I've got a finicky eater. Anybody have any good, finicky kid friendly, meal ideas?

Posted: Sep 8, 2011

She's been this way since she was a baby.  Refused to eat baby food.  I even cheated when she was a baby and put sugar in some of the vegetables, NO GO!

Now she's 10 and she is tiny.  She's not like scary skinny or anything like that.  I'm short and her dad's short, so consequently she's short, but she's built more like my MIL in that she's small boned too.  So looks tiny.  She definitely can't afford to not eat and lately I have had the worst time fixing dinner for her.  I make spaghetti, every kid loves spaghetti, right?  Well, she doesn't want meat in her sauce and half the time, she wants to eat the pasta plan with no sauce at all.

Chicken is a favorite and fried chicken is one of her most favorites, but I refuse to fry chicken all the time!  I keep looking for new and interesting chicken recipes, but feel like I'm in a rut.  Grilled, fried or baked.  She likes beef as in steak, but who can afford to buy steak?  I'd like her to eat more vegetables, but she tells me my green beans taste bland and likes corn on the cob, but that's about it.

She would like it if I let her eat chips and fruit rollups all the time.

;

At my house, they eat what's put on the table or go without. - Yours will eat when she's hungry enough. sm

the kid wont starve, unless you keep coddling her by fixing specifically what she wants. Buy the foods you can afford and make the meals, put them on the table and that's it.

Is it possible to have just a friendly conversation without - Noney

some snide remark from the ever present, resident MTStars malcontents?

I love my children and like to cook and especially like to try new things. I guess that makes me a coddler.

My 10yo boy is also an incredibly poor eater. I am jealous of my friends whose kids just love their veggies. Wish that was the case here.

My mother was like the poster above with her policy of mean -- forcing us to sit there and eat her terrible food. I don't want the legacy of tyranny to continue with my child.

Just keep doing as you are doing. Love is far more important than vegetables.

I dont think its mean - my mom did it

[ In Reply To ..]
And besides LIVER... I lived. I now eat everything, artichokes, brussle sprouts, beets, everything because my mom made me, so I learned to eat right.

I would not make her or anyone eat liver though.

Try this.... - another mamma

I don't have picky eaters myself, so I can't really relate, but I have a few girlfriends who do. Their solution was to get their kids more involved in the cooking process.

So, what if you two went through some cookbooks togther/go on the web and picked some meals out? Not too many, or too fancy! Don't want to overwhelm either of you! Have her help with the whole thing.. go shopping, clean the produce, cut stuff up, put it in a pot, etc. That made a big difference for my friends--their kids were more apt to eat what they made because they were proud of it.

Also, maybe she's just not hungry at the time you have dinner? Maybe she needs to eat earlier, or even later? I do agree with the poster above--don't worry too much, her body won't let her starve. Don't make her a special meal separate from the family to entice her to eat. I make one dinner for everyone and that's it. If you're not hungry at dinner time, fine, but if you're hungry later, you get the same food.

Good luck!

This is an awesome idea and I can't believe I didn't think of this! - Noney

She and I love to bake cookies and cakes together. I never thought about actual meal planning with her and cooking supper. I'm definitely going to try that!

finicky kids end up not getting any of the nutrients they need. I have a sister-in-law who catered to her kids. Her house was like a cafe. She fixed 4 different meals 3 times a day. I told her she was crazy and I still believe she was. She was so afraid her kids would starve if they didn't get what they liked. Our kids ate what was put in front of them and they "learned" to like what I cooked. They became healthy adults for it.

We ate what was on the table or - mthead

[ In Reply To ..]
we got up and fixed our own. I ate a lot of peanut butter sandwiches as a result. Now I'd kill for one of mom's home-cooked meals! Maybe not the liver and onions or salmon croquettes, though...

My son is younger (5), but he won't eat any meat - and he is scary skinny.

