Just curious about being isolated in doing

Posted: Nov 21, 2014

How many of you live an isolated life because of MT and how many have lives/hobbies outside of doing MT at home, not working in-house.  Are you waiting for work that even if you wanted to you can't do anything else.  Are you too poor to do anything outside of the home.  Does your work shift just leave you exhausted and run down you can't do anything else, or your motivation to be outside the home is down the tubes and life as you know it is inside.

I've been doing this at home for almost 20 years, and if I really cracked down on my work I think I could do more outside of the home, but (A) I have no money to do that.  (B)  I am not even motivated to be outside the home.  It truly doesn't even appeal to me to out in the rat race sort of speak.

I'm just wondering what your thoughts are on this!

I also have no desire to be in the rat race and am very thankful to have had an MT job for years.

Do you like to get outside just to pass some time out of the home? Errands, shopping, sightseeing? Anyone have any suggestions on activities that don't take planning or money, just to get out a little?

I just read a piece on Emily Dickenson. The author said she lived a very rich life but did state she was a hermit.

you would have more energy. I live in a cold-weather state and even when it's 17 degrees I go outside and take a long walk.

You may want to make an appointment with your physician to see if an antidepressant might help you.

and I really am thankful for that. I like that I have little interaction with my supervisor, etc. I like to be able to do my job without all the extras that come with dealing with people but I have always been an introvert. I interact with adults still at church, at Wal-Mart, etc but being isolated is one of the things that has kept me in MT work for a long time. Not to mention, isolated from the traffic. Some of my hobbies are reading (much of which is cheap thanks to the library) and gardening which can be rather inexpensive, if one is careful. I am content.

No Money Needed - see msg

You don't need money to not feel isolated.

Take yourself for a walk or on a picnic on your off hours. Get involved in community activities. A lot of communities have exercise classes, water aerobics, etc, for almost nothing---couple of dollars maybe.

If you are religious or want to become religious, join a church.

and live alone. I work from noon to 9 p.m. I have to get out of the house everyday to see and interact with other people or I start to become depressed and will also have less desire to actually go out of the house. Three mornings a week, I go to pool exercise classes. Other mornings, I go to a breakfast restaurant where I know a lot of the other patrons at the counter and have breakfast and we chat with each other. I also know all of the waitresses, so if there's no one else at the counter, I talk to them. On my days off, I shop and get errands done and wherever I go, I talk to people. A few girlfriends and I will go to a movie and have something to eat either before or after the movie. I see my son and 2 grandsons about once a month on one of my days off. The key is to plan things to get yourself out of the house.

What I do - daily

[ In Reply To ..]
I ride my horse every day which gets me out in the sun, exercising, talking with fellow riders, etc. (I bought the horse when I was making double what I make now when working as an IC and it's now a month to month struggle to afford).

I like to troll around thrift stores as well where I can just spend a couple of dollars but it satisfies my love to shop.

I craft and sell what I make so that satisfies my creative side and it's a little extra money.

I love working at home. My coworkers are my cats and dog. I am mostly a homebody type person though.

I dread the thought of maybe having to work outside of home after 20 years. Been working at home since my son was born.
I love working at home but have the ability - to travel and have loads of fun otherwise

I have a friend who has 3 kids and right now am planning for some winter activities, going to a Christmas parade, going to a circus and then to a local park for Christmas lights. Two of these are no charge, the circus, a small one, is $10.00 a head. Also planning an outing where there is sledding for the kids, S'mores outside over a fire pit and carnival rides. Am planning a dinner out with my daughter. This is something we do every month, choose a new restaurant and try out. Am already planning for next summer's vacations. Want to go to Cape Cod, another trip to Colorado and then to Myrtle Beach. My husband travels some during the week and it is just me and my 4 kittycats then. He is home on the weekends and about 2 nights during the week. When he is here we spend lot of quality time together. I have a great life, could not want for more. I sometimes spend the afternoon at the movies, just whatever appeals to me.

Your post got me thinking. That's dangerous. LOL. Seriously, have you thought of looking to see if there are pet food pantries in your area that have horse feed or hay? I don't know if that is the help you need, but I googled quickly and got a couple hits, such as an organization in Oregon that provides a 1 month supply of hay, another one in Georgia that provides grain and pellets.
No worries. . . - daily
[ In Reply To ..]
I have to board my horse and that's the struggle, the monthly board. She's very well fed with good hay. :)

I have her at just about the cheapest place I could find with the best care. I rescued her five years ago from a bad situation and she was a few hundred pounds underweight and she will never be in that situation again. Believe me, I'm prepared to work at Wal-Mart or McDs if I have to!!! My animals are my life!

I also enjoy reading and spend alone time doing that, and my cat Mr. Fred, keeps me company and serves as my office assistant when he's not asking to be let outside or for something to eat. Keeps me hopping.

When I had a good, inhouse, full-time job I - had enough money to do things, -sm

but usually couldn't join my friends to do things or travel much because I could never get the time off.

