Hi all! First, I have a question about rice. Has anyone ever had lavender rice? If so could you describe the flavor of it? I'm a big basmati rice fan, but keep eying the lavender rice also, but it only comes in a rather large package and is pricey. If anyone knows what it tastes like, I would love the feedback.
Now, the recipe. It's for a complete german sauerbraten dinner and is cheap, easy to make, and is fantastic if you are a fan of german cuisine.
1. Get the cheapest beef roast that you can get your hands on, 2 pounds or so depending on family size.
2. Get your crockpot out, slice up a small cooking onion, put that into the pot first. Next rub some flour over the roast and salt if desired. Throw the roast on top of the onions in the pot. Next, in a 2 cup measure or some bowl or whatever put in 2 beef bulllion cubes, 1 cup of water, 1/2 cup of brown sugar and 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar. Mix it up and pour it over the roast in the crockpot. Put the crockpot on low setting and let it cook for 8 hours, then take the meat out of the crock. Save all of the liquid in the crock. Dinner is almost ready.
3. Next take a head of red cabbage, cut up as much as you want of it into pieces, put it into a sauce-type pan, dump some of the liquid in the crockpot into the pan, add a bit of water to the cabbage too, and simmer the cabbage in it for 15 minutes or so.
4. Next, take some of those cheap hash brown patties that they sell in a package, put them into a toaster or whatever to thaw them and crisp them a little.
5. Next, add about 2 tablespoons of flour to the liquid left in the crock to thicken it a bit and then add about 1/4 to 1/2 of a regular sized container of sour cream to the liquid.
6. Put this "gravy" on the meat and "potato pancakes" or on whatever you want to put the gravy on, dish out the cabbage and that is it.
The meat will fall off the fork it is so tender. If you like german cuisine this is really quite nice, the cost is minimal, it is filling, and you've got a gourmet german meal that all in all takes less than 1 hour to make.