[ In Reply To ..]
He weighs 30 pounds and is tiny. The pediatrician told me that it is important to make every bite count. Luckily, my son does like veggies, but he will not eat ANY meat. What we do for this is that he eats a lot of peanut butter sandwiches (on the advice of the pediatrician), we do not limit his fat or sugar, but do not give him tons of candy and sweets, just never feed him light or sugar free foods, he does not drink water, only whole milk (again, we do not give him sodas or sugary juices) and I pack him a protein shake (full sugar variety) in his lunch every day, so that even if he does not eat, he likes them and I know that he will at least get some nutrition. I also usually pack him a protein bar for his snack at school. This is all on the advice of the pediatrician and, although he is small, he is very healthy. As far as dinners, I usually make him eat whatever we eat, but if I make spaghetti, I try not to give him any meat and I only make him eat 3 small bites of whatever meat we have for dinner, just to make sure he tastes it. I have found that occasionally, he will eat the meat without a fuss and says he likes it, just to reject it the next time again.

Steamed edamame? - mthead

[ In Reply To ..]
Even my picky son likes steamed edamame, and I served it at a block party and the other kids were eating it like candy. I also only make the Barilla brand pasta that has the extra protein in it. (Can't think of the name right now). My kids also snack on raw almonds or raw walnuts.

Good for you...nothing healthier than nuts. - Darla

without the meat. One day you'll be thankful he didn't like meat. Meat is the one "food" that is killing all us Americans. You're actually lucky he doesn't like it. Most kids go from the teat to McDonald's. Consider yourself lucky.

Having taken several non-ruminant nutrition - classes, I tend to disagree with you

[ In Reply To ..]
to a point. Although, as a society, we eat WAY too much meat, I think that meat, in moderation, is not a bad thing for your diet, especially if you tend to be very very thin, as my son does. I am also quite sure that he will come around on the meat thing, mostly because it is the most expensive part of any meal and, in typical boy fashion, I am sure that someday, he is going to eat me out of house and home. I do not cater to his eating whims because if I did, he would eat only candy and ice cream. We try to keep his diet healthy with a few treats thrown in here and there and I think we are doing alright, even if he does remain below the 3rd percentile on the growth charts. I am not really sure why everyone seems to believe that bigger kids are better, anyway. Just had some lady yesterday bragging to me that her 2-year-old grandson weighs more than my 5-year-old. So what? My 5-year-old is smart and happy and athletic and healthy. That's good enough for me. :)
Meat is actually... - Darla
[ In Reply To ..]
not good for any of us and I know of several doctors who feel this way because of their many years of training in nutrition. I tend to believe them. In fact, I agree with you. The bigger the person, the more prone to disease. Taller women have the most breast cancer and taller men the most prostate cancer according to statistics. I think your son is probably very healthy because of his desire to go "meatless." You seem to be concerned about this where I would thank my lucky stars. Meat eaters are by far unhealthier than non-meat eaters. The statistics have proven this over and over.
Only those who receive B-complex vitamins - from ruminant animals, but
[ In Reply To ..]
I am really not too worried about his lack of meat, for now. Like I said, he eats a few bites when we do and he gets a multi-vitamin with B-complex (from animal by-products). I really think that you can find doctors to support any theory you want. It is, of course, every person's choice how she feed herself and her family. Hope you have a great night! :D
If it were only a theory... - Darla
[ In Reply To ..]
that would be troublesome but it has been proven in studies over a 30-year period. The China Study details how people in China in different regions get more cancer/diabetes, etc. the more meat that is eaten. Those who susbsist on plant foods are the healthiest and live the longest. The doctors I trust are the ones who treat their patients with nutrition, not drugs. And...meat and dairy have been shown to NOT be health foods. It is your choice to feed your son any way you want. Hopefully, as an adult he will continue to want to forego the meat and continue to stay healthy. ; ) Have a great day!

I've got an absolutely delicious recipe (2) - yum

[ In Reply To ..]
Very easy.

* - Tator Tots
* - Can of french style green beans, well drained.
* - Ground beef (or turkey would be good), browned and seasoned however you like it.
* - Can of cream of mushroom soup, diluted with enough milk to make a gravy.

