curious to know whether the politcal junkies

Posted: Jan 21, 2015

have their own affiliations adopted independently of their parents or whether they have stuck to their parents' ideologies for the most part. I'm speaking generally of whether democrat or republican, really...would you mind 'liking' if you 'think' the way your parents do/did or different from... like if you're the same, dislike if you're different, pls. I will do the first one, I am the same as my parents.

Oh and pls don't delete this post, the term 'political junkie' is neither vulgar nor profane. Thank you.

My history:

My parents were kids during the depression and gave FDR credit for not starving to death and bringing them out of the Great Depression.

As a child during the 1960s, I listened to them talking about the civil rights of minorities and how God created everyone equal.

I lost my mother due to cancer that basically bankrupted our family. My father became disabled due to a workplace injury. I had food and a roof over my head due to Social Security disability payments.

With virtually no family income support for college, I went through higher education on scholarships, grants, and loans. Two years of paid community college would have been a godsend for me.

My sister was date raped, was forced to have the rapist's baby because Roe vs Wade had not happened yet. While her life was forever changed and I am glad I have my nephew, I know that this should have been her choice.

Probably because of my growing up, I found myself in an occupation of public health care. I have seen first hand the difference in lives a little hand up can make, whether it is access to reproductive education, contraception, early childhood education, and family health care, drug addiction care, and end-of-life options.

I am now at the age, after working hard all my life, I do not want to lose what I have saved due to a corporate takeover of the US. I understand that most people will end up relying on their Social Security and Medicare to have a basic quality at the end of life.

Yup, I am a Democrat, socialist, progressive, liberal and am proud of it.

Democrat -- very progressive -- but wasn't always - sm

My parents were definitely Republicans, although I hope that if there had been more discussion, they might not have been.

I think they were foreign policy Republicans. They believed in the romance of a STRONG America, but the map of Vietnam was on the back of the kitchen door. Dad watched the troop movements and I could see the pain and confusion as he watched the evening news (or maybe I just hope that was confusion).

I left the nest and went to college. Post-college I determined that education was really what changed a person from being a conservative to a liberal. A lot of the fear was dispelled by studying other cultures and understanding history.

When I arrived at college, 1980, I voted for Reagan absentee. I still have the Time Is Now poster I stole from election night, but I don't display it.

I developed an absolute disgust for Bush, the first. I believe it all started for me with women's rights and the right to choose. I protested his visit to our town, while proudly holding a Pro-Choice sign.

Foreign policy was really getting screwed up at that time also. My first year in college was when the hostages were taken in Iran. Things were beginning to stir for me that there was something wrong with American FP, but I couldn't really put my finger on it at that point.

Ever since it's been Democrat all the way. Worked on both Obama campaigns, attended rallies with Biden and Obama.

But, the parent thing. My father died in the early 1980s, so never really got into politics much with him. My mother, finally, voted for Obama. I really think she finally understood what the point was and that the romance of the Republican party just wasn't cutting it. I know she voted for Obama because she voted absentee, and no, she was not coerced. That simply, would have defeated the purpose.

Very interesting post - and BTW

That poster might be worth something, saw one on Ebay for $45, but I can understand keeping it for posterity.

The right really cannot get enough of Reagan glorification, so it will just keep going up in value, maybe a retirement nest egg?

Yes, future generations - sm

Will look at that poster and say "What the was that all about???" Just like computer programmers will explain to their kids what DOS was.

OP thanks for the two terrific - posts so far about

your lives and ideations. These responses were much better than 'checking boxes.' I didn't know people like the two of you existed on this board--pls post more often! :)

Your statement about education is so true. My first thought when I hear some of the idiocy is, did they go to school or were they 'out' that decade?

I do post fairly often - Democrat-very progressive

Get frustrated with juvenile responses and just don't have anything to say to some of the comments--they are just so out there, there really is no meaningful discussion. I promise to try to stay on point and offer as much convo as I can, and hope to hear from you too, if you are not already one of the present and accounted for.

My thoughts began to develop as a result of college and meeting people who were not "like" me, from my community, looked like me, et cetera. (heck, they weren't all white, they weren't all middle class, in fact some were way upper class, some were Princes and Princesses from foreign countries, some were second generation immigrants, probably not like we think of now, but Middle Eastern and a lot of the conflict areas in Europe from the 60s and 70s). The university I attended is toppping at $50,000 a year now, certainly wasn't then, and I received SS for my father being on SS. I could never attend that sort of college now, and I fear I will never be able to send my children to a college of that sort either. Thus, I am responsible for making sure they understand there are a whole lot of different people and situations out there and they must be compassionate and understanding that it goes beyond the city limits.

On the upside, my 8th grader came home and told me he was pretty sure he had taught the social science class that day, on the subject of the electoral college. He has spent at least 2 presidential elections counting electoral votes with big groups of people, waiting for our man to win, so he understood a lot about it.
OP these are the bests posts ever - lets keep them coming

I haven't stated my background yet--I didn't expect everyone to do this when I started the 'check a box' thing above but I am so glad people have.

I am formulating my bio, too and will post it a bit later...

Thanks again for the wonderful reading this morning about your lives and the changes in thinking some made upon experiencing 'higher education.' (It's nice to know it's doing its job!) It's just wonderful to hear. What a treat! :)

Conversely, I just remembered the unbelievable story of a young woman who transferred from Michelle Obama's room at Harvard in 1982, I believe, no less, because she didn't want a black roommate. She's sorry now, she says... I think that's what's known as, "too little too late!" or "Be careful who you hate!"

That is basically why I quit posting frequently. The nonsensical "cannot criticize a source" business was nuts. The world is flat is not a starting point for a discussion.

Then, there is the one that accuses everyone of "stalking" her if you point out the error of her thinking. Bleh.

the world were so skewed, it was laughable. I didn't lean leftward because of my parents, however. I did so by looking at both options, and deciding that the right was determined to take the country to h*11 in a bucket.

about President Obama speaking personally about the killing of Trayvon.  I don't condone what Zimmerman did.  It is my personal opinion that it is kinda hard to say you killed someone in self defense when you were chasing them.  The 911 person told him to stop following him and that he had done enough.  Do I think Trayvon was a saint and never screwed up in his life...no.  As to the President...I don't think he should have gotten involved.  I don't se ...

Just Curious About Non-MTs On This Forum. SmNov 26, 2012
I saw part of a post the other day where someone said there were posters here who are not transcriptionists. How many are there? Guess I just assumed that everyone who frequented here was an MT.  I am just curious why you are hanging around a political forum that is part of a transcriptionist forum.  Obviously, you are allowed to post here, but just find it odd you would want to hang around with us.  LOL.  It must be boring here with so many other political forums to post on. ...

I'm trying to figure out if there is another side to this that I haven't considered, because I can't come up with a reason.  Why do people need semiautomatics?  Why do people need scatter shot?  I'm trying to get to the bottom of this.  To be extra clear, because there seems to be a cognitive disconnect in some earlier responses to my posts, I am not talking about guns in general.  I am a supporter of your right to bear arms.  I just put an aste ...

Just Curious About JewelryMay 05, 2014
After my divorce in 1994 I started buying my own jewelry second hand primarily at pawn shops, on ebay, and from Craigslist since the retail markuup is 100% to 200% (and don't get me started about my niece-in-law). In any case, I see a lot of diamond rings on Craigslist that people say they have paid a warranty on, keep getting dipped, and have checked regularly every 6 months. Is this some new con by retail jewelers?  Aren't diamonds pretty much indestructable?  What a ...
