I underwent an Achilles tendon repair 6 weeks ago, went for one of my postop visits a couple of days ago and about 2 cm of my incision has opened and may be infected. My doctor started me on some major antibiotics, 2000 mg of Keflex a day, and has referred me for wound care treatment, trying to get this healed quickly so I can start physical therapy. I have been on a walker and absolutely no weightbearing on the surgical leg for 6 weeks, so kind of anxious about getting this thing going.
Any way, my question is, do you have any idea what kind of treatments they do? I know that people have been through much worse but I have to tell you, this has been absolute hell and had I known 6 weeks ago what I know now, I would have never gone through with this. My surgeon warned me that this was "one of the most painful surgeries" that anyone can go through and boy, she was not kidding. I am just trying to prepare myself for the possibility of more pain, okay, yeah, I know there will be more pain involved in it because it is an open wound, but trying to work out to what extent, lol.
My advice out there for anyone who has a torn Achilles, just deal with it. Six weeks of no weightbearing does not seem like that big of a deal, or at least it did not to me, but it has been a nightmare. It is an ordeal to get ready to go out, so I don't, unless it is to my doctor's office so depression has kind of kicked in on top of the pain and everything else. I started out in a plaster cast that weighed about 20 pounds (no joke), wore that for a week and then went into fiberglass until this past Monday. The fiberglass was not so bad except we had to work out a way about a shower because you put together a cast and no weightbearing and that was not an easy task, lol.
I have to say though I have been extremely blessed because I have a wonderful husband who took off the first 2 weeks postop to take care of me. He has been absolutely amazing, so patient, has waited on me hand and foot almost the entire time and has never complained.
Sorry, got off of the question at hand about wound care, but wanted to also warn anyone who might be contemplating this surgery.
Thanks so much in advance!!!