I used a glass pie plate to make mine, but I'm sure any dish you have would be good.

Spray the bottom with Pam. Spread the tator tots evenly. Spread the green beans over that. Spread the burger (or turkey) over that. Cover with the cream of mushroom soup and bake til hot and bubbly. Maybe 350 for 20 minutes or something like that.

2nd recipe is a side dish I make all the time.

* - 1 can corn, drained well.
* - 1 can french green beans, drained well.
* - 2 cups shredded mild cheddar cheese.
* - 1 cup sour cream
* - Crushed ritz crackers
* - Melted butter (enough to drizzle over top.

Drain corn and beans, mix in the sour cream and cheese. I think I use about 1 cup of sour cream. Mix well. It should have the consistency of cottage cheese. If too watery with sour cream add more cheese, if too dry add more sour cream. Pour into casserole dish, sprinkle crackers on top then drizzle a little butter. You don't need to cover every inch with butter. About half is drizzled and the other half I leave dry and when it bakes it all comes together. I bake it at 350 for about 1/2 hour.

Now, I don't know the health/fat content of these dishes. The corn and bean is a hit with kids and at Thanksgiving my friends daughter said it was the favorite dish.

Yum! - another mom

[ In Reply To ..]
Not fond of mushroom soup at my house but that is something my husband would be interested in trying for work. The corn and bean recipe sounds good right now - and it is after 11 at night! Probably won't try it today but will definitely keep that in mind because corn and beans are my kids favorite too!

I think you could use cream of celery or another creamy type soup - and it would be just as good - nm

Awesome Roast Chicken - I will never make a diff. one

[ In Reply To ..]
A couple of months ago, I swore to Never Again make a roast chicken. Total dry disappointment that took Forever to prep too. Grrr.

I came across this receipe over the weekend though, and just had to try it. Turned out totally Awesome! Better than the rotisserie chickens you can pick up at the store..My 1-yo and 5-yo ate MORE THAN HALF of the chicken between them! So much for leftovers, lol. I'm going to make another one!

Here goes:
1 roaster chicken, about 5-6 lbs.
1 celery stalk, cut into 2" pieces
1 carrots, cut into 2" pieces
1 onion, quartered
Salt & pepper
Garlic powder
1 TB flour
1/3 cup water

Preheat oven to 375. Rinse chicken, pat dry. Stuff birdie with 1 chopped carrot, 1 chopped celery, 1 onion (I had to cut the onion smaller than quarters). Place chicken in roasting pan and salt/pepper/garlic poweder to taste.

Cook for approx 1 1/2 hours. The chicken is done when you can move the leg in the socket.

Yum yum yum! I drizzled some of the pan juices on the plates for sauce, or you can make a gravy out of them.

I served it with brown rice, steamed broc & carrots.

I tried your chicken recipe...sm - Duchess

It was wonderful. By far, the best recipe for a roasted chicken I have ever tried. You got any more recipes you'd like to share? :0

Thank you for posting your recipe.

I had 2 just like that. Get her involved - j

She is old enough to help you plan the meals.

I would pick up the Taste of Home little cookbooks that come out monthly. Usually find them at the check out stand in the grocery store. Take them home, let the kids go thru, pick the meals for the week. If they found favorites, they could always go back and put it on the menu the following week.

With mine, they both liked different things, of course not much of the same stuff either so that was a HUGE challenge but, the more involved they were, the less fight there was at meal time. If they picked it out and helped prepare it, they had to eat it, just like everyone else. Worked out great for me.

You might also find that the time you spend with her choosing the menus, shopping, and even having her help prepare them is great bonding time and she is learning valuable skills at the same time and not just the cooking either... cleaning up before you start, after you finish, planning the meals, learning to comparison shop.

I have a boy too and had him to the same thing even though he would have eaten dog food if I put it on a stick and waved it in his face. Not a picky eater that one but, he still enjoyed spending time in the kitchen with me too.

