College: Fire professor who forced students to vote for Obama A tenured professor who forced her students to sign pledges that they would vote for President Barack Obama last November should be fired, the collegeâs president recommended. Sharon Sweet, an associate professor of mathematics at Brevard Community College in Florida, is guilty of electioneering, harassment, and incompetence, according to a three-month investigation into her classroom behavior leading up to the November election. The Board of Trustees will hold a hearing on the matter, and then vote on whether to adopt President James Richeyâs recommendation that Sweet be fired. According to a report on the investigation: âProfessor Sweet strongly encouraged or mandated that students from several classes sign a pledge card that stated, âI pledge to vote for President Obama and Democrats up and down the ticket.â She also misrepresented her intentions to multiple students, indicating at various times that she was conducting voter registration for the college, that the pledge cards were non-partisan voter registration forms, and that the pledge was a âstatistical analysis.ââ In the eyes of the college, Sweet clearly created a hostile environment for students, since many feared their grades would be affected if they did not sign the pledge. She remains on paid leave until the board votes to fire her. http://educationviews.org/mental-deranged-professor-forced-students-to-vote-for-obama/ http://dailycaller.com/2013/02/18/college-fire-professor-who-forced-students-to-vote-for-obama/#ixzz2LHyJeaBw;

fyi, post above is not from me! - poster known as doe

interesting coincidence, though.
Can see the problem - OP2

However, the phrase "get over it" is not original. Poster should have just said "get over it" and left off the "doe," thus avoiding wrath and condemnation.
please talk yourself down - doe

I exhibited no wrath, no condemnation.

Time to move on, seriously, move on. It's over, you lost. Live with it. - anon

We lived with 8 loooooong years of G.W. Bush.

This college professor didn't sway the election and is no different than all the radically insane Christian pastors who break the tax laws every political season by telling their sheeple how to vote.

I'd like to hear proof of your claim - sm

re. pastors. From a reputible source, of course.

Now let me see here. - A few names come to mind.

Birther and Obama hater James D. Manning of ATLAH World Missionary Church in NYNY. Huckabee supporter Pastor Wiley S. Drake of the 1st Couthern Baptist Church in Buena Park, CA. GOP devotee Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, recently sued by the FFRF for tax violations. Of course, the legendary now departed Jerry Faldwell "presidential kingmaker." The full-page ad taken out by the anti-Clinton Church at Pierce Creek, clearly stating it was financed with "tax-exempt" donations. Gus Booth of the Warroad Minnesota Community Church. I'm sure that are many more, but I'm a little short on time here.

I'm also not in the mood for source wars, so get to Googling. There are plenty to choose from.

The whole country lost, and wait til Obamacare - takes hold,, a complete disaster ! nm

Well, if she did that, she will be appropriately - fired.

Such behavior is wrong, and also pointless, since whoever signed her "pledge" probably went out and voted for whoever they wanted.

it was a bookmark - doe

While I agree that it's not appropriate to campaign in the classroom in any way, it remains to be seen whether handing out pro-Obama bookmarks is considered "forcing" someone to vote for Obama.

As far as the link that describes the professor as deranged, well...that kind of talk always makes me run to find another source.

Especially when it identifies itself as an "education" publication - BUT

cannot distinguish between adjectives and adverbs in its headlines....does not exactly inspire a great deal of confidence in its content beyond that blatant blunder.

A bookmark? No, it was a voter pledge card - according to report.

That's different.

“Professor Sweet strongly encouraged or mandated that students from several classes sign a pledge card that stated, ‘I pledge to vote for President Obama and Democrats up and down the ticket.’ She also misrepresented her intentions to multiple students, indicating at various times that she was conducting voter registration for the college, that the pledge cards were non-partisan voter registration forms, and that the pledge was a ‘statistical analysis.’”

I don't know what actually took place. Neither do you. Handing out bookmarks that bear the slogan "I pledge..." does not mean students were asked to sign a pledge.

Mind you, I agree that it is inappropriate to hand out political bookmarks of any kind. I just have no evidence that the coercion described in these stories took place. The story itself has been turned into chum for sharks.
Sorry, I'm still not getting where "bookmark" - was even mentioned.

Voter pledge card was.

most websites are referring to the bookmark and pledge as if they are two discrete things. In fact, the bookmark (pictured) bears the phrase "I pledge to vote for Obama...."
Wow, the comments are - so ugly.

I'd hate to see the kinds of things people would write here if it weren't a more moderated board.

You are 'probably' right - there are 'probably' other professors, other people in positions of authority who push the envelope or downright break the law.

I am FAR more interested in the quiet 24/7 GOP-led machine which works TIRELESSLY to oppress the vote- because it knows it cannot LEGITIMATELY win with its current platform.

I am probably right, but google bing it if you dare OP.

If they were required to sign - does that mean

[ In Reply To ..]
it would affect their grade if they refused?

it is not clear that anyone was required to sign anything - nm

[ In Reply To ..]

Sure it was required - sm

All the news sources say that, as well as the students and the principal.

Just Curious About Being Isolated In DoingNov 21, 2014
How many of you live an isolated life because of MT and how many have lives/hobbies outside of doing MT at home, not working in-house.  Are you waiting for work that even if you wanted to you can't do anything else.  Are you too poor to do anything outside of the home.  Does your work shift just leave you exhausted and run down you can't do anything else, or your motivation to be outside the home is down the tubes and life as you know it is inside.   I've been ...
