Banning Happy Meal toys

Posted: Apr 28, 2010

What do you think of this county's plan?
Happy Meal toys and other promotions that come with high-calorie children's meals will soon be banned in parts of Santa Clara County unless the restaurants meet nutritional guidelines approved Tuesday by the county Board of Supervisors.

"This ordinance prevents restaurants from preying on children's' love of toys" to sell high-calorie, unhealthful food, said Supervisor Ken Yeager, who sponsored the measure. "This ordinance breaks the link between unhealthy food and prizes."

This is a private business. No one is forced to do business with them. I'm always amazed at all the decisions we are allowing our government(s) to make for us. I'd almost be scared if I actually gave a crap.

Yeah, I thought my e-mail addy or IP would've been blocked or something but I tried it and it and guess what? Here I am! I saw my name in a thread on another page and, besides being completely floored anyone remembered me, I thought I should say hi or something. :-D

I've been reading stuff on this website a lot lately and it's a total bummer to see how browbeat everyone is and it's a dang shame. The people who choose to stay anonymous I'm sure are good people. No one wants to hate their line of work on purpose. We all want to be recognized for our achievments and dedication but there all only so many whacks a person can take...and it's not like, in this economy especially, one can just go out and find another job and move on. It is TOUGH out there.

I'm sure all the ugliness isn't on purpose. It's what happens when you beat an animal over and over again, slowly chinking away at any last remaining bit of dignity and spunk. They're bound to become defensive. I've been there...man have I been there.

So, anyway, what was the question again? :-D

Talk about misdirected. It is parents who make the food - choices for their children. NM

I can tell you now that kids do not beg for McD's for the toy. Just like adults, they crave the french fries and the Big Macs and chicken nuggets. I picked up at least 1 toy that was left behind every shift.

As the poster below said, it's the parent's choice what the child eats. Next the govt will tell us what toilet paper to use.

my son totally begs for McDonald's for the toy. The only reason he eats any of his food is so that he can have the toy.

Just another method of control. - IMHO

I get afraid every time I think of the distance we've already come in this regard and how it inevitably will end.

I hope I'm not around to see it personally. Again, JMHO.

I totally agree. Keeping a child from having a toy in a happy meal is not going to make their parents choose to feed their kids healthier meals. It is the parents who choose what goes in their kids mouths (well except for maybe the dirt they eat). I am so dissapointed in what my country is turning into. Not to make this political but this is the type of things that socialist countries do to their citizens and it is getting scary.

Dog Lovers - Toxic Stuffed ToysMar 27, 2010
This was posted on one of my dog lists by a vet.  An owner brought in his dog who was very sick.  The dog had eaten the stuffing from a child's stuffed toy.  The vet did surgery to remove the obstruction, and found the entire intestines were black and all the tissue dead.  The dog died.  The vet tracked down the toy manufacturer to find out what was in the stuffing, and was told they put in a chemical gel pack that acts as a fire retardant. Since kids don't ea ...

Meal SuggestionsFeb 03, 2010
My father-in-law is coming over this month with his family, and then next month my mother-in-law is coming over with her family. They don't come over to our house much, and I wanted to cook for them. I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for company dinners that is kid-friendly. I'm not afraid of cooking, I enjoy it, but usually it is only for my husband and daughter and me. I don't cook for large groups very often. There will probably be about 6-10 people each group.  ...

Meal Planners... Websites?Mar 15, 2010
Do any of you lovely fellow MTs of mine happen to use a meal planner online where you can chose recipes for the week and it will allow you to print a shopping list? My SIL gave me the idea of letting everyone choose a meal for each day of the month, and then she said she only shops for those items for that week.  I thought this was a good idea, but my kids are probably not the best to ask.  They just always eat everything that I put in front of them, but I personally am tired of spagh ...

? About Rice, Plus A German Crockpot Meal. SmAug 04, 2013
Hi all!  First,  I have a question about rice. Has anyone ever had lavender rice?  If so could you describe the flavor of it? I'm a big basmati rice fan, but keep eying the lavender rice also, but it only comes in a rather large package and is pricey. If anyone knows what it tastes like, I would love the feedback. Now, the recipe.  It's for a complete german sauerbraten dinner and is cheap, easy to make, and is fantastic if you are a fan of german cuisine.  1 ...

I've Got A Finicky Eater. Anybody Have Any Good, Finicky Kid Friendly, Meal Ideas?Sep 08, 2011
She's been this way since she was a baby.  Refused to eat baby food.  I even cheated when she was a baby and put sugar in some of the vegetables, NO GO! Now she's 10 and she is tiny.  She's not like scary skinny or anything like that.  I'm short and her dad's short, so consequently she's short, but she's built more like my MIL in that she's small boned too.  So looks tiny.  She definitely can't afford to not eat and late ...

HAPPY DAY!Mar 27, 2011
I love to cook!  Always have.  Since I was young I have collected family recipes, changed them around (or not) and have honed my skills to the point where I have earned the title of "family cook".  I can do it all!  I even make homemade cakes and decorate them for family gatherings.  I have index cards, ringed binders and tons and tons of recipes on random pieces of paper put away in boxes. A couple of Christmases ago I decided that since times are tough and gifts for o ...

I Was So Happy To See This!Apr 21, 2011
This story is one illustrates why government-controlled health care can be a dangerous thing.  The doctors and the government took choice away from these parents and basically said "sorry, your child is just going to die, no tracheotomy for him."  Religious organization from the US stepped in, brought him down here, US docs did the trach, and now he can spent his last days comfortably at home with his parents. One can only hope that never happens here. ...