P.S. - j

Forgot to add... my youngest one was the worst and was skin and bones for a long time. Finally resorted to high calorie bedtime and/or breakfast treats with high protein smoothies.

I get the highest protein content soy based powder, (vanilla is best especially if flavoring with fresh fruit) put half or a whole scoop into a blender with 8 oz of milk and fresh fruit of the kids choice. If its breakfast, we added yogurt. If it was a bedtime snack, she liked to put some vanilla ice cream in it.

sometimes strawberry, strawberry banana, blueberry, blueberry banana, peach, peach and black cherry. cant even list all of her favorite combinations.

That's a great idea! - A once and still picky eater

[ In Reply To ..]
I wish my mom would have thought of that. I'm almost 40 and still picky. I can't stand it when my foods touch each other and I eat very few veggies. I like to cook and try new things, but I can't swallow certain textures. My BFF is a speech pathologist and she says I "have issues" (that said, her youngest son went through a phase where he wouldn't eat anything tan or white~ go figure). Maybe your suggestion can prevent another me.

I have a son too, but luckily he'll inhale pretty much - Noney

anything I put in front of him. He thin too, but not for lack of eating! So I can pretty much let my daughter help me plan the meals and my son will eat whatever she decides.

My little one is a picky eater, or so I thought when I found out how picky one of her friends is :)

Some tips: It takes putting something new on a child's plate around 60 times before they are interested in trying it, so don't give up. Don't make a big deal out of not eating. Continue to encourage and keep putting things on her plate, even the things she tells you she won't eat.

There is nothing wrong with serving her poached chicken 7 days a week if that is her protein of choice.

Keep healthy snacks always available. My picky eater helps herself to: Go-Gurts, sliced cheese, apples, tangerines, stick snack cheese, granola bars. And I keep children's boost type drinks on hand, but she has to ask for those.

She has to sit with me while I eat, even if she isn't eating at the same time or not interested in the choices. She can't leave the table until we (or usually just me) are finished.

One day I was putting some black eye peas (onions and ham bone) in a bowl and she asked for a bite to try it. Her eyes lit up and she said "so THAT's what I've been missing!" and now asks me to make it for her.

It's not uncommon for kids to be particular about their spaghetti, either. My kid's friend doesn't like tomato sauce so his spaghetti is made with "stinky cheese" or parmesan melted onto the pasta. Same thing with burritos, just cheese and lettuce inside.

A lot of kids have more refined tastes that take longer to develop. I don't make meals with a lot of ingredients. Kids want to identify the food items separately until they get older. A great item is shish kabob so they can sort through the layers to get to their favs without feeling one item "contaminants" another.

Wonderful idea about food preparation. Also, my child takes her personal video camera and records her own TV food shows in her room. She'll ask to borrow measuring spoons and cups, cook books, and I let her take dried beans and pasta to put in bowls and on plates. Just having TFN or Cooking Channel on really inspires her interest in food. She loves, loves, loves Giada!

If you really think your child needs a boost, don't skimp on giving her a vitamin. The iron usually boosts kids' appetites.

and you'll wind up with fat, unhealthy kids who will wind up as fat, unhealthy adults. Kids don't know what's good for them. It's up to us as their parents to make sure they get that. This doesn't mean force feeding them carrots and lettuce. We grew up poor and we ate whatever was put in front of us or we went without. Not always a good thing because all my brothers and sisters are now overweight and very unhealthy. As soon as they became adults and made their own money, they made up for the deprivation. However, feeding your kids everything they like isn't always a good thing either. My children had to, at least, take a bite of everything I made. They weren't allowed to refuse anything but they weren't forced to eat a lot of it, if they didn't like it. As a result, today they are all healthy adults with no food allergies.

Will she eat grape tomatoes? - mthead

[ In Reply To ..]
I think every kid goes through a stage where they don't like pasta sauce; mine is going through that stage now. I let him have the plain pasta with a little bit of parmesan cheese on it, but I give him a side of grape tomatoes to eat with it, so he's still getting a veggie.