Now I no longer have any job at all. I have all the time in the world to do whatever I want, but no money, so I still can't do much of anything.

I wish there were a happy medium out there somewhere.

My state of isolation - Hermit Harriet here

[ In Reply To ..]
I hardly leave the house at all. Sometimes it's a couple months before I get out. DH does all the errands (he even started buying my "personal products" and actually picks out my hair color for me - and does a great job selecting a good color) and when I rarely do go to the grocery store I'm thankful he does the shopping. I'm not big into shopping because I never have any money, but when I do need something I order over the internet. I really do not like being around other people. It's not their personalities, its I guess what I would call my "germophobia" LOL. When I'm at the store and hear someone coughing I immedately go the other way. If I'm looking for an item and someone else is looking there too, I stand far away until they are done, or go get other things I need and come back. I cover my mouth and nose a lot when in public. And I especially hate the people in the grocery store who decide to pas gas. Nothing worse than that smell. But I stay at home all the time and I love it. My cats give me the best joy ever. I get out every day and feed the nature and love watching the birds and squirrels. In my off time I watch TV, do a lot of baking, read or look on the internet and watch a lot of comedy YouTube. In fact just came across one of a comedian named Tim Hawkins and he's talking about halloween candy. It was so hysterical I laughed so hard. I just don't get enjoyment from going to do things and just prefer to be at home where I am the happiest. But I do hate running out of work, spending the day checking to see if jobs come in, then when they do come in I'm so exhausted from waiting.

I don't really feel isolated. I do feel like a hermit, but I am the most happiest being here.

,I'm with you on the germaphobia. - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
It is the grossest thing to me to be in a grocery store and have people coughing and not covering their mouth or sneezing. I'm sure most of us here are aware how many feet the germs an travel when one sneezes or coughs. I know it's a natural thing and we all do it, but it's called covering your mouth and nose.

And yes, Walmart is the WORST!! I live in a rather populated area and we have 2 super Walmarts here, both of which are flooded with people on a regular basis. It drives me nuts when I walk in to get a shopping cart and they are out of Sani-wipes or they have the Sani-wipes, but no paper towel to dry with after wiping off the cart or paper towels, but no Sani-wipes.

I especially hate the stores that are not automatic, the ones you have to grab and open with your hands that people are constantly touching day in and day out, 365 days a year, that probably only get washed when it rains outside. And you can't pay me to use a public restroom.

I thoroughly wash my raw fruits and veggies with soap and warm water before putting them in the fridge because you never know who has coughed or sneezed over them while they were still in the grocery store or in the process of them making it to the grocery store; seems I'm more concerned about that than pesticides. I keep a fresh bottle of hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes in my car and filling up, I use one of the paper towels at the gas pump to pick up the nozzle. My husband and kids think I'm nuts, but I don't even like shaking hands with people I don't know.

Illusion of not being isolated - Comfortably numb

[ In Reply To ..]
I've had a home-based business for the last 20 years with people coming to the house all the time and now selling the business to a young couple, so I don't see the people aspect of the business and have gone full time to MT. I'm not out and about much which is fine since I've been happy with my own company (and husband and cat), but reading this thread it dawned on me that I'm quite isolated, but hearing the sound files all day long makes me think that I'm connected to the world when I'm really not. I have noticed that I'm not as interested in the goings-on of friends and family as I used to be, and maybe that's bad. Staying home seems so easy and going out (especially in the cold weather with having to bundle up) just seems like such am effort.

It's too bad being a homebody gets - looked as

[ In Reply To ..]
there's something wrong with the people who prefer home to going out.

Maybe the people that need constant interaction with others and constant stimulation have the problem?;) Can't stand their own company perhaps? Kidding, sort of.

I do admit I'm not a fan of people in general. So many people like to cause so much drama. I'm too old for that nonsense now.

I have a husband, son, parents and sisters, a couple of friends and that's really all I need.

Bottomline, life's short, do what makes you happy!!!

I 100% agree, I happen to enjoy my own company & look forward to - having my alone time.

[ In Reply To ..]
To each their own, but I have to wonder about those who need constant company from others and why the company of spouse and pets aren't enough? Heck I even look forward to the times when hubby leaves the house so I can have my alone time. He is totally opposite of me and always has to be on the go doing something. He and the kids think I'm a hermit. I have a friend who told me I need to get out more and that it's unhealthy for me to be home all the time, really?? I actually found that a little insulting considering home is where I am the most content and comfortable.

Working From Home - LinK

[ In Reply To ..]
I've worked from home for almost 12 years and I first started because I wanted to stay home with my youngest daughter. I do go out and socialize quite a bit. I bowl on Thursday nights to have some time away from the house. I have an amazing best friend. Her whole family is our family's best friends and we do something with them almost every weekend (dinner, movies, just getting together in our respective houses). We have a few other couples that we spend time with also. I know a lot of people don't mind the isolation and don't mind never going out and socializing, but it sometimes makes me sad that they don't have places to go and people to see. I'm happy that I have great family and friends.
