept you for supplemental insurance and I don't live in one of them.  What I'm considering is dropping Medicare coverage to get insurance through the Affordable Care Act, but not sure there is anything affordable.  I did have a full policy that's cost was $450 a month, but ...

Reasons Not To Dismantle/Destroy MedicareApr 12, 2011
I was just thinking about the long-term ramifications of dismantling or changing Medicare so that it does not cover healthcare needs of the elderly. One important one that originally came to mind was that many people who are now in nursing homes or assisted living won't be able to afford it. They will need to move in with their children unless the children can afford to pay the difference, of course. That will come out of the college fund for families in some case when there just isn' ...

Raising The Medicare Eligibility Age Would Cost Patients About Twice As Much,Dec 06, 2012
"When economists and policymakers worry about the long-term fiscal crisis, what they’re mostly worried about is Medicare. That’s why a persistent idea during this fiscal cliff season is raising the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67. It’s an idea that appears superficially to have many virtues. Bringing the Medicare retirement age into line with the Social Security retirement age seems logical. The change is simple to describe to journalists and the public."  & ...

President Obama Says No To Raising Medicare EligibilityFeb 11, 2013
This is a National Journal (a moderate Washington insider publication) article on the "sausage-making" side of this issue, the maneuvering--not the socioeconomics of it. The people who read this journal also read many others, and it's not the last word on anything, but I thought the "what's going on here?" is interesting as part of an ongoing series of maneuvers. It's worth noting that an eligility age increase could be put right back on the table just as quickly. Also, the "chai ...
