Curious as to what some of you think

Posted: Mar 28, 2012

about President Obama speaking personally about the killing of Trayvon.  I don't condone what Zimmerman did.  It is my personal opinion that it is kinda hard to say you killed someone in self defense when you were chasing them.  The 911 person told him to stop following him and that he had done enough.  Do I think Trayvon was a saint and never screwed up in his life...no.  As to the President...I don't think he should have gotten involved.  I don't see him giving his condolences to every person who loses a loved one.  I don't see him giving speeches about black on black crime.  I don't see him talking about black on white crime...which happens quite a bit too.  Can someone please explain to me what a white hispanic is?  Zimmerman is of mixed race...but so is Obama.  Do we call him a white African American?  It is also sad that the media doesn't pick up on stories like the 9-month-old black baby who was killed by a bullet from a drive by shooting.  Why isn't that story as important?  Why isn't Obama giving condolences to THAT family and making a big deal about that?

I understand the outrage.  This should NOT have happened at all.  The president should NOT have gotten involved though especially since he didn't know all the facts.  If Zimmerman is guilty, so be it.  I, however, don't think it was a hate crime based on Trayvon's skin color.  Do I think Zimmerman took his neighborhood watch too far...yes.

Now we have The New Black Panther Party pretty much threatening to kill Zimmerman and so much racial tension going on.  I know racism is out there, but what truly gets me is the hyprocrisy of those who cry racism and then turn around and say the most racist and hateful things and think nothing about it.

I think Obama's election has brought the country's unresolved racism to the surface once again. The rise of conservatism has also added to racial tension. Have seen many discussions on how attractive white victims dominate the news stories. To complain when a black victim is newsworthy points to racism. If it had been a red-headed freckled teen strolling through Zim's neighborhood I am certain the shooting would not have occurred. The media took on this study due to the question of no charges being considered. President Obama is tuned in to the national news and I admire him for expressing his sympathy. Finally, anytime New Black Panthers appears in a conversation, I know I am dealing with white anxiety.

Great post, IMO. The real issue here is the way the police handled the situation. I agree that a white teen would likely not have been shot, and if they had, I believe we would have the same outpouring of concern if the shooter were set free.

Check out the latest shenanigans of Fox's shrink on Media Matters. Highlights include psychiatrist said Trayvon did NOT look like Obama's son, Obama is responsible for the incident, etc. Better than the Onion! except loyal viewers dont get the joke.

President Obama's comments were made... - sm

as a result of a question he was asked at the end of a press conference. I thought his response was very appropriate, saying there should be a thorough investigation and expressing his sympathy to the parents. Some people will never agree with anything our President says or does.

I don't think he should have been asked the question in the first place.  Let's be honest - The reporter certainly would not have asked that question to Bush.

When you say, "some people will never agree with anything our president says or does," believe me, it's not that Obama is being singled out.  I don't know of any president who wasn't criticized brutally and put under the microscope practically daily.  The only exception I can think of might have been President Kennedy, but he also had many critics.

On the other hand, I think it's a lose/lose situaton when ANY president singles out one tragedy.  I have my own thoughts about the Treyvon death.  I haven't weighed in on the debate below, since it seems like it's changing on a daily basis with more and more information coming out.  Since we weren't there, we don't know what happened.  And I don't even know if the police know, at this point, what actually happened.  It's irresponsible for the media to try and convict a man before the facts are known.  I can't imagine Zimmerman getting a jury that is not tainted when the media have weighed so heavily on this and even tried to bring the president into the mess.

you don't think he should have been asked... - sm

If you think he shouldn't have been asked the question, you should take that up with the press corps.

The president did not "single out" one tragedy. As you note yourself, every president is put under the microscope; he was asked to comment, and he did.

I disagree with your assessment that the question "certainly would not" have been put to Bush. Why not?

Senseless crime sadly takes place daily. I guarantee you that if the drive-by shooter of the child were apprehended - and then released - we would be hearing about it. I don't think the two tragedies are equivalent despite how horrendous each of them is.

Yet Romney and Santorum have a free pass to comment? - Such high standards

Like with every questionable death there needs to be a real investigation with charges and/or trial if indicated. The President can and should comment on whatever when asked. When I have seen blonde-blue-eyed girls involved in car accidents, I think, "she could be mine." Of course, Presendent would identify with Trevon. To not identify would make him less than human.

The president is black and saw Trayvon as... - sm

as what his son would look like if he had a son. But that is not the whole story. He is a father and like all other parents was grieving for the loss of a child no matter what color or nationality.

I am an old white woman. It so happens that I have two sons five grandsons. Of the five, one's name is Trey (he is 10) and one's name is Traven (he is 16), both names so similar to Trayvon. It cannot imagine how I would feel if I lost either one of them. It could have been any one of us that lost a child and I feel so terrible for his parents. Let's hope that justice will be done. Sometimes I cannot believe that my sons are alive and well and in their 30s and 40s.

Just Curious About JewelryMay 05, 2014
After my divorce in 1994 I started buying my own jewelry second hand primarily at pawn shops, on ebay, and from Craigslist since the retail markuup is 100% to 200% (and don't get me started about my niece-in-law). In any case, I see a lot of diamond rings on Craigslist that people say they have paid a warranty on, keep getting dipped, and have checked regularly every 6 months.
