Flea treatment for dogs

Posted: Dec 2, 2011

Hi Everyone,

What kind of treatment works best for your dogs?  My 3 little doggie children are having the darnest time keeping fleas away.  The last treatment I tried only kept them away for about a week or so; can't think of the name, but it's the one you can get at Walmart.  Was thinking of giving Frontline a try . . .

Frontline Plus also - sm

My littlest guy suffered from a flea saliva allergy and was miserable. Vet gave him a steroid shot and it helped immediately.

I use Sentinel tablets which is heartworm and flea treatment all in one oral tablet once a month and also use Frontline once a month topically for my doggie babies and that seems to work great. The Sentinel is suppose to sterilize the fleas keeping them from hatching new ones and the Frontline keeps them at bay altogether so they are double protected and my oldest baby is 8 years old and never had a flea problem and I have 5 of the doggie babies. Of course, those treatments are through my vet. I have never had any luck with the over-the-counter Walmart flea treatment. Best of luck.

I use Frontline Plus on my 2 big dogs and - sm - XXX

and Advantix on my smaller dog (Corgi) who is low to the ground. The Frontline works great on my big dogs but fails on the Corgi. So he gets the Advantix (was using Advantage) and Program too as we just could not get the buggers to die on him last Winter, had the fleas for about 4 months, the combo did the trick though. Luckily no flea infestation in the house despite the corgi sleeping everywhere, under/on beds, the couch, floor, etc. though I did spray flea spray now and then about hoping to kill any eggs or loose fleas about the house. So you need to de-flea the home as well as the dog, wash bedding, vacuum, etc. I am dosing the dogs one last time until Spring this weekend as our weather is up and down right now from the 70s to the 30s.

Google diatomaceous earth. I just bought some. Frontline was making them sick so I had to find something else. It was only $12 with shipping and handling.

I give mine COMFORTIS - IT'S BY MOUTH, SEE MESSAGE - AWESOME FLEA MEDS

I discovered this through my vet a couple of years ago. If your vet doesn't carry it at the office, they can give you a prescription to send off to petcarerx.com or 1800petmeds. I have found that petcarerx.com to be the lesat inexpensive with the best customer service.

There are 2 kinds, one just treats fleas and the name is COMFORTIS.

The other treats heartworms, fleas, and something else. It's name is TRIFEXIS, and this is what I use for my 135-pound dog now.

I have use both and they are WONDERFUL AND THE BEST FLEA MEDICATIONS ON THE MARKET TODAY.

The Frontline and other medications you put on as an oil have become resistant to fleas and do not work.

Good Luck!

I use Vectra 3D - sold only at vets office

and it really does work. Not only does it work, but it lasts the full month until time to apply it next month. It is pricey, but I recently researched products in stores and I'm not paying that much more than I would at a retail store for a lower grade product. I pay about $83 for a 6-month supply. The manufacturer has a coupon, though, and they will send a $10 voucher to your vets' office to use on your next purchase. It is a little less for a smaller dog. My dog is a medium-sized dog.

Thanks Everyone!! nm - Sunshine State MT

I really tried very hard to go the organic route - for fleas because I SM

think that administering this "poison" over and over again cannot be good for them in the long run. Alas, it was just not effective, and I had to go back to Frontline.

Fleas live in environment, ie house, would rather be on dog - than on you. Treat environment, too. nm

There is also a product called Capstar that you can buy without a prescription at any pet store that is great for flea infestations. It starts to work within an hour or so. You can literally give it every day if you need to. However, it is very expensive and so the best use is with heavy infestations and then use something like Frontline when you get the fleas under control.

Flea Bites?!?!Jul 30, 2012
Why all of a sudden am I getting flea bites?  I have had cats for over 16 years and normally every summer about this time, the fleas come.  I treat my fur babies with Advantage, vacuum and wash their bedding, but they go out in the fenced yard and other strays come in, so I know the fleas are a way of life, just try to keep them at bay.  But over the past week or so, I got big, itchy red welts in spots where I come in contact with my cats.  One is on the back of my upper ...

One Dog Vs. Two DogsApr 05, 2013
We have had our tweenie dachshund girl forabout 10 months.  She is almost 2 years old.  She is dearly loved, so obedient and smart and snuggly.  Lately I have been wondering about getting another dog, solely for the purpose of a playmate for her, so she can wrestle and get more exercise during the day.  I work at home so a lot of her day she is in her bed beside my desk sleeping, or she looks out the window at the yard and watches for dangerous folks near our yard (haha!), gr ...

Dogs With Allergies...Feb 23, 2012
My dogs definitely cannot have poultry or corn, and wheat is questionable.  I am trying to find dental chews/biscuits.  I'm using Zuke's Z-bones right now but the problem is that one of my dogs is just biting/breaking it into chunks and swallowing the chunks, not much good for his teeth and gums!  He chews his crunchy dog food and regular treats so I was hoping maybe I could find some dental biscuits of some sort, but everything I'm finding has wheat or chicken ...

Designer DogsNov 16, 2009
I have a plain old garden variety Rat Terrier. Best known as Teddy Roosevelt's favorite, the RCA dog, and a common dog on farms because they're such good little ratters. But we saw two "Designer Dogs" last week that were so funny. One was a Chug (Chihuahua and Pug combination) and the other two were Puggles (Pug and Beagle combinations.) All of them were cute as could be, but when did mixing breeds stop being mutts and start being Designer Dogs? Is it just because a mutt is a result ...

Does Anyone Else Have Dogs That Are Smarter Than Them?Jul 17, 2010
I live in the sticks so don't have passersby, have no friends or relatives so I don't get company, and work 14 hours a day so I don't have a lot of time for my little canine companions through the week.  Therefore on weekends, we kinda hang out together.  This includes taking them to the store when I go grocery shopping and they wait in the car, people-watching from whatever window they choose to gaze out of.  During the heat of summer, though, I leave them home.&nb ...

One Dog Vs. Two Dogs - Update :)Apr 13, 2013
We adopted a standard dachshund today from the humane society.  I found him on Petfinder.com.  We had to drive about an hour away to get him but oh, what a sweetie.  He is only 8 months old but he isn't hyper at all.  Very laid back for a youngster.  (He hasn't even barked once!)  His tail wags constantly and he loves everybody in the family. But best of all, our tweenie dachshund loves him!  She has engaged him in play over and over.  He is stil ...

Itchy DogsFeb 19, 2014
Has anyone tried the new "miracle" drug for itchy dogs, Apoquel? It had remarkable results in Europe, and was finally approved for the US in January. My vet is impressed with it, and says he sees results within 4 hours. This is apparently very safe, and the only possible reaction is diarrhea which quickly resolves after a da ...

Question About Male DogsJun 02, 2012

Shaving Dogs And CatsApr 28, 2013
I am an animal lover and am all for making them comfortable in the summer months, but please keep in mind that an animal's coat/fur PROTECTS them from the heat/sun.  By shaving them to the skin, you are just setting them up to get even hotter outdoors and possibly burn their skin. Their coat also protects their internal body from shifts of temperature indoors or out. A pet groomer is NOT going to tell you this--they make a good chunk of money shaving hair off pets.  If you don&# ...
